There's only two more episodes of X-Men '97 to go, and Marvel Studios has released a clip from tomorrow's penultimate season 1 chapter, "Tolerance is Extinction - Part 2."
The preview finds our mutant heroes suiting-up in new costumes for their impending battle with Bastion and his forces.
The outfits are a mixture of the team's classic looks, and the costumes they wore in the pages of The Uncanny X-Men. The clip also sees Jubilee burn Roberto DaCosta's business card, so Sunspot must have decided not to join the fight.
Former showrunner Beau DeMayo hinted at the costume change when he shared the unused pilot for Pryde of the X-Men earlier today.
DeMayo was also asked if he's ever heard any talk of adding Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat to the X-Men '97 roster.
"I haven’t, but my suspicion is Jubilee and Kitty slightly compete in terms of their age and Pov on the team.

For superhero fans of a certain age, there was nothing quite like waking up early on Saturday mornings to tune in for a new episode of "X-Men: The Animated Series." With fast-paced soap opera storytelling, snappy one-liners, and the most radical animation style on TV, "X-Men: The Animated Series" was the perfect gateway to get kids hooked on all things Marvel.
Now, over 25 years since the original series went off the air, Marvel and Disney+ have continued the saga with "X-Men '97," a series so good that it's already being hailed as one of the best new shows of the year. What makes "X-Men '97" such a triumph is not just its perfectly executed nostalgia, but because the show has evolved to relate to the sensibilities of our 2024 world, without becoming anachronistic in the process. The Marvel Studios finally made way for the X-Men to join the MCU and leave behind Fox, following this year’s Deadpool 3. Thereafter, fans certainly cannot wait for the new version of the X-Men to arrive in full force, especially after the critical success of X-Men ’97. Meanwhile, following fans’ excitement, Henry Zaga recently opened up about his desire to return as Sunspot in the MCU.
Henry Zaga in The New Mutants
Previously appearing in Marvel’s 2020 horror sci-fi movie The New Mutants, Henry Zaga played the role of Roberto da Costa aka Sunspot. This article contains spoilers for X-Men ’97 episode 4.
Rising from the ashes of X-Men: The Animated Series like a Dark Phoenix, X-Men ‘97 has done a stellar job of bringing fan-favorites like Scott, Jean, and Wolverine back into the fray. While Marvel Studios’ producer Brad Winderbaum has revealed that production is already underway for seasons 2 and 3, some sneaky hints suggest that the lineup of this colorful cartoon caper could soon look a little different.
The Original X-Men
X-Men ‘97 has largely stuck with the series staples of X-Men: The Animated Series, albeit with the additions of Morph and Bishop while swapping out Professor Xavier for a reformed Magneto. Several Easter eggs have referenced both old and new teams, with the season premiere reminding us the current roster is far from the original lineup of Charles Xavier’s Gifted Youngsters.
A nostalgic picture of the “original” team is on display at the school.

Warming: this article contains spoilers for the "X-Men '97" episode "Motendo / Lifedeath, Part 1," so proceed with caution.
Since "X-Men '97" is a revival of "X-Men: The Animated Series," the creators of the nostalgic continuation of the Marvel mutants' story made sure to bring back as many of the original voice actors as they could. Sadly, both Norm Spencer (Cyclops) and David Hemblen (Magneto) passed away in 2020, making them unable to return, but Ray Chase and Matthew Waterson are doing fantastic jobs filling in their respective shoes. Meanwhile, Jennifer Hale replaces Catherine Disher as Jean Grey, Chris Potter switched from Gambit to Cable for "X-Men '97," with A.J. LoCascio taking over as the Ragin' Cajun, and Morph is now voiced J.P. Karliak.
But there was one voice actor from "X-Men: The Animated Series" who purposely opted not to reprise their role in order to allow someone else the opportunity that otherwise...

