Key Art for Mixtape, streaming on Paramount+, 2023. Paramount+ announced that Mixtape, a new documentary exploring how the creation of mixtapes launched hip hop into mainstream culture, will premiere exclusively on the service Tuesday, August 1 in the U.S. and Canada and Wednesday, August 2 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America and Brazil, with further international markets to follow later in the year. Mixtape is the story of hip hop refusing to take no for an answer. Before radio play, the internet, and social media, there were mixtapes. DJs were tastemakers, trendsetters and creators of the sound that became the biggest musical genre on the planet. The importance of mixtapes goes well beyond the tapes themselves. Mixtapes were a form of currency and a signifier that someone was “in the know” and had their ear to the streets. The culture was too strong to be stopped, and the artists were too...

03 Greedo is back home. After his return from a Texas county jail in January, the L.A. rapper released Halfway There, a 33-track odyssey replete with Greedo’s melodic flourishes. He followed it up by performing at South by Southwest in Austin and, in June, a two-night stint at the Novo in Los Angeles — a venue that marked a kind of homecoming. “The show was turnt up. Both sold out. A lot of rappers popped out for me,” Greedo explains. “The city hasn’t seen that for a while.” While in prison,...

Sunday’s 65th Grammy Awards averaged 12.4 million total viewers across numerous platforms, including CBS and Paramount+, up about 30 percent from the prior year’s special and the most since 2020. That tally include out-of-home viewing.
Thank the (super-)star-studded guest list, including winners Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, and Beyoncé, for the bump.
The 2022 Grammys drew an initial 8.9 million viewers, per Nielsen, which placed the show just ahead of the record low reached in 2021. That year-ago show would adjust up to 9.6 million total viewers when including those who watched from outside of their own homes. The Covid-impacted March 14, 2021 Grammy Awards settled for just 8.8 million initial viewers, and would adjust up to 9.4 million.
The Covid Grammys, for lack of a better shorthand term, plummeted 53 percent from the January 26, 2020 special, which nabbed 18.8 million viewers. Trevor Noah hosted all three of the shows; for the first two, he was the face of Comedy Central’s...

New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli‘s new book, Rap Capital: An Atlanta Story, is a thorough account of the rise of Atlanta hip-hop as a business and a culture. Through vignettes with the city’s eclectic cast of characters — rappers and businesspeople alike — Coscarelli paints a vivid portrait of the city’s unique wealth of talent. The book’s concern with 2013 until 2020 lands right as the forces of racism and capitalism, a constant source of tension within hip-hop, confronted the dawn of the streaming era. For over 15 years – and longer, if you count his early days as a Miami radio and club DJ – he has positioned himself as the id of rap’s mainstream, a meme-able interlocutor of the form’s pop ambitions. It’s a role that hearkens back to the days of pioneering New York radio jocks like Frankie Crocker and Mr. Magic. But DJ Khaled has...

This is the first in a Rolling Stone series exploring the new business models of music’s rap- and streaming-dominated era.
Record deals rarely let slip concrete numbers, but the rough figures reported around the most buzzed-about deals of the last year go something like this: Warner dishing out $8 million to teenage rapper Lil Pump, who’s only had one major hit on the charts so far; RCA handing over an immense $15 million to Brockhampton; Juice Wrld, SahBabil, Shoreline Mafia and Lil Xan jumping out of obscurity to the tune of $1 million or more; XXXTentacion,...

Drake — you don’t want to be in another feud, especially with Future, your friend that you invited to tour with you. Admit it — Future wasn’t directly saying anything rude about you. He was just expressing his opinion about both of your albums. Here’s why you should forgive Future, since he apologized to you!
Drake, you and Future go way back. You’ve done collaborations together before, and you even invited him to tour with you. Don’t let a few quotes about his taste in music ruin a friendship and create a huge, bitter feud! When Future gave Billboard off the record quotes, an error in translation was bound to be made — that Future even admitted to! Plus, if Future files a lawsuit over lost wages due to being cut from the tour, the drama between you two could go on for years!

This is f*cking awesome! The Seattle indie-rapper duo Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) and Ryan Lewis have headed west and south in their latest video that takes old school love to the white walls. The new video for “White Walls,” the Cadillac-loving Heist track featuring ScHoolboy Q and Hollis is dope baby, and Cadillac owes Macklemore Fruit of the Month club as gift at the very least. The clip stars A$AP Rocky, Trinidad James, Wiz Khalifa, Big Boi, DJ Drama, and Sir Mix-a-Lot, but also a matador-costumed Macklemore going under the handle ‘Mackle Jackson.’ #Loveit Geezers and old white 'hos get some love too:...

Sorry Weezy fans! The iconic rapper was expected to drop his latest much-anticipated mixtape on Aug. 30, only to hold off to add more songs and ‘finishing touches’ to it. So when can we expect ‘D5′?
Lil Wayne does things at his own speed – Tha Carter IV for example, was released almost four months after its original release date — so fans had a right to be suspicious that his latest mixtape, Dedication 5, would actually drop on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m. Et as scheduled. And their suspicions were confirmed!
Lil Wayne Delays ‘Dedication 5′ Release
An hour before the tape was set to come out, Wayne’s collaborator Mack Maine tweeted that there would be a delay: “Delayed for a few hours not days and weeks,” he said.
Lil Wayne’s camp then released an official statement, explaining why the release got pushed back. Apparently, Weezy decided last-minute that D5 was not as...

What? How?! Why??? We're rarely speechless, so mark this moment down in the fashion history books. In the most inexplicable fashion news off the very busy Bet red carpet, DJ Drama, Brandon T. Jackson and J. Cole all wore the same Versace top. And, not to state the obvious, it's a gold and black baroque pattern, long-sleeved sweater. Let's put aside the fact that a DJ, a hip hop artist and a Jackson all thought it was a good idea to wear a heavy wool in a L.A. heat wave. We're also willing to forget the fact that all three of them are wearing it with a gold chain necklace (the '90s are over fellas), black, fitted jeans and black shoes (arguably the only good part of the...

Hip-hop is a natural minefield for satire, a world in which oversize personalities talk large and create brands and fronts that rest on the fragile backs of 16-bar verses. Behind most clever or boastful lyrics is a grown man counting out syllables and scribbling down lines into a notebook. In recent years, though, few have spotlighted the comedy that unfolds between the seeds of a song and a rapper stepping on stage better than a gangly pair of brothers who live on the Upper West Side of New York.
Jeff and Eric Rosenthal are known as ItsTheReal, a comedy duo that documents hip-hop culture through self-directed videos in which they interview rappers or skewer their work in skits. (Jeff also writes about the genre; Rolling Stone sent him on the ill-fated Rihanna Plane, where he shared a row with this editor.)
