Titan Comics’ new comic book title “Gun Honey: Collision Course” #1, is available May 15, 2024, written by Charles Ardai and illustrated by Ang Hor Kheng:
“…after nearly a year in hiding from government agents looking to kill her, ‘Joanna Tan’ launches a plan to turn the tables…
“…that will take her from the jungles of Borneo, to the streets of Yokohama, and the sands of the Gobi Desert.
“But when four armed groups converge on one secret location, can anyone survive the explosive collision…?”

Welcome to the latest installment of our 100 Word Hits column, in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us short, sharp reviews of the latest books to hit comic stores over the past month or so!
Han Solo & Chewbacca #5 Written by Marc Guggenheim | Art by David Messina
Finding themselves at the mercy of Black Krrsantan, Han and Chewie are sort of ‘rescued’ by Khel Tanna and her gang who are also after the urn and are press ganged into working for her. Greedo also makes a welcome return for some great banter with Solo as does Benelex Marshal Vancto
There’s lots of action, double-crossing, a daring rescue attempt on the con-man masquerading as Solo’s father and a cliff-hanger of an ending (no spoilers here!) It’s a hugely entertaining read but my only gripe is that David Messina’s art looks a...

Bestselling author Stephen King gingerly stepped up to the witness stand Tuesday in a federal antitrust trial. Tracing his own history, he laid out a portrait of a publishing industry that has become increasingly concentrated over the years, while richly rewarding his creative endeavors.
“My name is Stephen King. I’m a freelance writer,” King said as he began his testimony as a witness for the U.S. Justice Department. The government is bidding to convince a federal judge that the proposed merger of Penguin Random House and rival Simon & Schuster, two of the world’s biggest publishers, would thwart competition and damage the careers of some of the most popular authors.
King has been published for years by Simon & Schuster. Some of his former publishers were acquired by larger ones. The 2.2 billion merger of Penguin Random House, the biggest U.S.

As the Justice Department bids to convince a federal judge that the proposed merger of Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster would damage the careers of some of the most popular authors, it is leaning in part on the testimony of a writer who has thrived like few others: Stephen King.
The author of Carrie, The Shining and many other favorites, King has willingly — even eagerly — placed himself in opposition to Simon & Schuster, his longtime publisher. He was not chosen by the government just for his fame, but for his public criticism of the 2.2 billion deal announced in late 2021, joining two of the world’s biggest publishers into what rival CEO Michael Pietsch of Hachette Book Group has called a “gigantically prominent” entity.
“The more the publishers consolidate, the harder it is for indie publishers to survive,” King tweeted last year.

Hard Case Crime previously published two of my favorite Stephen King novels—The Colorado Kid and Joyland—so I'm thrilled that they've teamed up with King once again to publish his new book, Later. With the supernatural noir now available in paperback, audio, and digital (ahead of its limited edition hardcover release on March 30th), we've been provided with an excerpt to share with Daily Dead readers!

Press Release: Hard Case Crime, the award-winning line of pulp-styled crime novels published by Titan Books, will publish Later, a brand-new novel by Stephen King, on March 2, 2021.
Later tells the story of Jamie Conklin, a boy whose unusual abilities could aid his single mom and her police detective lover – but only at a terrible cost.

This November, acclaimed comic writer/novelist Max Allan Collins’ smash hit Quarry series makes the leap to comics for the first time ever – from Titan Comics and Hard Case Crime – in an all-new series titled Quarry’s War.
Titan Comics’ new Quarry series marks the first time that the franchise explores the comic book medium. The comic follows the lead character from the critically acclaimed Cinemax TV show, which The Washington Post said had “a heart-breaking sense of soul.” Penned by Collins, whose other work includes Batman, Dick Tracy, Ms. Tree, and the groundbreaking graphic novel Road to Perdition, which inspired the Academy Award-winning film starring Tom Hanks and Paul Newman, Quarry’s War is illustrated by artist Szymon Kudranski (Batman: Streets of Gotham, Spider-Man, Spawn).