As the title indicates, "X-Men '97" is firmly set in the decade in which the original "X-Men: The Animated Series" debuted, the gloriously colorful '90s. So when Jubilee turns 18 in the fourth episode of the animate series revival, it only makes sense that she wants to take all of her mutant teammates to the arcade to celebrate. Unfortunately, the X-Men's new leader Magneto isn't having it, which prompts Jubilee to vent her frustrations to the newest X-Men recruit, Roberto da Costa (aka Sunspot), while hanging out in her room.
That's when Roberto notices that Jubilee really is a gamer, noticing a game console sitting next to the TV in her bedroom. But even though Jubilee genuinely believes that the only people who hate video games are bad at video games, that console doesn't belong to her. Instead, the Motendo is actually a sneaky trap created by...

This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
It takes five minutes for “Motendo” segment of the latest episode of X-Men ’97 to reveal its big bad. A stomach-churning yellow creature covered in metal appears on screen and yells, “I am Mojo, your primetime psycho inter dimensional TV producer who feeds off ratings!”
That’s actually a pretty good description for Mojo, one of the strangest Marvel villains of all time. The “Motendo” segment finds Mojo kidnapping Jubilee and Roberto Da Costa (not yet taking his Sunspot moniker) and sending them into a video game. There, they battle various computerized baddies and garner praise from an audience, which in turn makes Mojo more powerful.
Unsurprisingly, the segment includes plenty of nods to the history of X-Men video games. And if you’re the type of person who got upset that the episode used a Snes portmanteau to describe a system that looked...

In the original "X-Men" animated series, we're introduced to Marvel's mutant characters by way of Jubilee, a teen girl who has just discovered that she has mutant powers, which puts her in danger of being pursued by the dangerous Sentinels under the Mutant Registration Act. Rescued by the X-Men, Jubilee becomes a young new recruit on the team, and she acts as a proxy for the audience to be introduced to the world of Professor Charles Xavier and his School for the Gifted.
However, when "X-Men: The Animated Series" came to an end with the fifth season, Jubilee had become a full-fledged member of the team. Her wardrobe even changed to reflect that she'd grown up a bit, and the episode "Jubilee's Fairytale Theater" affirmed that the rest of the X-Men viewed her as an equally formidable mutant. Thankfully, "X-Men '97" provides a similar entry point for new viewers...

X-Men helped to pave the way for our current cornucopia of comic-book movies, but the Twentieth Century Fox franchise sadly went out with a whimper with its final movie. The New Mutants centered around five young people brought to a secret institution to undergo treatments they are told will cure them of the dangers of their abilities, but the institution isn’t quite what they think it is. If you haven’t managed to watch The New Mutants since its release, then you might be interested to know that it will be getting a fresh start on Disney+ next month.

The New Mutants is an odd duck. The writing was on the wall back in 2017 when 20th Century Fox first pushed the film off its original 2018 release window. Apparently the delay was the result of the studio wanting to make it more of a horror movie via reshoots… reshoots that then never happened.
Even so, those horror elements are still on bonkers display in Josh Boone’s final cut of the film, now available on Blu-ray and VOD. Even without knowing Boone was vocal that the Nightmare on Elm Street movies were cornerstone influences, it’s clear his mutant mayhem wants to live on the same block.
To be sure, these aspects are more muted than they should be, which is the result of the film’s biggest problem: tonal inconsistency. New Mutants veers wildly between young adult drama, youthful hijinks, and...

When The New Mutants went into production in early 2017, it was still part of what was once known unofficially as the Fox Marvel Universe: a collection of films based around the Marvel characters that 20th Century Fox owned the screen rights to and had no intention of giving up to Marvel Studios parent company Disney.
As director Josh Boone — a big fan of the comics — has explained, The New Mutants was meant as a different kind of superhero thriller, with the aesthetic and tone of a horror movie. In fact, it was meant to be the first of a trilogy, with each entry capturing a different horror movie feel. And yes, according to Boone, it was meant to be tied at least tangentially to the larger X-Men film series, which was reaching a climactic point with 2019’s Dark Phoenix.

