Before there were horror movies, there were legends. Passed down through oral tradition, our earliest ancestors created colorful fables of vengeful gods, malevolent witches, and ravenous beasts lurking in the darkest corners of the night. Often told to entertain, these spooky tales also included hidden warnings about the dangers of straying from the path, disobeying one’s parents, or breaking social norms. As the years have passed between then and now, so have the stories. Horrific tales of poisoned apples have become whispered warnings to check Halloween candy for razor blades. Trolls lurking in the woods have transformed into a hook-handed murderer haunting lover’s lane.
Contemporary legends are more likely to be shared in an email forward than around the campfire, but their functions remain the same. These tales exist to help us navigate an unpredictable world and their subjects have evolved alongside our cultural fears. We’ve also updated our methods of delivery,...

"It builds on itself with time to become this. That's a story. That's a life well lived." Filmmaker Irene Taylor crafts a poetic meditation on nature, mortality, and the passage of time in her exploration of our symbiotic nexus with trees.

In the last two years the documentary landscape has shifted from the golden age of docus to the corporate age of docus, making it increasingly difficult for nonfiction filmmakers with projects that aren’t about celebrities or true crimes to find distribution. But HBO Documentary Films is proving that despite being part of a corporate conglomerate, it still wants content that doesn’t necessarily pertain to bold faced names, salacious murders or cults.
Proof is Irene Taylor’s “Trees and Other Entanglements,” a feature doc that uses trees as the main throughline to tell various subject’s personal stories. Ahead of the film’s Dec. 12 world premiere on Max, HBO has released a trailer.
Taylor uses imagery, photography, and animation to introduce a diverse group of individuals entangled with the trees they love. Subjects include Bonsai master Ryan Neil, photographer Beth Moon, forest restorer Dirk Brinkman, recollector Carolyn Finney, and lumber heir George Weyerhaeuser Sr.

The program is one among many currently in the pipeline at ABC News Studios, a new effort by the Disney-backed news organization to centralize its efforts to produce documentary programming aimed at fueling the fortunes of Disney properties.
“We want to leverage our intellectual property that is generated across the news division in service of entertaining narrative storytelling. That is an absolute priority for us,” says Mike Kelley, vice president and head of ABC News Studios, in an interview. “We know that...

On the heels of the Boy Scouts of America’s bankruptcy in 2020, more than 82,000 sexual abuse claimants came forward against the organization before a court-mandated deadline for participation in a 2.7 billion settlement. The case appears to be the impetus for the documentary “Leave No Trace,” premiering at the 2022 Tribeca Festival ahead of its June 16 theatrical release and streaming on Hulu.
Although rampant sex abuse and coverup is the focus, director Irene Taylor (an Oscar nominee for co-directing the doc short “The Final Inch”) spends significant time exploring the Scouts’ American-as-apple-pie brand and the wickedness lurking within its ethos.
The century-old organization has been maintaining files on “ineligible volunteers” since the 1920s; the “red” list, as it was known then, was mistaken as an effort to root out communists rather than child molesters. Citing privacy concerns, the nonprofit has been adamant about keeping the files secret, never voluntarily sharing the info with law enforcement.

Timely topics including abortion, freedom of the press, the opioid crisis and the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy case serve as the subject matters of four documentary features premiering at this year’s Tribeca Festival.
In “Battleground” director Cynthia Lowen follows three women in charge of anti-abortion organizations, who are devoted to overturning Roe v. Wade. While the efforts of pro-choice women determined to safeguard access to safe and legal abortions are also featured in the doc, Lowen felt it necessary to focus on “anti-choice actors.”
“In 2019 I went down to Alabama and originally was filming with several pro-choice advocates in the state about the abortion ban,” Lowen says. “But I quickly realized that to really understand what was happening at the local clinic and state level I needed to take a step back and get this bird’s eye view of the power structures that were in play that...

