Wayne Coyne and crew drove around Whitechapel, London with a cabbie named Brian who had a minor talent for making animal noises, for the most recent Black Cab Session. It was apparently a cold and miserable afternoon in, but brightened by the Flaming Lips total weirdness.
Coyne leads the cramped show at times like a giddy boy and others like a neurotic director. It's fun just watching him work, slipping into the roles; singer, now director, then maniac. Drummer Kliph Scurlock could not possibly look more stoned, while Steven Drozd wields a guitar from a future that was imagined in 1979.
In related news, Pitchfork confirms that the Flaming Lips will be on a forthcoming Guided by Voices tribute album, most likely covering "Smothered in Hugs" off Bee Thousand. Coyne posted a video close up of his mouth singing it last week. The tribute album will be released by No More...
