Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Skonieczny is set to go into production on the feature film “Wrooklyn Zoo.”
“Wrooklyn Zoo” is a modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet” in which Romeo, a skilled skateboarder, finds himself captivated by Julia, a Romani girl seeking to emancipate herself from her environment. Their love becomes a powerful force that transcends cultural and societal barriers, leading them on a journey of self-discovery and resilience.
Skonieczny is known for directing the critically acclaimed HBO drama series “Blinded by the Lights,” which launched on HBO Europe in 2018, becoming the platform’s third most watched show in the region. The show debuted in the U.S. in 2019 — a rarity at the time for European HBO programming.
The film’s ensemble cast combines recognized Polish actors, Romani performers and professional skateboarders.
The pic is produced by Olga Bibik and Krzysztof Skonieczny of glebokiOFF, together with Alicja Grawon-Jaksik as the associate producer.

Slow Cinema Meets Rap Music in Krzysztof Skonieczny’s Brutally Compelling Tektonika Project ‘Peru48’
War, destruction and the terrifying threat of annihilation is on half of Eastern Europe’s mind right now, with Russian barbarity in Ukraine threatening to spill over its borders. It’s a very interesting subject for a rap video to tackle and one which Director Krzysztof Skonieczny (under his alias Tektonika alongside contributions from Jerzyk Krzyżyk and Alick) does so with aplomb, using an unorthodox slow cinema approach that feels more indebted to the classical cinema of Béla Tarr, Andrei Tarkovsky and Aleksei German Sr than contemporary rap music videos. Set in a crumbling building on the verge of a hostile takeover, Peru48 uses epic Steadicam takes to create an overburdening and oppressive atmosphere, resulting in a moody depiction of a world about to crumble completely. We asked Skonieczny to tell Dn about being inspired by slow cinema legends and the architecture of Moscow, the challenges involved in getting the long takes right,...

Back in March I had a chance to talk with Krzysztof Skonieczny about his experimental, thrilling debut Hardkor Disko. I did not know a lot about him back then besides the fact that he's always busy; working on sets, shooting music videos, giving workshops and writing. I was even a bit afraid that to some extent he might be like Marcin (Marcin Kowalczyk) - the protagonist his film - who does not speak a lot, does not raise questions, and just prefers to do things quietly his own way. But Skonieczny turned out to be a talkative and open-minded person who cherishes a real dialogue. On the other hand he is indeed a truly independent artist who knows what he wants and what to do...

Hardkor Disko
Written by Krzysztof Skonieczny and Robert Bolesto
Directed by Krzysztof Skonieczny
Poland, 2013
‘Be intense or be nothing’. This statement, made by a middle-aged architect during a civilised breakfast, is put forward as a motto for his daughter’s disaffected generation. Lacking in attention and purpose, they need ‘stimulus after stimulus’ to stay interested, to keep them feeling alive. The phrase also becomes something like a raison d’être for Hardkor Disko, a film that hinges on its discomforting atmosphere and ability to aggravate the senses.
It opens with Marcin (Marcin Kowalczyk), a sullen, misanthropic figure, playing with a large knife in an abandoned theme park. At one point he leaves it hovering right between his eyes; you get the impression he could just let it drop there and then. Instead, he makes for Warsaw and goes directly to an expensive apartment, in search of the couple who live there.

Leading Russian actor-director-producer Fyodor Bondarchuk has indicated that he is prepared to bleep out the obscenities in Valeria Gai Germanika’s new film Yes And Yes (Da I Da) to ensure its Russian theatrical release.
Speaking at a press conference at the Moscow International Film Festival (Miff) this morning (June 25) ahead of the European premiere of Yes And Yes in the Main Competition, Bondarchuk said that he ¨hoped¨ to get a distribution certificate for the film tomorrow.
“I don’t know about the cursing, but we have agreed to put in bleeps if there is no other way [for the film to be released] if the new obscenity law applies to this film,” said Bondarchuk.
“We are still waiting for clarification about the situation for films made before when the law comes into effect on July 1. I will know more on Thursday.”

Transition to adulthood is never an easy task and the heroes of an upcoming Polish film Hardkor Disko (Hardcore Disco) are about to learn it the hard way. Krzysztof Skonieczny (famous music video director) is going to explore the darkest and the most depressing side of that difficult change in his feature debut. Hardkor Disko is a completely independent film about the struggles of the youth in an environment that's totally hostile and unpredictable. First trailer offers some great visuals, penetrating music, nudity, violence, all accompanied by a sombre atmosphere and a creepy monologue that begins with the words: If you had a choice, would you prefer to burn or freeze to death? The official synopsis hints at a lot of contrasting emotions: Hardkor Disko is a story about...

The Myth Of The American Sleepover (15)
(David Robert Mitchell, 2010, Us) Claire Sloma, Amanda Bauer, Marlon Morton, Matt Jacobsen. 96 mins
As low-key as it is low-budget, this is a thing of beauty. The plot is basically Dazed And Confused relocated to Michigan: high-schoolers (including a flirt with the hots for a pool-cleaner and a drop-out pining for the girl of his dreams) make the most of one last hurrah. But the film's mood is all its own, characterised by an elegiac score, easygoing performances and gorgeous cinematography.
Berberian Sound Studio (15)
(Peter Strickland, 2012, UK) Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Cosimo Fusco. 92 mins
There's something nasty in the recording studio. A sound engineer supplies the effects for an Italian horror movie, but the creepiness doesn't stay confined to the screen for long.

Chicago – There were countless foreign films in 2011 more deserving of an Oscar nod than Agnieszka Holland’s “In Darkness.” The film lacks the brutal edge, gut-wrenching tension and memorable characterizations that distinguished so many similar Holocaust-era dramas. Yet the lukewarm “been there, done that” reaction of many American critics has left me rather mystified.
This isn’t a great film, per se, but it is still a harrowing and compelling portrait of resilience in the face of evil. Best known for her fact-based exploration of Hitler youth, “Europa, Europa,” Holland is skilled at creating the sort of vividly atmospheric environment that seeps into a viewer’s bones. One of my favorite films as a child was Holland’s sublime 1993 adaptation of “The Secret Garden,” which viewed the gothic interiors and lush mazes through the eyes of bewitched children.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
