Charli Xcx is back with “360,” her latest single and the opening track of her forthcoming album, Brat.
Featuring a percussive synth-scape that’s a signature sound of Brat producer A. G. Cook, “360” sees Charli deliver an infectious melody with crisp, hyperpop vocals. On the second verse, she name-drops Cook (“You gon’ jump if A. G. made it”) and for the chorus, she sings a memorable refrain shouting out her good friend, Julia Fox, with lyrics, “When you’re in the mirror, do you like what you see?/ When you’re in the mirror, you’re just looking at me/ I’m everywhere, I’m so Julia.”
Arriving alongside the single is a cinematic music video starting with a sketch about Charli attending a meeting to “fulfill the prophecy of finding a new ‘Hot Internet Girl,'” along with Rachel Sennott, Chloe Cherry, Richie Shazam, Gabbriette (from the band Nasty Cherry), and Fox herself.

After airing an astonishingly unnerving advertisement for the new iPad Pro earlier this week, Apple issued an apology on Thursday.
The clip — which shows an array of creative tools such as a guitar, piano, trumpet, and bottles of paint being crushed by a hydraulic press — was widely criticized. Other items being pulverized included an Angry Bird statue and arcade cabinet.
“Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” the company’s VP of marketing communications,...

Update, 3:08 Pm: Apple CEO Tim Cook’s X post on the much condemned “Crush” ad for the new iPad Pro has been viewed around 53 million times and the in-house produced promo is still on the tech giant’s YouTube page, but Apple is now saying sorry.
“Our goal is to always celebrate the myriad of ways users express themselves and bring their ideas to life through iPad,” Apple marketing kingpin Tor Myhren told Ad Age today as the backlash intensified. “We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”
Well, maybe not that sorry – as after two days they still haven’t taken the literally and figuratively destructive ad down.
Previously May 8 Am: Apple’s new iPad Pro isn’t hitting the shelves for another week, but the self-described “thinnest Apple product yet” is already being crushed because of a new ad.

Apple is apologizing for an iPad Pro ad that was widely criticized when it debuted earlier this week.
The dystopian spot, titled “Crush,” shows several instruments, including a guitar and piano, being crushed by a hydraulic press. Also among the items being smashed flat are balls that look like emojis and an Angry Birds statue.

It seems at first like a brilliant, if unsubtle, piece of dystopian satire: countless symbols of human creativity — books, musical instruments, artworks, arcade games — crowded onto a platform and slowly, painfully, sadistically pancaked between the massive metal jaws of a machine. An upright piano splinters and cracks. Paint gushes like blood. With its bleak industrial aesthetic, the clip mirrors the look — but inverts the point — of one of the most famous advertisements in television history: Ridley Scott’s 1984 spot for Apple, in which a colorfully dressed female Olympian tosses a hammer into a screen and shatters the televised face of an Orwellian Big Brother, breaking his authoritarian grip on society. With the release of the new Macintosh computer, the ad concluded, “You’ll see why 1984 won’t be like 1984,” suggesting that personal computing was a force of liberation.

In its second collaboration with the Marché du Film’s Goes to Cannes showcase strand, Australia’s Queer Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival will unveil four projects and a finished film, all looking for global sales, distribution, top-up financing and festival selection.
The five projects to be pitched May 18, will vie for the first €10,000 Goes to Cannes Award.
“We set out to curate a selection that embraces a rich tapestry of stories and identities, while also giving prominence to Australian talent,” says festival director Lisa Rose about her program, which “showcases narratives spanning the spectrum of gay, lesbian, pansexual, bisexual, and transgender experience.”
For instance, “From All Sides” fearlessly tackles queer sexuality, “a rarity in cinema originating from Western Sydney, says Rose, who also cites “Strange Creatures” and its story about two brothers, one of whom identifies as pansexual, as “a perspective rarely centered in film.”

If the Britpop movement of the 1990s was defined by its brash celebration of authenticity, anti-commercialism, and, well, Britishness, the hyperpop movement of the 2010s was almost the total inverse. Characterized by heavy audio manipulation, cartoonishly catchy pop hooks, and gleefully artificial alter egos, the music released on A.G. Cook’s PC Music label openly embraced synthetic sounds and consumerist aesthetics. The title of Cook’s third album, Britpop, places these two movements in conversation with one another.
All music exists as a response to something that came before. Case in point: Britpop developed in the wake of the U.S. grunge explosion, which itself was a reaction to the extravagance of hair metal. That sort of push and pull is something that Cook has played with before—most notably on his 2020 cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’s “Crimson and Clover,” which Cook reimagined with massive saw synths and fuzzed-out guitars.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar are two of the most popular and commended rappers in the music industry, and yet, they are also two of the most controversial ones. Thanks to their long-ongoing feud and rocky relationship that just doesn’t seem to want to repair at any cost, the two have been under the spotlight every now and then through their diss tracks for each other.

