The upcoming docuseries ‘First Act’ showcases the experiences of child actors and their parents in the Hindi TV and film industry. The series highlights the important role played by both parents and the industry in safeguarding the well-being of children.
“This was a project that had been sitting with me on the back burner for some time. Child actors are an integral part of the Indian film and television industry, and many beautiful stories would not be as impactful without them.
“However, these artistes face a unique set of challenges that I felt needed to be shared. I am so delighted that professionals who started their careers as child actors have come forward to support this project, in addition to the stalwarts,” said Deepa Bhatia, the director of the series.

The first-ever on-screen adaption of Issac Asimov's beloved, award-winning science fiction novels is coming to AppleTV+. In June, TV Fanatic revealed that Foundation premieres on September 24, with three of the ten episodes ready to stream globally.
Foundation has an ensemble cast full of familiar and fresh faces, from Emmy winners Jared Harris and Lee Pace to up-and-comers such as Lou Llobell and Leah Harvey.
TV Fanatic recently got the chance to chat with actress Kubbra Sait about her role as Phara in the series. Known as a TV Host and Emcee in her native India, this is her first time breaking into American media.
Congratulations on the new show! What attracted you to Foundation?
I was called in for an interview by Tess Joseph in India. It was a global casting for the role of Phara, [meaning that she] could be anyone. The audition process was tight-lipped, but the fun was in guessing what I was auditioning for.

Amit Sadh, who will soon be seen in the web series 7 Kadam, says that the biggest change in Bollywood over the years has been the process of casting actors.
"I think the biggest change in the industry is the process of casting. I am grateful to all my great casting directors - Tess Joseph, Shruti Mahajan, Shanu, and Mukesh Chhabra, who I respect and will always be grateful for casting me in 'Kai Po Che!'. If these casting directors weren't around, I wouldn't be around!" he told Ians.
The actor says that thanks to casting directors, more people are getting work now. He also adds that there are a lot of other changes in the industry that are making it a better workplace.
"We are evolving, we are changing, we were a great industry, and we will continue to be a great industry. There is no criticism here or (anything) negative.

This year, the motion picture academy achieved its five-year goal of doubling the number of women among its membership. In all, 819 film professionals were invited to become part of the organization that hands out the Oscars. Compare this intake to the totals of the previous five years: 842 in 2019; a record 928 in 2018; 774 in 2017; 683 in 2016; 322 in 2015; and 271 in 2014.
While Academy Awards nominees are automatically eligible for consideration, the rest of the candidates must go through a fairly cumbersome process. A candidate must meet certain branch specific requirements before even being eligible.
For example, actors must “have a minimum of three theatrical feature film credits, in all of which the roles played were scripted roles, one of which was released in the past five years, and all of which are of a caliber that reflect the high standards of the Academy.” For writers, directors and producers they need have just two of these credits.

The #MeToo movement arrived late in India. But it is a juggernaut that is here to stay, and is having a measurable effect on production.
Aamir Khan Productions is to withdraw from a film where one of the filmmakers is accused of harassment in a 2014 case that is currently sub-judice. “This is an opportunity for the film industry to introspect and take concrete steps towards change,” actor/producer Aamir Khan and producer Kiran Rao tweeted in a joint statement. “For far too long women have borne the brunt of sexual exploitation. It has to stop.”
The movement kicked off with actress Tanushree Dutta accusing veteran actor Nana Patekar of harassment on the sets of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleasss” in 2008, an allegation she made then and again last week. This was followed by harassment allegations against Phantom Films founding partner Vikas Bahl by an employee. That led to the dissolution of the company.

Casting directors have a strange distinction in the awards world: Their guild has an Academy branch, but it’s the only one without its own Oscar category. Imagine for a moment that they did. What are the best-cast films of 2016?
IndieWire asked 13 of the top casting directors to nominate films worthy of casting recognition this year. There were a few restrictions worth noting. Although casting directors often get early sneak peeks at films, many noted there are some films they still hadn’t seen. In particular, many are anxious to find out what legendary casting director Ellen Lewis has cooked up for Martin Scorsese’s “Silence.” The other restriction, which was imposed as responses came in: They couldn’t all write about “Moonlight.” (We’ll dig further into the casting of that film in another article.)

There may be no human rights issue in the modern world that is harder to visualize than the enslavement and sale of children, but that is story told in Sold, which is now having its European premiere at the London Indian Film Festival after opening in Los Angles earlier this year. Based on Patricia McCormick’s book of the same title and compiled based on real-life stories, Sold is a hard-hitting but hope filled saga of a young girl named Lakshmi who is sold into a prison brothel. Through her eyes, we experience her horrors but also the moments of goodness and hope that give her the courage to ultimately escape. It is a powerful tale, and the film and the issues it exposes has changed the lives of everyone involved.
