Fill the cannons with stuffed animals and watch the fluff fly as Eli Roth’s Borderlands takes the Lionsgate stage at CinemaCon! The annual entertainment event is in full swing after yesterday’s Warner Bros. panel and reveal of Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer. With film and television fans fired up about upcoming releases, Lionsgate is ready to take them to a wasteland where kooky characters try to kill each other, and a fabled vault of riches awaits.
The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the initial screenplay for Borderlands but removed his name from the project after the script was rewritten by Roth, Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Joe Crombie, Chris Bremner, and Sam Levinson. Zak Olkewicz wrote scenes for Miller during the reshoots. Elements from drafts Aaron Berg and Oren Uziel wrote before Mazin have reportedly made their way into the film as well. So...

Last week, the trailer for director Eli Roth’s long-awaited video game adaptation Borderlands, which is set to reach theatres on August 9th, made its way online – and while talking to Entertainment Weekly about the trailer, Roth revealed that he’s currently writing a horror script with 16-year-old Borderlands cast member Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina in the upcoming movie!
Roth told Entertainment Weekly that Greenblatt “loves horror, and we have a great idea, so we’re writing a movie together. That is an exclusive, nobody knows that. I don’t want to say anything about it yet, but she’s so smart I’m like, ‘Let’s write a movie together, and we’ll produce it together, and I’ll direct it, and you’ll star in it.’” Of course, Roth didn’t give away any details about the story he and Greenblatt are collaborating on. Cate Blanchett is one of our greatest living acting treasures. Truly, what can’t she do? Well, in the new trailer for Borderlands she’s battling space aliens, searching for buried treasure and a missing girl, and getting drenched in the questionable waters of “Piss-Wash Gully.”

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

An adaptation of the popular video game, Eli Roth’s Borderlands is finally set for big screen release this summer, and the official trailer has arrived as promised this morning.
Lionsgate will be releasing Borderlands on August 9, 2024.
Watch the Borderlands movie trailer below!
It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. Gunn is a master of threading story and deep character work into all the action, and this will likely sink or swim based on how well it does the same. For now, it looks and feels like Borderlands. And that’s a good start.
The ensemble cast for the video game movie includes Jack Black as Claptrap, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland,...

Kimberly Akimbo, the 2023 Tony Award winner for best musical, will be closing on April 28.
The musical, which also took home four other Tony Awards, has been running at the Booth Theatre on Broadway since October 2022, after making its world premiere at the Atlantic Theater Company Off-Broadway in 2021. The entire original cast from the Off-Broadway run, including Tony Award winners Victoria Clark and Bonnie Milligan, has remained with the show throughout its run and will remain for the final performance.
A national tour is scheduled to follow starting in September.
The musical, which features a book by David Lindsay-Abaire and a score by Jeanine Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire, follows Kimberly (played by Clarke), a 16-year-old girl with a rare genetic condition that causes her to age rapidly, as she navigates a complicated family life and tries to fit in amongst her peers. Kimberly Akimbo, winner of five 2023 Tony Awards including Best Musical, will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, April 28, producers announced today.
Remarkably for Broadway, the entire original company, which has been performing together since the musical’s Off Broadway world premiere in 2021, has continued, and will continue, with the production through its final performance.
The universally acclaimed musical, which finds humor, heartbreak and hope in the tale of a teenage girl with a rare (and fictional) rapid-aging genetic condition that likely will take her life before she finishes her adolescence, opened on Broadway November 10, 2022, following its world premiere at the Atlantic Theater Company in November 2021.
Upon closing, Kimberly Akimbo will have played 32 previews and 612 performances on Broadway. The musical will kick off a 75-week, 60-city national tour at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts this September. (The touring cast has not been announced.)

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K in June of last year. Seven months later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after seventeen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. Roth’s Thanksgiving slasher is scheduled to reach theatres on November 17, 2023, the Friday before the Thanksgiving holiday. Now Deadline has broken the news that Borderlands will reach theatres about eight months later, on August 2, 2024. So we still have a year to wait before we’ll be able to watch this one.
We had heard that The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the screenplay for Borderlands, but according to Deadline the final script was actually written by Roth and Joe Crombie.

Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

Meet your new favorite musical. When Kimberly Akimbo premiered at the Atlantic Theater Company last December, it was a breath of fresh air, an intimate show about teenage misfits and the unreliable adults in their world that balanced hilarious comedy with aching poignancy and quirks unfailingly grounded in emotional truth. Transferring intact to Broadway, this small-scale charmer has not only retained but enriched its distinctive qualities, sweeping in as a burst of invigorating originality in a sea of repurposed movies, jukebox compilations and revivals.
Ok, so strictly speaking this is not an original work but a reinvention of David Lindsay-Abaire’s 2001 play about a lonely teenager suffering from a rare fast-aging disease like progeria, which makes her age at four and a half times the normal rate. She’s a 16-year-old — the average life expectancy of her disease — with the body of a septuagenarian.

A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)
In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.
This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

“Trial & Error” is officially done.
The true crime spoof had effectively been canceled last year when NBC did not exercise its option to renew the show for a third season. Studio Warner Bros. TV had been trying to find it a new network home, but that search has come up short.
The series took place in the fictional town of East Peck, with each season focusing on a different murder case. John Lithgow starred in Season 1 as a professor accused of killing his wife, while Kristin Chenoweth starred in Season 2 as a socialite accused of killing her husband.
It starred Nicholas D’Agosto as a lawyer who arrives in East Peck to handle his first big case. The series also starred Sherri Shepherd, Steven Boyer, Krysta Rodriguez and Jayma Mays. Jeff Astrof and Matt Miller served as writers and executive producers for “Trial & Error.” Jeffrey Blitz directed and also served as an executive producer.

“Trial and Error” has been canceled after two seasons on NBC, TheWrap has learned.
As TheWrap previously reported, the broadcaster’s option on the true crime spoof lapsed last August and Warner Bros. Television planned to shop the comedy to other outlets. At the time, NBC had not formally passed on renewing the mockumentary series, meaning it was still in play for a third season, but the studio was free to explore other options.
A source tells TheWrap the studio did try to get “Trial and Error” picked up elsewhere, but there is currently no home for the series. However, Warner Bros is still open to an opportunity to continue the show, should it find a new home in the future.

Crime comedy Trial & Error is still without a new home following the cancellation by NBC, and there are no current prospects for a third season. “We are open to an opportunity to continue the series, should one arise in the future,” producing studio Warner Bros. TV said in a statement.
When NBC opted not to pick up a third season last August, the rights reverted back to Wbtv. Since options on the series’ regular cast had not expired yet, Wbtv used the window to shop the show elsewhere, but without success. With approximately 500 scripted series premiering new seasons in 2018, sometimes it feels like the television landscape is like a bubble. If it keeps getting inflated larger and larger, eventually something will have to give and it will pop, right? Well, maybe not for the platforms on which these shows are released — after all, new ones are created there often, as well. However, for the average television viewer — and even members of Variety‘s dedicated, professional staff — the limit has been reached.
Here, Variety staff selects the series they had to leave behind in 2018 — from the longest-running staple of Dick Wolf’s “One Chicago” franchise, to the headline-grabbing “Roseanne,” to Emmy darling “Saturday Night Live.”
