After pulling double duty in 2010 with Tron: Legacy and True Grit, it's been a rough few years for Jeff Bridges with duds like R.I.P.D., The Giver and The Seventh Son. But maybe he can turn it around with his new project, an adaptation of Claire Messud's novel The Emperor's Children that will be directed by actress Lake Bell for her sophomore directing effort following In a World a few years ago. The film hails from Imagine Entertainment with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard producing from a script by Noah Baumbach. THR reports Bridges will play legendary journalist and liberal opinion-maker Murray Thwaite. The story follows three entitled but unsuccessful characters, Marina Thwaite, Danielle Minkoff and Julian Clarke, who were buddies at Brown and now orbit the life of the aforementioned famous journalist in the months before and after the events of 9/11. With his recent cinematic outings either high-concept or young adult fare like Ripd, The Giver and Seventh Son, Crazy Heart is starting to seem like a long time ago in the Jeff Bridges canon. But he's returning to some heavier drama for the upcoming The Emperor's Children, an adaptation Claire Messud's novel that Lake Bell will direct. The story revolves around three entitled New York thirtysomethings, Daniele, Maria and Julius, plus the outsider Bootie, Maria's cousin, who never quite manages to find room in the tight-knit trinity. Bridges will play Murray Thwaite, a famous journalist whose story also becomes entangled with that of the younger clique, in the days preceding and following 9/11.This is actress Bell's second feature as director, following 2013's In A World. Nobody but Bridges has been cast in The Emperor's Children so far, but given that she starred in her directorial debut (as well as...

If you haven't taken the time to seek out the impressive indie comedy In a World, directed by and starring "Children's Hospital" regular Lake Bell, then you should try to rectify that as soon as you can. In the meantime, THR reports Bell has lined up her sophomore directing effort in the form of an adaptation of Claire Messud's 2007 novel The Emperor's Children. Imagine Entertainment is producing the film with a script coming from Noah Baumbach, writer/director of Frances Ha and Greenberg, who was previously attached to direct the story of the lives of three friends near their thirties, barely making their way in NYC. More specifically, the book follows three entitled but unsuccessful characters who orbit the life of a famous journalist in the months before and after the events of 9/11, that is until two new people enter their social group and threaten to throw everything into upheaval.

Following the well-deserved critical and financial success of her feature-length directorial debut In A World…, it seems that multi-hyphenate Lake Bell has joined the ranks of in-demand directors. She will next step behind the camera for The Emperor’s Children – an adaptation of the 2006 novel of the same name, by American author Claire Messud.
The book, which was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2006, follows three privileged and educated friends living in Manhattan in the months before the devastating terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Despite their advantageous positions, each of them struggles to achieve in the face of the excessive expectations placed upon them. The book is being adapted for the screen by Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha) and, though Baumbach was once rumoured to be taking the director’s chair as well, that seat will now be filled by Bell.

Writer-actress-helmer Lake Bell is getting back into the director's chair. We need as many talented women directors as possible. So this is welcome news. Her follow-up to her debut "In a World" is "The "Emperor's Children," adapted by Noah Baumbach from Claire Messud's novel set around 9/11 among New York's young Liberal intelligentsia. Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Erica Huggins are producing; Baumbach was at one point going to direct. "In a World" won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival. This is dream team stuff, people. The Wrap reports that actress/writer/director Lake Bell has been tapped to direct the big screen adaptation of Claire Messud‘s Man Booker Prize listed bestselling novel “The Emperor’s Children.” Bell will direct from Noah Baumbach‘s script, which has basically just been sitting around for whole years waiting for someone to make it into a real movie. Set in New York City just before and after 9/11, the novel centers on a trio of Brown University pals (who maybe don’t like each other as much as they should) who are just trying to make their way (often, their very misguided way) around life in the big city. The events of 9/11 change that, of course, and the novel is an unsentimental look at how we experience tragedy, especially the wide-ranging and extremely unexpected kind (as the pages tick by and the days move forward and the inevitability of what...

Lake Bell broke out in a big way last year with her directorial debut “In A World…” in which she dealt with Hollywood sexism via the very small world of voiceover artists. It was very funny and we were big fans, calling it “a low key charmer” in our review. Now, Bell has chosen a followup that involves some serious pedigree. THR reports the actor-turned-director will direct an adaptation of Claire Messud’s “The Emperor’s Children.” If Messud’s novel, which focuses on “three entitled but unsuccessful late twentysomethings who orbit the life of a famous journalist in the months before and after the events of 9/11,” sounds familiar, it’s because Noah Baumbach had penned a draft and was planning on directing an adaptation in the summer of 2010 with Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere attached to star. Unfortunately, financing didn't come through and in 2011, “Crazy Heart” director Scott Cooper jumped.