Women may be the gatekeepers of the documentary arm of the entertainment industry, but this year marks the first time they have helmed the majority of awards season’s high-profile documentaries.
The filmmakers include Irene Taylor Brodsky (“Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements”), Petra Costa (“The Edge of Democracy”), Lauren Greenfield (“The Kingmaker”), Barbara Kopple (“Desert One”), Rachel Lears (“Knock Down the House”), Nancy Schwartzman (“Roll Red Roll”), Nanfu Wang and Lynn Zhang (“One Child Nation”).
In addition, there are also documentary frontrunners co-directed by women, including “Advocate” (Rachel Leah Jones), “After Parkland” (Emily Taguchi), “American Factory” (Julia Reichert), “For Sama” (Waad Al-Khateab), “The Great Hack” (Jehane Noujaim) and “Honeyland” (Tamara Kotevska).
In late October, when the Intl. Documentary Assn. announced the nominees for the 35th annual Ida awards, six of the 10 best doc nods and all of the films nominated in the inaugural director category were directed or co-directed by women.

I think I thought it would be easier than it was,” confesses Irene Taylor Brodsky about her new documentary ‘Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements.” The Emmy-winning filmmaker had already made a Peabody Award-winning film about her deaf parents, 2007’s “Hear and Now.” But her new film tackles not only her parents but also her deaf son, a premise that created unique challenges for Brodksy. As she explains in our exclusive video interview (watch the video above), “This time I’m the daughter of my subjects and also the mother of my subject.”

The specialty box office was fairly quiet this weekend, with a handful of releases and holdovers that were, at best, mild.
Neon and Participant Media‘s Monos hit theaters in New York and Los Angeles on a total of five screens. Directed by Alejandro Landes, the Red Dawn-esque dramatic thriller starring Julianne Nicholson made its debut at Sundance and won the World Cinema Dramatic Jury Prize. With that accolade under its belt, it raked in an estimated $43,285 for its opening weekend, averaging $8,657. In New York, the film opened at the Angelika and Landmark 57, while in L.A., it debuted at the Arclight Hollywood and Landmark. Even so, we hear that of all the theaters, the Angelika brought in a decent audience, while the others didn’t fare very well.

As the Toronto Film Festival comes to a close and Hollywood preps to hand out some Emmys, the Specialty box office continues to churn out some original storytelling — and this week’s theme seems to be the concept of sound.
The Sound of Silence
Distributor: IFC Films
Michael Tyburski makes his feature film debut today with The Sound of Silence, which made its world premiere earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Co-written by Tyburski and Ben Nabors, the film stars Peter Sarsgaard as Peter Lucian, an expert in identifying a symphony of almost undetectable sounds. When he is not collecting sounds, he is a “house tuner” who diagnoses the discordant ambient noises produced by everything from wind patterns to humming electrical appliances that adversely affect his clients’ moods. (Who knew a career like that existed?) When he is hired by a lonely, sleep-deprived woman named Ellen (Rashida Jones...

A lawsuit filed against HBO by a painter who accused the studio of using his artwork without permission will move forward, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
Brooklyn-based artist Joe Coleman claims that his piece, “No One Can Enter the Lord’s House Except as a Child (Slenderman),” was extensively featured in the 2016 documentary “Beware the Slenderman” without his permission. According to recent court filings, Coleman’s art appears for 25 seconds in the film in a close-up shot that pans out to a scene depicting an unidentified user looking at the art on an Internet browser
While HBO filed a motion to dismiss the suit, arguing in part that its depiction of the work was “transformative” enough to justify its reproduction under fair use, the court was not “persuaded” that it was. “[HBO is] not entitled to a finding that
their use of the [painting] is transformative solely because they display the Work in an Internet browser,...

"His deafness gave him the ability to hear his own voice." Abramorama has debuted the first official trailer for a compelling documentary titled in full, Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements, which initially premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year. This acclaimed film is described as a "deeply personal memoir" about a deaf boy growing up, his deaf grandfather growing old, and Beethoven the year he was blindsided by deafness and wrote his iconic sonata. I've heard great things about this and I'm looking forward to the experience. "Buoyed by a perceptive soundscape and luminous animation, Brodsky astutely captures the complexity of silence and hearing... [She] explores the meaning of deafness, loss, and the power of silence as her son discovers his unique voice and her parents confront a new chapter of their lives." Looks like a remarkable doc. The footage in this trailer alone gives me the chills, so deeply moving and inspiring.