It used to be that multiple delays to a movie’s release date were a sign that something was wrong with the project. But in the case of Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants,” the fact that even a global coronavirus pandemic isn’t forcing the movie to budge from its drop-dead Aug. 28 opening (after multiple postponements back when moviegoing was thought to be safe for one’s health) is what looks like a red flag. Why would Disney, which acquired the project when it bought Fox last year, dump this orphaned X-Men spinoff into theaters mere days before launching “Mulan” on its proprietary streaming platform?
The answer: because Disney couldn’t keep delaying it forever, but also because this inclusive, female-empowering, youth-centric addition to the already overcrowded X-Men universe had lost its luster. After having been greenlit as a fresh take on a successful franchise by a hot up-and-coming director,...

In The New Mutants, five teenagers are being held in an asylum that is actually a front for a secret government facility. The five don’t know each other and aren’t sure how they got there or who brought them, but one thing is clear: each of them is a mutant, a human being enhanced or endowed with extraordinary powers, representing the next stage of evolution for humankind.
The New Mutants is a spin-off of Fox’s long-running X-Men series of films and based on the classic Marvel comic book created in 1982 by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod to showcase a new, younger group of mutants within the existing X-Men canon. Directed by Josh Boone, who describes his movie as a “rubber reality” horror movie, The New Mutants might be what happens when you cross The Breakfast Club with A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Arriving this week in physical theaters is The New Mutants, the last X-Men movie produced under the 20th Century Fox banner before Disney bought its rival studio and absorbed all its film properties, including the Marvel franchises previously optioned by Fox.
Based on the comics created in 1982 by writer Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod, The New Mutants tells the story of five young mutants, each with their own powers. They are being held in a secret facility against their wills and seek a way to escape, all while discovering the extent of their abilities.
While The New Mutants is technically a spin-off of Fox’s main X-Men movies, director and co-writer Josh Boone intended to give it its own feel — specifically, that of a horror movie. But plans were also afoot to connect the fledgling team to the larger universe of the X-Men through the time-honored tradition of the post-credits sequence.

Well, we’ve got three and a half weeks to go and they haven’t pulled it yet, so it seems like The New Mutants might actually be coming out at last. The New Mutants has taken so long in coming out that you can hardly call it new anymore, seeing as it was shot in 2017, but at long last it’s on the verge of arriving. Last weekend, 20th Century Studios revealed a thrilling trailer and the opening minutes of the superhero flick that’ll take things in more of a psychological horror direction. Now, this extended synopsis has been released which clarifies more about the plot, as well as confirming a major X-Men connection.

After two years of delays, 20th Century Fox released the trailer for the X-Men spinoff “The New Mutants.”
Inspired by “The New Mutants” Marvel graphic novel published in 1982, director Josh Boone’s spinoff brings some horror into the X-Men universe. It opens on Blu Hunt’s (“The Originals”) Danielle Moonstar sitting in darkness when a voice asks her, “What’s the last thing you remember, Dani?” Faces emerge from the darkness, there’s a scream, and Dani replies, “You said we had to run.”
Then the action begins.
The movie follows five young mutants, just as they’re discovering their powers, held against their will in a secret facility as they fight to escape. It stars Anya Taylor-Joy (“Split”) as the Russian mutant Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball and Henry Zaga (“Looking for Alaska”) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot.

Updates for The New Mutants have been coming in thick and fast lately, with the release of the rather decent full-length trailer silencing people who remained skeptical that the film would ever actually see the light of day, and now a couple of new photos give a clear look at the titular quintet of troubled young adults.
One of the images is a still taken directly from the trailer, and although it’s not clear if the other is from elsewhere in the film or a posed publicity still, it’s worth nothing the similarity of the costumes the characters are wearing, which match how each of them is dressed throughout much of the preview, suggesting the film takes place over a very short length of time given the preponderance of limitless wardrobes that every individual in mainstream fiction seems to possess.