She’s now on board to make the adaptation of Claire Messud’s novel The Emperor’s Children for Imagine.Messud’s book, unusually for a title in development, hit shelves way back in 2007. The story follows three Brown College graduates in their late 20s looking ahead to their lives with no little trepidation. The story takes place a few months before and then a few months after 9/11 in New York.Noah Baumbach was attached back in 2010, wrote a script and was in the process of looking for a cast, with Keira Knightley, Richard Gere and Eric Bana all mooted. Bell may give the screenplay her own spin, or she may decide to direct it as is, but it remains to be seen if she’ll push it closer to the screen than Baumbach managed.

“There has been some discussion lately of the likeability of female characters,” said editor Anna DeVries in the thick of yesterday afternoon’s “Buzz Panel” at Book Expo America, the book industry’s annual convention. Taking place a day before the Jacob Javits Center floor opens to authors, publishing-house reps, and bookstore owners from across the country, Bea’s Buzz Panel features six selected editors who each flog their most promising product. While it’s typically the fair’s best-attended panel, I’ve previously found it to be a hodgepodge affair, spanning fiction and non-, great and derivative. This year was different: overwhelmingly female (five of the six writers, all six editors), unrelentingly bleak (genocide, strokes, Calvino-esque alienation), and consistently enthralling. But first, about likeability: It was recently invoked by the novelist Claire Messud — who took offense when an interviewer said that she “wouldn’t want to be friends” with...

“Don’t make me hit you, sir,” Claire Messud says, as a jaywalker crosses in front of her 10-year-old Passat. Driving to her house not far from Harvard Square, the novelist is narrating an impromptu tour of mansion-lined Brattle Street, academia’s answer to Mulholland Drive. “I think I’m right that that street is where Yo-Yo Ma lives,” she says, tapping her window. “And Stephen Greenblatt lives along here. And Marjorie Garber. I actually haven’t read her work,” she whispers, as if the literary theorist might overhear her. “I know her by reputation only.”In the seven years since Messud, now 46, published her fourth book and first best seller, The Emperor’s Children, her hair has gone … not gray, exactly. More like pewter, which matches a silver pendant and silver-striped shirt. A compelling and well-mannered guide, she seems perfectly at home in this affluent town, but she isn’t—not quite.

Things are looking pretty good for director Scott Cooper. Known for his 2009 Oscar-winning Crazy Heart, which he wrote and directed, Cooper is teaming up with Fox Searchlight once again. This time it’s for an adaptation of Mark Seal’s nonfiction novel, The Man in the Rockefeller Suit. Donald de Line will produce the picture, through his De Line Pictures. [Deadline]
As of right now, Cooper is set to direct and possibly write the script. Just last week Cooper replaced Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) as director for the project.

"Crazy Heart" writer-director Scott Cooper is set to replace "The Squid and the Whale" writer-director Noah Baumbach at the helm of the film adaptation of Claire Messud's novel "The Emperor's Children" for Imagine Entertainment reports Twitchfilm.
The story focuses on three Brown graduates in their late 20's struggling to make something of themselves in New York's Upper West Side in the months before and after 9/11. These include an 'it girl' finishing her first book, a quiet but pretty television producer and a struggling freelance critic.
Baumbach scripted the adaptation. His departure is likely due to a scheduling conflict with two other projects in the works next year. Cooper's involvement raises questions as to the fate of Relativity's "Out Of The Furnace" to which he was attached.

The film adaptation of Claire Messud’s gorgeous novel The Emperor’s Children has faced an unfairly bumpy trip to the screen. Back in 2009, Ron Howard was slated to direct the film from a script by Noah Baumbach. Then the project seemingly fell dead, with no news until March of 2010, when Howard left the project entirely, leaving both writing and directing duties to Baumbach. At that time, a list of attached cast members was announced (including Keira Knightley, Eric Bana, and Richard Gere, with buzz about some other names like Michelle Williams). Production was supposed to start last summer, but of course, it didn’t, and know Baumbach appears to be back out of the director’s chair, with Crazy Heart helmer Scott Cooper stepping in to direct from Baumbach’s script (according to an insider report from Twitch). Cooper burst on to the scene with his Jeff Bridges-starring Crazy Heart back in 2009, a directorial debut...

Everett Collection Peter Carey
At the New York Public Library last night, as part of the “Live From the Nypl” series, Peter Carey, the Australian novelist, was invited for a talk that turned into a memorial for literate culture. “We have forgotten how to read,” said Carey, author of the novels “Oscar and Lucinda” and “Illywhacker” and two-time Booker Prize winner. “I was thinking recently how extraordinary it is that we really do accept that the population generally is not going to read great literature.”
Carey was being interviewed by fellow writers Edmund White and Claire Messud about his latest novel, “Parrot and Olivier in America” (Knopf), a loose fictionalization of the life of Alexis de Tocqueville. Picking up on Carey’s comments, White said, “I lived in France for 16 years, and I always say France has many great readers and not too many great writers at this moment. And...