This is because, in his recently released Family Matters, the 37 year-old singer seemingly implied that his rival and 36 year-old American rapper cum songwriter’s fiancée Whitney Alford allegedly had an affair with Lamar’s manager and creative partner, Dave Free.

Updated with entertainment comments: Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a shoutout to upcoming Wolfs set for theatrical release this fall, Sony distributing. Comedy series Palm Royale with Kristen Wiig and Laura Dern, and Colin Farrell-starring detective skein Sugar also got a plug. Apple’s entertainment business, Apple Studios and Apple TV+ are buried in the Services division but it’s the only one Cook routinely comments on during Apple’s post-earnings conference calls, like today’s.
He keeps a running tally each quarter of Apple TV+ award nominations and wins (480) for Apple TV+ productions since the service launched. “We have some incredible theatrical releases coming this year, including Wolfs, which reunites George Clooney and Brad Pitt,” he said.
Services grew 14% in the current June quarter and CFO Luca Maestri see a similar bump in the current June quarter.

How does a fight between a group of teenagers result in murder?
Hulu’s new true-crime series “Under the Bridge,” based on the late Rebecca Godfrey’s non-fiction book, portrays the before and after of 14-year-old Reena Virk’s brutal murder. The first two episodes, released on April 17, show the timeline of events leading up to Virk’s death and the investigation that took place.
The show, created by Quinn Shephard, tells the story of the events that unfolded through the lens of Godfrey (Riley Keough), a journalist who grew up in Victoria and was working on a novel about teenage girls in her hometown when she found out about the murder, and Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone), a local police officer who investigated and solved the case.
Godfrey told Interview Magazine in 2019 how she became involved in the show. “I was living in New York City. This would’ve been in the late 90s,...

When O.J. Simpson died, it left a lot of polarizing feelings around those who knew him. Some mourned and others seemed happy to see him gone. However, one family felt nothing for his passing but is still angry that he didn’t follow through with a court order against him. Ron Goldman’s family said that Simpson never paid the judgment ruled against him.
Here is what the family said after Simpson’s death and what they plan to do to get the money.

However, Ron Goldman’s family brought a civil suit against O.J. and had other evidence the criminal court didn’t allow. As a result,...

O.J. Simpson paid the family of Ron Goldman just a small fraction of the $33.5 million wrongful death judgment he owed them at the time of his death, an attorney for the Goldman family revealed Friday.
In 1997, after Simpson was acquitted in the murders of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Goldman, a jury in a civil trial found him responsible for their deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million, which — with interest over the past 27 years — has ballooned to over $100 million.
Of that judgment, Simpson paid only $133,000, Goldman family attorney David Cook told People.

In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

It’s the Rani. It’s always the Rani. Even when it definitely isn’t the Rani, well, it’s secretly the Rani.
That’s the running gag in the Doctor Who fandom every time it’s called upon to speculate about who or whatever is behind Something Mysterious and Evil happening on the show. If it’s not the Master, then it’s malevolent Time Lady the Rani. Monsters stealing time, cracks in the universe, milk going off even when kept in an adequately refrigerated container? It’s naughty scientist the Rani (even though it very rarely is).
As played by Kate O’Mara in season 22 and season 24, the character is a classic but little-seen Who villain whose reappearance on TV fans live both in eager anticipation and utter dread of. Four-part 1987 story “Time and the Rani” you see, is not popular.

When Katie Crutchfield finished making Tigers Blood, her sixth album as Waxahatchee, she was struck by a strange, new sensation: It was done, and it was good.
“In the past, I’ve anxiously listened to my records before they come out a lot, searching for mistakes — and then of course finding them because I’m searching for them,” she says with a laugh. This time, she adds, “Every word is in the correct place. Every melody is just right. There’s no question marks. There’s no need to obsess over every little detail.

In September 2019, after years of moves signaling that it was getting serious about Hollywood ambitions, Apple unveiled its foray into entertainment through a subscription video service. A month later, it officially launched its own internal studio, which would feed exclusive content to Apple TV+. The service was offered at an industry-low $5 per month, with some people not having to pay anything as the company gave away a year of TV+ for free to anyone who bought an Apple device.
At the time, observers and analysts across Hollywood likened the strategy to that of Amazon’s Prime Video, which was used to entice consumers to subscribe to Prime. The message was clear: It’s not about the movies or TV shows the tech giants produce; it’s about boosting their core offerings, which in the case of Apple is the iPhone.

