The Big Day Out Festival recently kicked off its five city tour in Australia, bringing bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, and Animal Collective to Sydney, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth. If you didn't already love the giant music event for its indie music support, then be prepared to hop on board the Bdo train. Why? Because the festival is keeping the time-honored tradition of crowd surfing alive.

As you can see, Sleigh Bells' singer Alexis Krauss was the one to brave the Australian crowds, a caption-worthy photo that stands out in this week's Instagigs collection. Among the other amazing images shared with us by our favorite music-meets-art, crowd-sourcing organization are snapshots of Solange in the Netherlands, Christopher Owens (formerly of Girls) in Toronto, and Andrew Bird in Los Angeles.

This week, Arnold Schwarzenegger made an action-packed return to the big screen with his newest film "The Last Stand."
Directed by Kim Ji-Woon, critics were surprisingly kind to "The Last Stand," noting that it delivered with expected destruction, car chases and fights. For some critics, though, the story was lacking when it came to the performance of its lead actor.
The horror film "Mama" also fell short of its thriller goals, leaving most viewers perplexed by its laughable storyline. "Broken City," meanwhile, completely wasted the talents of its all-star cast, leading to a film that lacked substance and any attention-worthy moments.
In music, hip-hop newcomer A$AP Rocky released his album "Long.Live.A$AP." It was lyrically solid but it was his delivery that seemed to push the project off track. Free Energy released a largely forgettable album "Love Sign" and Christopher Owens' "Lysandre" was marked as passable,...

We were epically devastated to hear the news earlier this year that San Francisco's own Christopher Owens, the beloved, brooding frontman of indie rock duo Girls, had left his band to pursue other projects.
Enter the silver lining!
Owens announced on Thursday that he plans to release a solo album in January. The record, titled Lysandre, pays homage to his recent life on tour, largely inspired by a woman he met.
(Scroll Down To Hear The First Single)
Fans throughout the blogosphere eagerly took in the album's first single, "Here We Go," which was posted on Soundcloud along with the melodic, 37-second "Lysandre's Theme." (Nice addition of the Renn-Fest flute, Chrissy.)
Owens explained his inspiration behind Lysandre, which was produced by Girls alum Doug Boehm, in a statement:
Lysandre could easily be mistaken as an album about a love affair and the girl I fell in love with. But it’s much more then that.

Even with the Fourth of July putting everyone in hotdog-filled good spirits, this week started on a sad note as beloved actor Andy Griffith died from a heart attack at 86. Kanye West also snagged headlines everywhere when he premiered “New God Glow” at the B.E.T. awards, a song off his upcoming album. Indie music lovers were also plagued with a few unfortunate lineup changes as Girls lost frontman Christopher Owens, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s bassist and guitarist announced their last show. Amy Winehouse‘s estate (by way of her father) revealed that there’s still enough material for one...

It's a sad, sad day for the San Francisco music scene.
Girls frontman Christopher Owens, who has entertained us for five years with his brooding ballads and catchy pop-rock tunes, announced this morning via Twitter that he is leaving the band.
His statement, tweeted in three parts, read in full:
Dear all, This may come as a surprise to many & has been an issue of much thought for me. My decision was not easy to make. I am leaving Girls. My reasons at this time are personal. I need to do this in order to progress. I will continue to write & record music. More will be announced soon. I thank you all for everything. Sincerely-Christopher
Owens and his counterpart, Chet "Jr" White, have produced two full-length albums together to wide acclaim: 2009's breakout Album and last year's Father, Son, Holy Ghost (which HuffPost Sf deemed one of the top five...

Christopher Owens, the main songwriter and vocalist of the group Girls, has suddenly quit the band. Owens announced via Twitter today that his reasons are personal, but that he needs to leave “in order to progress.” He does say he will continue to write and record music. It’s as yet unclear as to whether Jr White, the bassist and producer in the group, will attempt to keep band business going under the Girls name. Girls’ latest record, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, was released in 2011 and made a lot of critics’ best-of lists at the end of the year.

Who: Christopher Owens, lead singer of Girls, the hottest pop-rock band to come out of the Bay since Green Day (we said it!).
Years in San Francisco: Seven.
Neighborhood: Upper Haight.
Current Gig: After spending years partying among San Francisco's Mission District garage-rock elite (think the likes of Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall), Owens decided to take a stab at producing his own stuff -- and we couldn't be happier he did. Since forming Girls with pal Chet "Jr" White in 2008, the duo has exploded onto the international music scene with moody, catchy tracks perfectly composed for college radio stations everywhere. HuffPost Sf named last year's Father, Son, Holy Ghost, the sequel to 2009's critically-acclaimed Album, one of the top five Bay Area records of 2011.
We managed to catch Owens post-Coachella and pre-summer festival circuit to hear the story of how he came to be in the big city.

Lena Dunham's "Girls" returns Sunday for its second episode, which is hard to believe given the amount of media coverage and musings about realism, feminism, race and likability already generated by the show. Heading into that installment, which is sure to automatically infuriate plenty by delving into the topic of abortion, here's a rundown of some of the things already upsetting people about the season's most divisive series about four young women doing nothing that out of the ordinary. The Show's Name: Christopher Owens, the frontman of the indie rock band Girls, has taken to Twitter to express annoyance that the show shares the same name as his group (a word also commonly used to refer to a not insignificant portion of the female population). As Hitfix reports, Owens tweeted that "It's a bit sucky to be informed by a giant company like HBO that you don't matter enough...

"It's a bit sucky to be informed by a giant company like HBO that you don't matter enough culturally to not have your name taken away or used," Girls frontman Christopher Owens tweeted recently. Owens is talking, of course, about "Girls", the buzzed-about TV brainchild of Apatow-approved indie darling Lena Dunham that premiered on the premium network earlier this week. Of course, when you name your band after half the human population you're kind of asking for this sort of thing. "Do you think that TV show even thought twice before using our bands name for their show?" read another tweet....