Michelle Williams is pursuing one of the three lead roles in the long-gestating film adaptation of Claire Messud's "The Emperor's Children" says The Wrap.
The story focuses on three Brown graduates in their late 20's struggling to make something of themselves in the Upper West Side in the months before and after 9/11.
Williams would likely pursue the role of Midwestern television documentary producer Danielle Minkoff, though reps would not confirm.
The film originally was to be directed by Ron Howard several years ago. He's now serving as producer with Noah Baumbach ("The Squid and the Whale") stepping up to serve as writer and director.
Keira Knightley, Eric Bana, and Richard Gere all recently signed onto the project.

In this bit of casting news, one actress has been turning in stellar work, and another who is still looking to prove her talent, are looking to land lead roles in two different projects. First, The Wrap reports Michelle Williams (Shutter Island) is looking to land one of three lead roles in The Emperor's Children which recently hired Noah Baumbach to sit in the director's chair instead of a once attached Ron Howard. Keira Knightley and Eric Bana are already cast in the adaptation of Claire Messud's 2006 novel, and Williams would likely be playing the character of Danielle Minkoff, a TV documentary producer from the Midwest. If you don't recall, the story follows three Brown University graduates in NYC in the months leading up to and following 9/11 who are approaching their 30s as they struggle to realize the lofty expectations held for their personal and professional lives. Knightely ...

After swimming through Hollywood for over three years, the adaptation of Claire Messud's The Emperor's Children is finally gaining steam. Back then, the film was going to be helmed by Ron Howard, but as time moved on, Howard backed into the producer role and left the directorial seat open for the film's screenwriter, Noah Baumbach. Last month, Keira Knightley, Eric Bana, and Richard Gere signed onto the film, and now The Wrap reports that Michelle Williams is interested in one of the three leads.
Messud's bestseller focuses on three Brown graduates in their late twenties struggling to make something of themselves in the Upper West Side -- in the months before and after 9/11. Should Williams sign on, The Wrap thinks she'll be playing Danielle Minkoff, a television documentary producer hailing from the Midwest, although reps wouldn't confirm the guess.
What is certainly more interesting than the casting is the timing.

No one tells the tales of the well-educated and privileged like Noah Baumbach. When he was picked as the director for the adaptation of Claire Messud’s The Emperor’s Children, it seemed like an obvious–if not perfect– choice. So far Keira Knightley, Richard Gere and Eric Bana have joined the cast, and now The Wrap reports that Michelle Williams is in talks for the role of Danielle Minkoff, a TV documentary producer from the Midwest.

When the news broke a few weeks ago that Noah Baumbach would be handling the screen adaptation of Claire Messud's novel The Emperor's Children, I was excited but cautious-- I hated Baumbach's new film Greenberg, but had to admit his knowledge of the New York intellectual elite and skill with handling difficult characters made him pretty perfect job. Plus, he brought on Keira Knightley, Richard Gere and Eric Bana for three major roles, each of them totally perfect for the roles they'll presumably play. And now that The Wrap is reporting that Baumbach has met with Michelle Williams to take another lead role, I think I might be sold. Baumbach is assembling pretty close to the perfect cast for this thing. There are three more significant roles left to be cast, two of them particularly difficult given the usual demographic of Hollywood actors (i.e. white and attractive), plus...

From the angry Fahrenheit 9/11 to the depressing Hamburg Cell, films about September 11 have journeyed through the five stages of grief. Now with weepies Dear John and Remember Me, the movies have come to terms with the defining event of our age
Everything is peachy at the beginning of Dear John, Lasse Hallstrom's new weepie about a soldier's star-crossed romance with a college student. That's because it's spring 2001, a time when the idea of hijacked planes slamming into the twin towers was as far-fetched as a black president or airport body scans. Midway through the film, of course, the planes finally hit, forcing Channing Tatum to leave Amanda Seyfried and do his bit for God and country. That's right, people. In just nine years, the defining event of our age has become the reason why the guy from Step Up can't be with the girl from Mamma Mia!

Noah Baumbach's new film, Greenberg, is better than his last, Margot at the Wedding, but it still doesn't quite hit the high notes of The Squid and the Whale. He's now taking a stab at someone else's material, so we'll see what he can do with that.
The Wrap reports that Baumbach will direct the adaptation of The Emperor's Children, a 2006 novel by Claire Messud. And he walks into a pretty good situation with a cast already in place: Richard Gere, Eric Bana, and Keira Knightley.