A. G. Cook began 2024 by releasing a single, “Silver Needle Golden Thread,” followed by the announcement of his third studio album, Britpop. Now, the PC Music founder is back with the album’s title track, “Britpop,” featuring Charli Xcx.
Opening with Charli delivering the refrain “Brit/ Brit like Britpop,” the track evolves in typical Cook fashion, introducing layers of shimmery, bubbling synths which eventually blossom into a full-fledged dance arrangement. Around the midway point, Charli’s vocals drop out and an intricate bass groove takes their place. For the outro, the refrain returns as a distorted echo, roaring over the beat like the whistle of an approaching train. Stream the track below.
Britpop as a whole is due on May 10th via New Alias, arriving as a 24-song project encompassing three different chapters: Past, Present, and Future. Inspired by the time he spent in the Montana hometown of his girlfriend,...

The tech giant Apple is seeking a bigger piece of the live sports market, leaning into the iPhone’s status as the primary second screen to launch a new app dedicated to real-time sports data.
Called Apple Sports, the free app launches today in the U.S., U.K. and Canada and is focused on live scores, as well as other data around the games. Notably, that also includes real-time betting odds, though users will be able to turn those off at any time.
At launch Apple Sports will have scores and stats from the NBA, NHL, Mls, NCAA basketball, Premier League, Laliga, Serie A, Bundesliga and LigaMX, though the company notes that other leagues will be up and running by the time their seasons begin, including MLB, the NFL as well as NCAA football.
Users will be able to select their favorite leagues and teams for a more personalized experience.

Criminal Minds star Paget Brewster was looking like a mainstay on the series before her departure in season seven. The actor once set the record straight on the real reason she left the series.
How Paget Brewster came back to ‘Criminal’ Minds’ Paget Brewster | Neil Jacobs/Getty Images
At the time, many were surprised by Brewster’s exit from Criminal Minds. She was brought on board the team during the show’s second season as agent Emily Prentiss. Brewster seemed poised to become as much of a constant presence on the show as Shemar Moore and some of the other co-stars. But she, along with her Criminal Minds co-star A.J. Cook, were let go from the show.
Speaking with Assignment X, Brewster confided that those behind the series simply wanted to shake up the show. They felt reducing Brewster’s role would’ve added some spontaneity, which Brewster felt was a mistake.

Ahead of his return as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart stopped by “CBS Mornings” to explain why it was finally time to return to his old job. Stewart hosted the network’s flagship news show from 1999 to 2015. He’ll now be hosting only Monday episodes throughout the 2024 election cycle. Stewart said he needed a platform to speak about the upcoming election, which he no longer had after Apple canceled his talk show last year.
“I wanted a place to unload thoughts as we get into this election season,” Stewart said. “I thought I was going to do it over at — they call it Apple TV+. It’s a television enclave, very small. It’s like living in Malibu. But they decided … they felt that they didn’t want me to say things that might get me in trouble.”
Variety has reached out to Apple for comment.

Tim Cook wanted to know more about the stats.
The Apple CEO was huddled over an iMac in the NBA’s league headquarters in New York alongside NBA commissioner Adam Silver, flanked by a wall of regulation basketballs. On the white table in front of them was the computer, and a piece of hardware that Cook says “really changes everything.”

The NBA had been hard at work on a dedicated app for the device, and two of its developers, senior software engineers Lauren Marshall and Matthew Parrott, were walking Cook and Silver through its features, like the ability to watch up to five games at once, the possibilities of immersive video, and, as Cook inquired about, real-time stats that can be displayed next to the live games.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and TV host Michael Strahan is among the many people mourning and recognizing actor Carl Weathers upon recent news of his passing.
The 76-year-old actor appeared in many roles, including Apollo Creed in the Rocky films and Greef Karga in Disney+’s Star Wars series, The Mandalorian.
On Friday, media outlets reported Carl Weathers’ death, and many individuals reacted with their thoughts about how he impacted their lives.
Like Strahan, Weathers has a football background. He played for San Diego State in college and briefly for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL before joining Canada’s BC Lions for several years in the early 1970s.

"Star Trek" has always loved a deep-cut starship name. In the original series, the U.S.S. Farragut borrowed a name from a Civil War-era Union Navy officer. In "Star Trek: Lower Decks," every California Class ship is named after a different city in the West Coast state, from Redding to Riverside. Figures ranging from Ursula K. Le Guin to Thomas Edison to Elmer Fudd have all gotten the starship name treatment, but one of the earliest named starships in the series had a much less admirable origin story.
The S.S. Botany Bay made its first appearance in the "Star Trek: The Original Series" episode "Space Seed," which introduced viewers to the infamous villain Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). Viewers with a keen sense of geography may have realized they were due to meet a baddie before Khan ever appeared, though, because Botany Bay holds a uniquely horrifying place in history.

