Bruce Tuchman-backed Rialto International has launched a branded on-demand streaming service in Japan, focused on independent film, and housed on Amazon’s Prime Video Channels platform.
Rialto Channel launched in 1999 in New Zealand, where it was initially branded as The Sundance Channel. It established itself as an award-winning and industry-leading indie film destination for over twenty years.
In Japan, the Rialto-branded venue will feature current and iconic independent films. Mars Reel, a digital-media startup focused on high-school basketball athletes and teams, has closed its $4.7 million initial funding round with new investments from Drake, NBA star Dwayne Wade and Otter Media, now part of At&T’s WarnerMedia.
In addition to its cash investment, Otter Media will also serve as an adviser and strategic partner for Mars Reel in several areas. The new investors join a host of other previously announced backers from the worlds of sports and media, including NBA players LeBron James, Shane Battier, and Kevin Durant; hip-hop artist Nas; and actor Cedric Stewart.

MGM's lion will speak italiano under a groundbreaking deal between MGM Networks and News Corp.'s Sky Italia, the leading pay television service in Italy. The local-language version of the MGM Channel will launch June 1.
"Italy is one of the key European markets that remained untapped for us, and now with this deal, we add an incredible jewel to our crown of channels in Europe," MGM Networks executive vp Bruce Tuchman said.
Dubbed into Italian, the MGM Channel will feature a wide selection of titles from the MGM movie catalog.

CANNES -- MGM Networks is saying "Shalom" to a new high-definition version of its localized channel in Israel starting this month, MGM said Tuesday.
The new HD version of Israel's MGM channel, 100% owned by MGM, will be simulcast together with the existing standard network in the territory, both of which will be subtitled in Hebrew.
Israel's MGM Channel will air as part of the HD basic tier of Israeli DTH platform YES then move gradually over the next few months to a 24/7 simulcast of the current standard MGM Channel.
"As high definition begins to roll out all over the world, MGM plans to be at the forefront of this compelling new medium," executive vp of MGM Networks Bruce Tuchman said in a statement.
Israel's localized HD channel marks the company's third HD network launch in the last 18 months. MGM's channels are available in more than 120 countries worldwide and broadcast in almost 20 languages.

The wholly-owned channel will be carried by Warburg Pincus-owned local cable operator Eurocom.
"MGM Networks has been on a roll across Central and Eastern Europe," Tuchman said. "Starting from scratch just a few years ago, we have built a vibrant collection of locally versioned MGM-branded channels now reaching most of the countries in the region. We are very pleased to have Eurocom on board for our launch into Bulgaria, and we are excited to tap into further distribution opportunities as we move forward in this growing market and across the region."...

MGM Networks will launch an MGM Channel customized for local audiences in the Netherlands and Flemish-speaking Belgium, it was announced Monday. Subtitled in Dutch with on-air packaging targeted to the local market, the new MGM channel will be transmitted and distributed through a cooperation agreement with Chellomedia, the European based content division of Liberty Global.
Currently, the English-language version of the MGM Channel is carried on all major cable systems in the Netherlands, but with this new deal, MGM and Chellomedia intend to provide customers, starting in September, with an even more valuable and compelling offering that will replace the existing English language version. In addition, through this deal, the MGM Channel will debut for the first time in Belgium.