After debuting at Sundance and making its way through the festival circuit, HBO Documentary Films’ “Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements” will get a theatrical release in September. The film will start playing in New York Sept. 13 and Los Angeles Sept. 20 through distribution company Abramorama.
“Moonlight Sonata” will also make its broadcast debut on HBO in December 2019.
Directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky (“Beware the Slenderman”), the documentary focuses on Brodsky’s son growing up as his deaf grandfather grows old. Her son was born with the ability to hear but lost it at 4 years old. He gets cochlear implants and starts playing piano, and at 11 years old, he is set on learning Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” — the piece Beethoven wrote as he lost his hearing.

Red Arrow Studios International has secured a raft of deals for feature-length documentary “Slender Man: The Untold Story.” The true-crime documentary, about the case of two girls whose obsession with a fictional internet character was cited for their attempted murder of a friend, was picked up by Nine Network in Australia.
European sales have also been closed with Svt for Sweden, TV2 in Norway, Vtm in Belgium, and Rts for French-speaking Switzerland.
“Slender Man: The Untold Story” debuted in the U.S. on Hubbard Broadcasting’s Reelz network in January under the extended title “Slender Man Stabbing: The Untold Story,” resulting in a 54% increase in the network’s average viewing figures.

Back in 2009, ‘Something Awful’ forum user Eric Knudsen (aka Victor Surge) created a character that would take off in more horrifying ways than could ever be imagined. Initially produced as a Creepypasta Internet meme; the tall, faceless, child consuming, suited, entity has become ingrained in the public consciousness as a modern myth in many ways but with such popularity has come tragedy. Most notably the much-publicised 2014 Waukesha, Wisconsin case, that saw the attempted murder of a young girl by her two friends, who attested they did it for Slender Man. This unsettling reality has resulted in a degree of controversy around the making of this film but the worst thing about Slender Man is not any bad taste behind its existence, rather than its inept attempts at creating something onscreen anywhere near as terrifying as the character himself or the real events surrounding him.

Should short films be able to stand on their own? It’s a question that always comes up when critics debate the merits of short filmmaking and whether its an art form worthy of its own medium or if a short is just a condensed version of a feature film.
Speaking on behalf of the jury at TheWrap’s 2018 ShortList Film Festival, “Blindspotting” star and co-writer Rafael Casal may have finally put that question to rest.
“It’s like asking a writer whether or not a haiku is valid,” Casal told TheWrap’s Sharon Waxman on Thursday at the AMC Century City 15 in Los Angeles. “It has its place, it has its purpose, it has its power. Medium is entirely arbitrary.”

The filmmakers competing in TheWrap’s 2018 ShortList Film Festival had to contend with children, Nazis, drunk college students, financial challenges, peer criticism — and in the case of one of the festival’s winning short films — an adorable goat, in order to get their movies completed.

Now in its seventh year, The ShortList gathers award-winning short films from festivals around the country into one competition. And considering that for many directors, these shorts represent their first films, they’ve already faced immense adversity getting here.

Rudy Valdez’s “The Sentence,” the story of a woman’s “Orange Is the New Black”-esque odyssey through the criminal justice system, was runner up in the documentary field.
“Bathtubs,” directed by Dava Whisenant, tells the story of “Late Show With David Letterman” writer Steve Young whose life is changed when he stumbles into the “hidden world” of corporate musicals, or Broadway-style musical recordings commissioned to burnish corporate images and promote their products.
The short film nod went to “Homeless: The Soundtrack” from Irene Taylor Brodsky.

In late spring 2014, Weier and Geyser, both 12, stabbed their friend Peyton Leutner 19 times and left her for dead. After the two were caught walking down the side of a highway a few hours later, the girls told police they had done it to prove their loyalty to "Slender Man," a mythological bogeyman whose crowd-sourced legend had been making its way around online forums for several years.