Apple Services, the division that includes Apple TV+ as well as Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Arcade, Apple Books, Podcasts, Fitness, the App store, Apple One and other things Apple, saw record revenue last quarter of $23 billion, up 11%, with paid subscriptions continuing to grow in the “strong double digits” and now “well over” one billion, said CFO Luca Maestri.
That’s more than double the number four years ago, he said on a call after quarterly earnings, joining CEO Tim Cook.
Apple Services already had a million subscriptions last year, and doesn’t break out the individual service businesses. But Cook waxed enthusiastic about video in particular, especially Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which has just boosted Apple’s Oscar nomination tally.

In Love on the Spectrum US, singles on the autism spectrum go on dates, try new experiences and (possibly!) fall in love. But many are not alone in this endeavor: Autism expert and author Jennifer Cook guides them along this journey, giving advice on everything from choosing conversation topics to asking for a second date.
But dating and relationships don’t necessarily come easily to Cook, who is on the spectrum herself; in fact, she first began writing books on the topic when she got diagnosed, as she realized there were hidden, unspoken social rules that she wasn’t taught growing up.

In early January, comedian Katt Williams went on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast and took aim at Cedric the Entertainer for stealing “my very best joke.” The bit in question — which involved a pantomime of driving with music blasting — was first performed by Katt in a 1998 appearance on ComicView, then reproduced by Cedric (according to Katt) for his set in Spike Lee’s The Original Kings of Comedy. Cedric called the accusations “revisionist history” on Instagram.

Apple kicked off 2023 by unveiling that CEO Tim Cook had requested a pay cut following a drop in shareholder support for his compensation package. Then, on Dec. 8, Netflix disclosed changes to the streaming giant’s executive pay structure. The overhaul was seen as a reaction to a June vote — during the Writers Guild of America strike — when its shareholders symbolically rejected compensation packages for top execs.
Are other publicly-traded Hollywood giants up next to update their compensation policies in 2024?
Apple and Netflix could simply be seen as special cases, but critics on Wall Street and beyond have in the past urged companies to focus on shareholder friendliness. Are other publicly-traded Hollywood giants up next to update their compensation policies in 2024?
Apple and Netflix could simply be seen as special cases, but critics on Wall Street and beyond have in the past urged companies to focus on shareholder friendliness. In November, AMC Theatres shareholders voted against the compensation packages proposed for its executive officers, including CEO Adam Aron, who was paid $23.7 million in 2022.

Neel Nanda, a stand-up comedian of Indian descent, who appeared on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ and ‘Comedy Central’s Adam Devine’s House Party’, has died at the age of 32. “I (am) deeply shocked and saddened by this,” Nanda’s manager Greg Weiss said in a December 24 statement to Deadline.
“He was a wonderful comic, but a better person. He had the world in front of him.”
A cause of death has yet to be shared publicly.
As news of Nanda’s passing emerged, many fans, friends and fellow stars took to social media to pay tribute.
“Rip Neel Nanda,” Matt Rife wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Playing as the Family in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre arguably entails a steeper learning curve than playing as the Victims. Many will argue that matches are tipped in favor of the Family, and that they’re given more tools to wreak havoc on the Victims than Victims have to escape. However, it takes time, trial and error, and team synergy to best utilize those tools–otherwise, Victims will literally run circles around you as they escape. As such, here are the best tips that I can impart after my many successes (and failures) while playing as the Family.
Your Top Priority Should Always Be to Protect Objectives and Secure the Property
I know you may be thinking–my top priority should be to kill the Victims! But ultimately, the one thing that will prevent you from getting the Victims is an escape route opening up. The moment that a fuse-box is opened,...

“How many of you remember Asl Barbie?” Deaf West Theatre artistic director DJ Kurs signed from the stage at Westwood’s Regency Village Theatre last Thursday night, referring to Sign Language Barbie, which Mattel released in 2000. “Her hand was permanently stuck in the ‘I love you’ hand shape. Can you imagine how awkward that would be in real life? Like if she waved to the Ups driver, she would be like, ‘I love you?’”
The audience giggled as Kurs continued. “But seriously, that was a landmark moment back in those days. Barbie, using sign language, was in every store 20 years ago,” he said. “And tonight we celebrate a similar landmark: Children all across the country will be able to tune into the Asl version of Barbie the movie.”

How many millions of records have you sold? If you're Jessica Simpson, that number is well over 20 million. If you're not Jessica Simpson — and you're not, like, Elton John or one of those guys from Aerosmith — that number is probably a heck of a lot less. At the turn of the century, thanks to hit singles like "I Wanna Love You Forever" and her reality TV series "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica," Jessica Simpson was one of the most famous human beings in the entire world. And she's still really darned famous.
And like most singers who break into the popular zeitgeist, Simpson has also tried her hand at acting. She's probably best known on the big screen for playing the role of Daisy Duke in the 2005 "Dukes of Hazzard" movie, or at least for her cover of "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" from the soundtrack. She also did a...
