Patti Smith: M Train (Knopf)
Smith's previous book, Just Kids (winner of the National Book Award in 2010), was straightforward biography and much loved by fans of the '70s downtown NYC music scene for its insight into her development into one of the major figures of the punk movement. M Train is also autobiographical, but has a quite different effect, reflecting, one could say, the fact that she was a writer before she was a rock 'n' roller -- and hey, the French Ministry of Culture named Smith a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, the highest artist honor of the French Republic, two years before she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
M Train is unconcerned with her music career (though her tastes in music are occasionally alluded to); instead, it bounces among what she's reading and her literary influences, her trips to various...

For Emmy winner Richard Schiff, the appeal of the recurring role of the mysterious "Mr. Fisher," tasked with finding spies on the Wgn America period drama "Manhattan," was two-fold: “I love popping in, I get great warmth when I do from everyone when I’m there and I get to play and then I go and play somewhere else. I’m really enjoying it.” And, as he reveals in our recent webcam chat (watch below), it reunited him with “West Wing” helmer Thomas Schlamme: “Tommy has directed, I think, three or four of the ones I’ve done. So we've gotten to get into our little thing, so it’s been fun to reconnect on a working level with Tom.” -Break- Watch dozens of video chats with 2015 Emmy contenders For the actor, his character "makes the place radioactive, if you will. They are already under intense pressure and feeling imprisoned.

She’s never been one for showing off too much skin, and when Carrie Underwood posted a bikini selfie via Instagram it wasn’t the typical flesh fest.
The 32-year-old “Jesus Take the Wheel” songstress smiled for the shoulders-up snapshot, adding the caption, “Vacation selfie. #IKnowImLame.”
Carrie gave birth to her first child with husband Mike Fisher on February 27th and they named their son Isaiah Michael Fisher. Mr. Fisher told press, “My wife is a trooper. It’s been awesome. It’s been really cool.

Advantageous
Written by Jacqueline Kim & Jennifer Phang
Directed by Jennifer Phang
USA, 2015
Jennifer Phang’s 2012 short film, Advantageous, was a haunting rumination on the nature of existence in a world that no longer needs you. This feature-length adaptation maintains Phang’s assured visual narrative, but a sluggish script makes for some frustrated viewing at times. Still, Phang is a filmmaker to watch. Her impeccable eye yields plenty of surprises, making Advantageous a fascinating little sci-fi gem.
What role can women play in a future crippled by overpopulation and dwindling economic resources? The answer to that question, in dystopian sci-fi fashion, is predictably grim. Gwen (Jacqueline Kim) is a beautiful, intelligent professional whose approaching middle-age has exposed some troubling realities. The company where she works, a biomedical engineering firm dedicated to maximizing physical readiness, is thinking about ‘youth-sizing’ Gwen; replacing her with a younger counterpart that better represents the company’s image.

Earlier this week, Wgn America ordered a second season of "Manhattan," which pleased me and a number of you. A few thoughts on tonight's season finale, and season 1 as a whole, coming up just as soon as I run for town council... For a while there, it seemed like "Perestroika" was going to present a great victory for Frank at an even greater cost — not unlike what will happen when the fruits of the Manhattan Project will be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The gun model has been dismissed, and the government is putting all of its mighty resources behind Frank and his team of misfits — but only after the deaths of Sid Liao and Reed Akley, the arrest of Charlie, Fritz ingesting the plutonium, Lancefield being framed for espionage, Glen kicked off the project, etc. The collateral damage is remarkable, yet the victory — both the support of a model that will work,...

Implosion. Pre-detonation. Radioactivity. Meltdowns. The terms that define Wgn’s atomic bomb drama Manhattan also apply to its characters, a mix of men and women trying to stop a world war by creating a weapon that could destroy the planet completely. There isn't a simple equation among them. Throughout season one, which came to an end Sunday night with its thirteenth episode (“Perestroika”), the show mastered the art of contradiction, presenting heroes you root for even as they betray their own better natures. In the finale, the scientists of Los Alamos are still far from the breakthroughs they will need...

The American Family Association accuses Glee of being too gay, likens it to “injection drug use!”
We are all huge Santana fans over here at HollywoodLife.com, and are so thrilled that Naya Rivera has been chosen to host the 2011 GLAAD Media Awards on May 14! The actress, who plays a bi-sexual cheerleader on Glee, will take the stage in San Francisco on May 14, as the awards honor Sex and the City‘s Kim Cattrall and other media members who have spread awareness of the Lgbt community. Glee has often tackled Lgbt issues in its storylines, but now it is coming under fire for doing so.
Houston’s Kriv-fox 26 aired a news segment discussing the gay characters on Glee in which Bryan Fischer, head of the American Family Association, said being gay “just as risky and just as dangerous as injection drug use.” He adds that being gay “bears enormous psychological and physical risks.

I may not have liked Inception quite as much as a lot of people, but I have to admit (as I have been known to say frequently) I would rather see people try to do something great and fail (or not quite get there), than sit through yet another example of trying to do something mindlessly aimed at the lowest common denominator and succeed brilliantly.
While I think Nolan ultimately ran away with himself (see full review below), and could have used some other sounding board (brilliant things can be tricky to understand... so too nonsensical things), I also think he is nevertheless one of the most talented filmmakers working today. It may have folded over on itself too many times, but the film is still a fun adventure with amazing visuals, and thoroughly entertaining.
The release is somewhat light on bonuses, especially considering it is the film everyone was...

For most purposes, the words “complicated” and “complex” are synonyms. When you dig around a little though, there is a big difference between the two concepts, at least, if you ask a lot of philosophers and thinkers. Generally, a thing is as complex as it is, but it isn’t too complex, or not complex enough. At the same time, it makes sense to think of some things as simple and complex. Things can be too complicated though, and it is hard to imagine something being simple and complicated at the same time.
It is largely an odd and unnecessary distinction, but it serves well to grasp where people often go wrong in their attempt to make things seem quite clever. You see, the things that stand out as seeming very intelligent are usually rather complex, and when in doubt the idea is invariably to make a thing ever more complicated.
