The problem with the burgeoning cast of a long-running series is that there's never enough screen time for everybody.
Thankfully, that wasn't the case on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 14 Episode 11, which made for an engaging change of pace.
Kilbride had assigned Sam, Callen, and Deeks to a joint task force, the inside-joke buzzword for the recent NCIS crossover.
The ready solution was to pull in a handful of fan-favorite recurring characters as substitutes on a mission with the regular characters who remained available.
So Lance took over the Sam role of the rugged military man while Sabatino inhabited the Callen role as the wisecracking man of mystery.
What does it say about Deeks that no one was needed to replace him?
That's not totally fair. While Eric Christian Olsen wasn't there, David Paul Olsen, Eric's brother, and Daniela Ruah's husband, returned as Tom Olsen, Sam's old Seal buddy.

Sometimes you have to roll with it.
An unlikely scheme to target Navy SEALs was at the heart of NCIS: Los Angeles Season 11 Episode 8.
And the key piece of this terrorist plot was a diabetic paper pusher getting manipulated by an out-of-work hacker?
Okay. I guess that's remotely feasible.
So let's hold our breath and forge ahead.
When Lt. Paul Tatum, a former nuclear engineer, went missing, that made sense. After all, who knew what secrets were locked in his head?
But no. The villain of the piece, the al Queda sympathizer, wanted Tatum's Va files instead.
Here's where the case fell apart for me, really early in the episode.
This computer genius, who was somehow unemployable, found exactly the right patsy whom he could control and who had access to just the right records that he wanted.
Because, as everyone knows, military employment files are an open book to members of the public.

There was a little something for anyone, but not near enough for everyone.
NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 7 featured a better-than-average case of the week, leavened with a healthy dose of melodrama but not nearly enough humor.
First, a case that both defies logic and yet somehow manages to be topical.
A couple of Nsa spooks used asset-forfeiture laws to siphon off millions from a Mexican drug cartel. And, unbelievably, the cartel's honcho objected to this, and came after his money. (Forget about building the wall. Block off those tunnels instead.) And he didn't hesitate to feed those responsible to the fishes (or sharks, in this case).
Of course, the case also involved the boogeyman of the day. If there's nefarious doings, some radical jihadists must be involved. No, in this case, as Deeks points out, it was a tale as old as time, with cops robbing drug dealers.

Is there a change in the air in sunny SoCal?
Probably not, in the long run. Still it was enjoyable to see people in new roles in NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 3.
First off, there's Kensi in the hospital, comatose from her injuries suffered on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8, Episode 2. Poor Deeks and Julia, Kensi's mother, share bedside vigil for a good portion of the episode.
Kensi's condition is hanging over everyone in the unit.
Callen: Like Deeks said, was it worth it?
Sam: Yes. We all know the risks. This is the path we've chosen.

When it comes to the courtship of NCIS: Los Angeles‘ Kensi and Deeks, nothing has been traditional. So it should come as zero surprise that when Deeks finally pops the question during Season 8, it won’t be your typical proposal.

On Tuesday (Oct. 15), "NCIS: Los Angeles" reached a major milestone: the drama aired its 100th episode.
To celebrate the accomplishment, the "NCIS: Los Angeles" cast visited CBS' "The Talk" to discuss the episode, their first meetings with each other, and more.
"When I first met [co-star Chris O'Donnell] I didn't know what to expect," LL Cool J -- who is pleasantly surprised the show made it to 100 -- says. "Is he going to wear his cape? But we hit it off in the best way possible. He's a family man, he's got a great spirit, great heart, and he's just a good guy."
Daniela Ruah also revealed some exciting baby news. "I'm expecting a little boy," Ruah says, of her pregnancy with co-star Eric Christian Olsen's brother and stunt double, David Olsen.