I’m a sucker for crime fiction, whether it’s served up by Raymond Chandler or by Harlan Coben. As a kid, my passion for adventure stories started it all. But like a Chevy Impala on a rain-soaked highway, my interest slid all over the road. I’d devour mysteries, detective novels, pulps and crime thrillers.
In the world of comics, lately we’ve been treated to outstanding fantastic crime thrillers. Ed Brubaker leads the way, of course, with his various crime noir and spy series. Greg Rucka’s stuff is always fun and I hope Oni publishes more Stumptown soon. And other publishers, like Dynamite, Idw, and Boom! Studios have been providing strong contributions as well.

Stephen King is a pretty busy guy lately. He recently produced the currently-airing adaptation of his loopy time-travel story 11.22.63 over on Hulu, while simultaneously helping to guide the long-awaited big screen adaptation of The Dark Tower into theaters (tentatively coming in January of 2017). There’s even that Revival movie coming down the line. On top of all that, it’s easy to forget that Cell — one of his more modern stories — is on the release slate for later this year.
Today, new images from the movie were shared online, focusing on the post-apocalyptic struggles of its lead character Clay Riddell (John Cusack) as he bands together with Tom McCourt (Samuel L. Jackson), Alice Maxwell (Isabelle Fuhrman), and Charles Ardai (Stacy Keach) as they all fight for survival against a zombie uprising. The film’s plot reads satisfyingly close to the source material, from Clay’s desperate search for his family...

There are few more evocative first lines in 20th-century American literature than that of James M. Cain's 1934 novel, The Postman Always Rings Twice. "They threw me off the hay truck about noon," begins the book's narrator, an amoral drifter named Frank Chambers. He soon finds himself near a roadside sandwich joint called the Twin Oaks Tavern, a spot that, Chambers says, is "like a million others in California." But bad things happen at this rural little diner — things like adultery, kinky sex and first-degree murder. The book's sinister series...

Much is being made of the fact that Stephen King has—for the time being—decided to forego an eBook of his latest novel, Joyland. Several articles imply that he is no longer a fan of the digital format. Others argue that he shouldn’t get to decide how people experience a book, ignoring the fact that digital rights are separate from print rights and that authors get to choose how to exploit them. As illustrated in my first essay here at FEARnet, King has long been a champion of eBooks—an innovator, even. There was a digital version of The Wind Through the Keyhole last year and there will be one of Doctor Sleep later on this year. King isn’t challenging the format. He simply wants readers to have the retro feeling of holding a paperback in this one case. That’s what Hard Case Crime is all about,...

Charles Ardai is a writer, editor, and television producer responsible for founding 'Hard Case Crime'; a collection of novels which includes both reprints of books from the pulp era and new novels such as Stephen King's The Colorado Kid which has since been adapted into the hit SyFy television series Haven. Their latest release is another entry from King and it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to learn that plans are already in place to bring it to the big screen by The Help's Tate Taylor. We recently had the chance to talk with Ardai about this and a whole lot more, so be sure to check out the interview in full below and details on Joyland from Titan Books. Firstly, can you tell our readers about yourself and your involvement with Joyland? Max Phillips and I created Hard Case Crime almost a decade ago,...

Ardai, who is also a producer on the TV show "Haven," spoke about the upcoming release and what fans can expect, working with Stephen King, and lots more.
Amanda Dyar: First off, can you tell us how you got involved with Joyland and why fans should pick it up?
Charles Ardai: In 2005, Hard Case Crime was fortunate enough to get to publish a new book by Stephen King called The Colorado Kid. We stayed in touch on and off over the next 8 years, and at one point Steve sent me email saying he’d just finished writing another book he thought might be right for us, and would I like to take a look. Last summer, I was invited to write an entry for a reference book called Icons of the American Comic Book: From Captain America to Wonder Woman. I had just written a chapterbook on Stephen King and comics (Drawn Into Darkness; look for it at fine eBook retailers everywhere) and I was still gonzo on the subject, so convincing myself to take the assignment took no effort at all. I had been angling to write about Archie comics – learning that King loved Archie struck me as both incongruous and perfect – but that entry had already been taken. Then I noticed that no one had taken on Tales from the Crypt; I snapped it up faster than a dervish on a roller coaster.
The real-life stories I dug up about EC and the anti-horror comics hysteria were nearly as fascinating as the comics themselves. In 1954, Dr. Fredric Wertham published his book Seduction...