Noah Baumbach has signed on to direct The Emperor’s Children for Imagine Entertainment, and looks like he already picked up a well-known names to be in this project’s team: Richard Gere, Eric Bana and Keira Knightley!
So let the adventures of three friends in New York City begin!
So, Baumbach wrote the script for The Emperor’s Children based on Claire Messud’s 2006 best-selling novel of the same name.
It’s been already named as a story “of fate and fortune, of innocence and experience, seduction and self-invention; of ambition, including literary ambition; of glamour, disaster, and promise.”
Actually, as we mentioned, it is a story about three friends and their lives in NYC, so we have Marina Thwaite, the daughter of Murray Thwaite, celebrated intellectual and journalist, finishig her first book, and her two closest friends – Danielle a quietly appealing television producer, and Julius, a cash-strapped freelance critic.

Gere and Knightley look likely to play father and daughter in a film of Claire Messud's bestseller about three New Yorkers in the runup to and aftermath of 9/11
First she starred in Atonement, directed by Joe Wright from Ian McEwan's novel of the same name. Later this year she'll be seen in Never Let Me Go, a film version of Kazuo Ishiguro's moving novel. Now Keira Knightley looks set to complete a hat-trick of big screen adaptations of Booker-nominated novels.
The Wrap reports that Knightley is attached to the project, as is Gere and Eric Bana. Noah Baumbach has already signed on to direct, following the critical success of his latest film Greenberg. Baumbach has a background in the familial dramas of middle-class New Yorkers, having written and directed The Squid and the Whale, and Margot at the Wedding. Remember almost three years ago when we learned that Noah Baumbach (of The Squid and the Whale, Greenberg) had written an adaptation of Claire Messud's 2006 novel titled The Emperor's Children to be directed by Ron Howard. No? Well, you do now. But lots changes in three years and The Wrap's update is evidence of that as they've discovered Baumbach is now stepping up to direct this with Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere. Howard will still stay on with Brian Grazer as a producer, but he's officially decided to direct the infidelity comedy Your Cheating Heart with Vince Vaughn and Kevin James instead. The story follows three Brown University graduates in New York in the months leading up to and following 9/11 who are approaching their 30s with trepidation as they struggle to realize the lofty expectations held for their personal and professional lives. Noah Baumbach's latest film Greenberg is opening to fairly strong reception, and while there's that word that he's helping rewrite the heist film Tower Heist for Brett Ratner, I figured that it might be a moment before we heard anything for certain about Baumbach's next directorial project. But Baumbach is already signing to direct The Emperor's Children, for producer Brian Grazer. Ron Howard was previously attached to direct from a script by Baumbach, but he's handed over the reigns. The Wrap has notes on the deal, saying that Eric Bana, Keira Knightley and Richard Gere are all attached to star. Howard will still produce with Grazer. (This isn't to be confused with the Vince Vaughn / Kevin James dramedy that we've recently reported Howard will direct. That should still be his next feature.) Baumbach wrote the script for The Emperor's Children based on Claire Messud's 2006 novel of the same name.

Alas, not Bryce Dallas or the others you'd hoped. Baumbach is reportedly attached to direct The Emperor's Children, previously assigned to Howard as early as 2007. Baumbach had adapted the screenplay from Claire Messud's novel about a trio of 20-somethings battling post-college doldrums in the months approaching and following 9/11. Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere are also new additions to the project, which has a summer shooting date in mind. Listen hard and you'll hear the knife-sharpening in Armond White's study already. [The Wrap]...

When Noah Baumbach signed on in 2007 to write an adaptation of the novel Emperor's Children for Ron Howard to direct, he was an obvious perfect choice-- Baumbach has defined his career by writing and directing films about exactly the kind of privileged, deeply troubled New Yorkers who populate Claire Messud's novel, and he seemed likely to avoid the softening and brightening that usually happens with Hollywood adaptations of popular books. Now it seems that Baumbach is so perfect he's gotten a promotion. The Wrap reports not only that Baumbach will take over for Howard in the director's chair, but he's got Keira Knightley, Eric Bana and Richard Gere attached to star. Set in the summer before 9/11 (much like the recent Remember Me, though please let that be all these movies have in common), The Emperor's Children follows three Ivy League graduates on the cusp of turning 30, each of them...

Acclaimed art house filmmaker Noah Baumbach ("Greenberg," "The Squid and the Whale") will replace Ron Howard at the helm of "The Emperor's Children" for Imagine Entertainment says The Wrap.
Baumbach adapted the script from Claire Messud's 2006 best-selling novel. The story is set in 2001 and follows three East Coast Ivy League grads approaching their thirties with trepidation. Soon an idealistic college dropout makes some decisions that will change the lives of the trio forever.
Eric Bana, Richard Gere and Keira Knightley are attached to star. Though Howard won't direct he remains attached as producer alongside his regular partner Brian Grazer. Filming kicks off this summer.
