Exclusive: Tony Hawk long ago conquered the skateboarding world and next up on his list of tricks is animation.
The legendary skateboard champion has teamed with Montreal’s Laughing Dragon Studios to develop Skatebirds, an animated TV series aimed at kids aged 6-11.
The series, inspired by Hawk’s ‘Birdman’ nickname, will aim to “celebrate skateboarding’s playful community while emphasising its adventurous nature,” producers say.
Skatebirds will revolve around “a group of young skateboard enthusiasts, who just happen to be birds, who flock together to support their hometown and show the world that when they put their feathers together, they can do anything they set their minds to.”
The series will theme around teamwork, friendship and community — some of the elements of the skateboarding community that Hawk’s feats helped foster. Hawk previously created The Skatepark Project, which helps to fund public skateparks across the U.S. and in...

Looking For Group #6 sees the continuation of the dysfunctional pick-up group’s quest to bring peace to the North. Cale the Elven Hunter, Richard the Warlock, Benny the Troll Priestess, Krunch the Minotaur, and Pella the Dwarf have traveled to the fabled city of Kethenecia, gone back in time to save the city, fought Richard’s rebellious imp minion and his evil forces, and, more recently, waged war on the Kingdom of Legara, a nation determined to conquer the Northlands. Despite the battles and the diplomatic intrigue, however, Richard once again basks in the limelight as issue #6 provides tantalizing tidbits of his backstory as he is brought to trial by the forces of darkness for allegedly performing good deeds while questing with Cale and company.

After defeating Richard’s former imp minion in issue #4, the sharp-witted warlock and his companions, Cale, Benny, Krunch, and Pella, are back for more fantasy Mmorpg-style antics. Issue #5 sees the progression of the main story arc as Cale continues to pursue his destiny by destroying the Vulii and their Kingdom of Legara. And, more importantly, Richard continues to wreak havoc in ever more entertaining and hilarious ways.
The book opens with the dysfunctional pick-up group at sea heading for the northlands. After they make landfall, they scout the area and find a rather large outpost housing “over two hundred soldiers, including six battlemages and two clerics.” Cale, stupidly, decides to attack and the whole party gets captured and, to Richard’s delight, tortured – while being broken out of the prison,...

Looking For Group #4 continues Sohmer’s and DeSouza’s comedic tale about a group of mismatched, but goodhearted, adventurers. This series weaves a great deal of fantasy fiction and Mmorpg tropes into every issue, and issue #4 does not break from that formula. Lfg always blends plenty of comedy into its story arcs, too, and this issue does not disappoint in that regard. With the appearance of Richard’s mistreated and angry imp minion, Hctib, as an enemy, issue #4 actually raises the comedy factor a couple of levels.
Before going into the story synopsis, take a moment to contemplate Richard’s imp’s name: Hctib. Read it backward and forward. Write it down and hold it up to a mirror if you have to. Once you get the meaning...

Ryan Sohmer’s and Lar DeSouza’s brilliantly entertaining comic detailing the adventures of a hastily thrown together group of adventurers continues in issue #3 of Looking for Group. While there is a quest and a large cast of characters, this book has more in common with a late night pick up group in an Mmorpg than it does The Lord of the Rings – and this is a good thing. There are plenty of little nods and homages to both the Mmorpg genre and its pencil-and-paper originators ,such as Dungeons & Dragons. For example, in this issue, a slightly befuddled beholder makes an appearance simply to utter a prophecy then wander off to drool in a corner. It’s fair enough to say that the webcomics community and the mainstream comics industry are every constantly amalgamating into one entity. If it’s not clear enough with names like Noelle Stevenson and Ryan North being printed on books from the big two, Dynamite is coming out this week with an issue of the long running webcomic Looking for Group.
The series follows Cale’anon, a naïve but well-meaning elf, who finds himself in the wrong crowd: a psychopathic and insanely powerful warlock named Richard, a disgruntled Orcish cleric called Gid, and a shockingly nuanced Minotaur by the name of Krunch. Together, they find themselves constantly on the wrong side of the law and swept up in the petty conflicts of kings and warlords. The story has a...

