Nathan and Daniel wake at the scene of a car crash, confused and seemingly unscathed. The two men begin to slowly understand that they did not make it. They are dead. Nathan’s previous acts will now determine his fate, however reprehensible they might have been. He will have to leave this earthly world and enter the depths of Hell that await him for all eternity and be confronted with other tormented souls whose pain he will be forced to experience…
Essentially an anthology, Pandemonium feels heavily inspired by the likes of Dante’s Inferno and it’s seven circles of hell, with Nathan only beginning his descent into hell – viewing the scions and stories of those who have come before him in two very different stories, with Nathan’s own story – a car crash, causing the...

Hitman dramedy “Knok,” pandemic-thriller “Lt-21,” and dystopian sendup “Rictus” will head off Have A Good One’s (Hago) Mipcom slate, as the Paris-based TV development and sales company has boarded two additional series currently in production.
Produced by Mifa Pictures (Groupe StoryPlus) and N22 Productions for 13ème Rue France, and created by Guillaume Duhesme, Bastien Ughetto and Lucie Moreau, the off-kilter “Knok” follows a hapless single-dad inducted into the underworld and made an unwilling contract-killer after accidentally witnessing a hit. César-winner Sylvie Testud (“Fear and Trembling”) and up-and-comer Johann Cuny lead the cast for a loopy six-part season that won acclaim at the La Rochelle Fiction Festival earlier this year.
Given the spotlight at the Biarritz Unifrance Rendez-vous last month, eco-thriller “Lt-21” tracks a disquieting pandemic plot about an international virus that forces amnesia on those afflicted. Actors Arnaud Valois (“Bpm”) and Léonie Simaga (“The Eddy”) play a pair doctors...

"You forgot one thing. I'm indestructible." Netflix has revealed the trailer for the French streaming series Class Act, which is the offical English name. The original French title is Tapie, which is the name of the person this biopic series is about, but he might not be that well recognized outside of France. A relentlessly ambitious working-class man becomes one of France's most controversial public figures in this fictionalized biopic about Bernard Tapie, starring César nominee Laurent Lafitte. "It revisits the origins of the Tapie phenomenon, who didn’t start off quite so well, between a career in music cut short, small business issues, meeting Dominique, and his difficult relationship with his parents... In all this, his relentless determination, carried by a completely possessed performance by Lafitte." The cast includes Joséphine Japy, Ophélia Kolb, Ivan Murphy, Antoine Reinartz, Hakim Jemili, Camille Chamoux, and Fabrice Luchini. Looks like France's version of the businessman's rise & fall story.

Ophelia Kolb in French TV psychological thriller “What Pauline is Not Telling You” on MHz Choice. Courtesy of MHz Choice
It’s harder than usual to decide on a reliable 1 – 4 star rating for this four-part dramatic miniseries from French TV, “What Pauline Is Not Telling You” (“Ce Que Pauline Ne Vous Dit Pas”). One might love or hate it, depending on mood, and the extent to which any given viewer relates to the characters and situations in this very personal suspense tale.
Pauline (Ophelia Kolb) is the divorced mother of two. Her ex, Olivier, was a rich jerk from very prominent family, adored by his mother, admired by his father, and loathed by his brother, whose existence had been mostly shrouded by the glare of his sibling’s limelight. We meet Pauline embarrassed at the grocery store by an unexpected lack of funds, then driving home with the kids while...

In the decade between adolescence and adulthood, Vincent Lacoste has grown one of contemporary French cinema’s great faces: at once beautiful and wonky, shaped by mischief and worry, like a Belmondo reflected in the surface of a choppy lake. That we get to see it move, think and crumple in ways we haven’t quite before is the strongest selling point of “Amanda,” a film already not short on unassuming charm. Following a sweetly feckless twentysomething jolted into adulthood when tragedy appoints him the guardian of his seven-year-old niece, it tells a familiar story furrowed by quiet emotional conviction, much of it in Lacoste’s unhurried, unaffected turn. A nourishingly classical tear-jerker as well as a glowing valentine to Paris’s endurance in the age of modern terrorism, Mikhaël Hers’s third feature will count on warm festival word of mouth to boost its distribution prospects.