Seduction of the Innocent will release on February 19, 2013. New York Times bestselling author Max Allan Collins, known for his book Road to Perdition, once again has outdone himself with Seduction of the Innocent, which blends fact and fiction in a true-thriller fashion!
Amanda Dyar: Seduction of the Innocent is an upcoming novel from yourself that focuses on the real life story of 1950s proposed ban of violent and horror-filled comic books. How did you become involved in this project, and how did you prepare for the beginning of your work?
Max Allan Collins: Seduction of the Innocent takes a fairly lighthearted approach to a serious subject, and I hope it doesn't stint on either one. The format is a Golden Age mystery -- that's the era of Rex Stout, Agatha Christie, Ellery Queen, Erle Stanley Gardner -- since the '50s setting of the novel is appropriate to that kind of story.

I was fortunate to read a small mountain of amazing fiction in 2012, but 2013 has the potential to top it with ease. In addition to the books listed below (which I would not be surprised to find sitting in my Top 10 at year’s end), there’s plenty of stuff coming by authors I’ve just discovered, not to mention all of the surprises that the year no doubt holds. In other words, we’ve got a lot to look forward to – here’s just a taste of what I’m anticipating as the new year approaches.

After the now infamous Haven episode “Sarah” aired, all fans want to know is if Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant) did actually have intimate relations with Audrey Parker’s former self Sarah, when he was zapped back to 1955 – and better yet, if the offspring from that liaison is James Cogan, aka The Colorado Kid?
From everything we know so far, it is entirely possible because Sarah Vernon (Emily Rose) never told anyone who the father of her son James was before she vanished leaving James to be raised by the kindly June Cogan in Colorado. In addition, Sarah seemed only too willing to seize the day and cherish whatever sweet moments she could with Nathan before he returned to his own timeline.
Yet when the Bolt-Gun Killer told Audrey as he held her captive that she was not the only one who loved The Colorado Kid, it makes us wonder: why...

Leave it to Stephen King to make news about books, a testament in this day and age where only young adult books make hay in the media.

The book “tells the story of a hospice worker who helps patients die painlessly. He comes into contact with a clan of roving, psychic vampires called The Tribe.”
Also, we have the cover to his Other book coming out in 2013, Joyland, a pulpy crime book we can expect to see June 4th.

Hammett, Chandler, Cain: the modern mystery thriller starts with them. They are the godfathers of that sensibility that would come to be called noir which would, in time, overflow the printed page and onto the stage, the big screen, and eventually even to television. Identified primarily with mysteries, the concept of flawed human beings ethically tripping and stumbling in a moral No Man’s Land, equidistant between Right and Wrong, Good and Bad would bleed across genre lines. There would be noir Westerns (Blood on the Moon, 1948), noir war movies (Attack!, 1956), noir horror (The Body Snatcher, 1945), even noir melodramas like Cain’s own Mildred Pierce, adapted for the screen in 1945.
But they all started with what Hammett, Chandler, and Cain did on the page, and each provided an evolutionary step which took what had once been usually dismissed as a flyweight genre dedicated to colorful private investigators and clever puzzles,...

I looked for him, but he was gone. I checked the boozy dives and the greasy spoons and the street corners where the not-nice girls hang out.
Nothing.
He was gone.
Tall guy, fedora, trench coat. You must’ve seen him. Usually smoking. He was always hanging around, poking his nose where it didn’t belong and usually getting it punched.
A real wisenheimer, too, always cracking wise.
You see him, you call. And if I find out you’ve been holding back…

It’s hard not to like Hard Case Crime. A scrappy crime novel brand since 2004, under the Titan Books umbrella since last year, Hard Case Crime has made it its mission to harken back to the painted-cover pulps of old. It does so by grabbing up unseen titles from the ancient greats like James M. Cain and by drawing fresh talent from the guts of the crime genre.
Now a major player steps up to bat again from the bullpen of Hard Case Crime. Stephen King is launching a new novel with them, Joyland. June 2013 is the release date on this bad boy, but expect it to be making waves across the literary scene over the next twelve months.