First and foremost, The Gutters was a twice weekly webcomic that made fun of various aspects of the comics industry. It took the comics news of that week and spinned into something hilarious and self-contained with a rotating cast of artists, including ones you might know like Annie Wu (Hawkeye), Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan), Joe Eisma (Morning Glories), Nick Bradshaw (Wolverine and the X-Men), and even comics legend Neal Adams, who pencilled a heartfelt tribute to the late Joe Kubert in 2012. The humor of The Gutters is highly topical. However, in the tradition of the best Mad Magazine strips or SNL sketches, it can act as a nice time capsule to 2010 when people were arguing whether Steve Rogers or Bucky Barnes (or Clint Barton) should be Captain America, or 2012 when the circle of snark around...

Hawaii set to move on marriage equality, Pope Francis speaks against Christians of ideology, could Martian Manhunter to become a Glbt super hero?
Jamie Dornan has been cast as Christian Grey, replacing Charlie Hunnam, who dropped out of the role. As a relatively unknown actor, this could break big for him. In 2006, when a model for Calvin Klein, he was called “The Golden Torso” which means he can pull off the nudity with ease.
New Mexico’s Supreme Court heard arguments in the marriage equality case yesterday. The lawyer for the Republican legislators opposing equality mostly argued a procreation defense, but at least one justice wasn’t having it. “Marriage is much more than a vehicle for natural procreation.” He then noted that the state doesn’t have a litmus test for heterosexual couples’ desire for children before they get married.

I have a certain fascination with the Minions from Despicable Me. And they're getting their own spinoff, in which we learn that the Minions have always been around, working for supervillains, but ultimately undoing them all with their ineptitude. They set out to find a new villain and end up with Scarlett Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock. Scarlett is described as having Audrey Hepburn style and the ambition to become the world's first female supervillain.
The Pentagon officially announced they will be extending some benefits to same-sex couples as allowed by Doma, including ID cards and joint postings. Still, it falls short of full equality, even under Doma. Interestingly, the changes are set to be implemented between August 31 and October 1, which could be two months after Doma is no longer a consideration.
Forget Sexy Princess Leia Slave. Try Slave Leo.

We told you Friday that Zachary Quinto was returning for the second season of American Horror Story, joining Jessica Lange. At the Paley Fest round table it was announced that hottie Evan Peters, along with Sarah Paulson and Lily Rabe would also return. All Ryan Murphy will say is they're playing characters who are the opposite of what they played before, which is a shame, because I found Tate all sorts of sexy, in an ax murderer sort of way.

Once upon a time there was a powerful Wizard who had evil in his heart. He saw the comic world as a place he could bend to his will. And for a time, publishing companies flocked to him as loyal lap-dogs. Their best artists and writers were doled out to him to make appearances at his traveling circus. He was gloriously powerful, but feared his mortality. Soon, his spells… terrible fluff charms with no bite or news illusions presented way past their prime… weakened his power. The Wizard flailed madly to stay relevant. The people of the comic world simply stopped paying attention. His power dwindled. His traveling circus became a geek show of tired acts. He was left with no choice. He took the few followers he’d kept a grasp on, and sucked their life force… and ran into the forest. And there he stayed, seething, and cursing the public for abandoning him.

Gentle reader, I know it's been an eon and a half since last I told you to dust off that bookmark button. But to be honest, I've been buried in the same set of webcomics for a long time now, with nothing piquing my interest as such... until now. Found literally by happenstance, I bring to you today a webcomic that is not like any other I've brought to you thus far. I bring to you... The Gutters.
Produced and written by Ryan Sohmer, the same dude that puts out a former Webcomic You Should Be Reading, Least I Could Do, The Gutters is truly a unique webcomic beast. Instead of a singular cast, The Gutters uses today's comic books as fodder for content. Expressing a gripe about "One More Day" or "Blackest Night," or offering a more general comics in-joke, the strip skewers just about everyone in the industry.

It seems the least Ryan Sohmer and Lar DeSouza could do was offer a full scholarship.
Ryan announced on the Least I Could Do website on Friday that they have created "The Rayne Summers Webcomic Scholarship", at The Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont:
Beginning in the fall of '10, we will be covering the full tuition for the selected applicant. The applicant who, I might add, is working towards a career in webcomics. Over the course of the next 5 years, we plan on adding 1 student per year, thus by 2015, the Scholarship will be putting 5 students through the program per year.
This scholarship will be managed by Blind Ferret, though there will be heavy involvement from others in our field, in the form of a board of Directors and a selection committee.
More information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks, including fund raising events, application rules and deadlines and more.
