Quick! What did you have for lunch on the second Tuesday of January 2012? If the best you can come up with is “urrmm, a sandwich?” or “something I reheated in a Tupperware dish, maybe with sauce?”, chances are that in a few weeks’ time, you’ll be having similar recall problems regarding American Idol‘s exceedingly pedestrian Aspen audition episode.
In fact, if I close my eyes and don’t consult my notes, my most vivid memories of the episode include the sight of an unfortunate yellow romper, a snippet of Lady Gaga’s “Government Hooker,” and a reference to turkey genetalia.

Another day, another catchphrase mangled by Randy Jackson. “Bring in the Kraken“? Seriously, dawg?
Then again, perhaps it was just the high altitude and low air pressure of Aspen, Co, that caused the third judge’s snafu (and decision to wear positively atroshe powder-blue shoes).
Whatever the case may be, the fourth audition episode of Idol‘s 11th season brought us a Lady Gaga wannabe (or, perhaps more accurately, a Rachel Zevita knockoff), Scotty McCreery 2.0, a kid who wrote his own audition song, and a promising young woman named Haley. (True confession: It’s going to be a test...

The judges and producers try to make the claim every year, but I think there's a plausible argument to be made that "American Idol" Season 10 had the deepest talent pool in the show's history. Not only did this season have a Top 13 that was embarrassment-free -- Ashthon Jones and Thia Megia were, at worst, occasionally worthy mediocrities -- but a slightly erratic cut-down from the Top 24 cost us plausible hopefuls like Lauren Turner, Robbie Rosen and Kendra Chantelle, plus early candidates like Jordan Dorsey, Rachel Zevita and Julie Zorrilla, who looked liked contenders during the audition episodes,...

The first high-profile casualty of the 10th season of "American Idol" came down on Thursday night (March 10), as Ashton Jones hit the exit after collecting the least amount of votes from the public (who notched 30 million votes this week). Karen Rodriguez and Haley Reinhart both joined Jones in the bottom three, but in the end it was Jones who had to walk away. Since the show has decided to bring back the judges' save (which allows Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler to rescue a singer if they think America voted incorrectly), Jones was given one last shot to save herself in the "sing for your life" segment. However, she could not make a convincing case for salvation.

"Idol Party Live" took a trip to the Jersey Shore on Thursday (March 10), when Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancola stopped by to chat with MTV News "American Idol" expert Jim Cantiello.
Who knew Sammi was a closet "Idol" fan? "I think I just really like watching it this time around because there's so many amazing singers," she said. "Everyone's unique in their own way and brings their own flair to the show."
We had to find out who the reality-tv star is rooting for this season, and she had to praise her #1 guy: Casey Abrams.

The songs have been selected. The cheap leftover prom dresses? Chosen. The new director has pre-loaded all of his favorite wilderness graphics. This is "American Idol X: When Teenage Girls Find Out They're Not God's Gift To Music."
The theme for Wednesday night's (March 9) Top 13 show: "Personal Idols." They included a man who was tried (and acquitted) for peeing on a 13-year-old, a famous adulterer and a dude who once uploaded eight free albums from kooky alter egos with song titles as varied as "Get Scared, Throw Up, Die," "Drunk as a Pile of F---" and "Passed Out In AA – F---." Perhaps producers should have added the word "musical" in the theme's title, because I seriously doubt Thia Megia's manufacturers programmed her to adopt a chimp and hang out with Webster.

After a long week full of great performances, legendarily bad missteps and seemingly hours of filler, "American Idol" finally revealed the pool of finalists during Thursday night's (March 3) two-hour broadcast. Host Ryan Seacrest teased out the selections all night, and in the end the voters had selected 10 singers (five men and five women) to move on to the next round (which kicks off with the first of the season's live performance shows next Wednesday, March 9).
On the male side, America gave the nod to Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery, Casey Abrams, James Durbin and Paul McDonald — the same five singers who finished in the top five spots in the MTV Newsroom poll conducted earlier this week. The last male spot was handed to Stefano Langone, who was given the only male wild card and who finished sixth in the aforementioned blog poll. American Idol results show is kind of like a trip to the dentist’s chair: The faster you get through it, the better. But Thursday night’s two-hour extravaganza — in which the crop of 24 season 10 semifinalists was dramatically culled to a field of 13 — proved the exception to the rule. Okay, sure, that brief clip of Ta-Tynisa Wilson’s “Only Girl (In the World)” felt like the haunting touch of a dentist’s drill without the benefit of novocaine. But on the whole, the two hours zoomed right past, fueled by a laughing-gas giddiness that this year’s finalists, as a whole,...

The semi-finals only lasted one round, so here we are gang. The finalists of "American Idol." Let's jump right in, shall we?

Tonight, Randy is the Thing That Ate Michael Jackson, Steven Tyler is mariachi on top, Poison on the bottom and J.Lo is a college girl dressing as a slutty dragon for Halloween.
The Idols are introduced and here are some highlights: Casey Abrams does a politician's thumbs up that I'm sure he thinks he is doing ironically; Haley Reinhart and Kendra Chantelle have their pageant waves to go with their pageant hair; Thia Megia looks like a Cosby kid; Brett Loewenstern has his hair a little more wild and a little less Vidal Sassoon (which is a good thing); Paul McDonald has on his floral suit jacket again,...

Tonight, Ryan Seacrest will announce who is going on to the Top 12. Here are our picks. And ahead, we have a special Gif to remember those who hopefully won’t make it through… Our Top 12 Dream Team: Ashthon Jones – Not our favorite but adorable and peppy. Robbie Rosen – Anyone who looks like one of the Sweathogs from Welcome Back Kotter gets an automatic pass in our book. Paul McDonald – Loved him in the bookshop in Notting Hill, still love him. Pia Toscano – Kinda boring and bland but pretty and bland. Brett Loewenstern – I would never deny myself the second-hand embarrassment that Bretty delivers in spades because I enjoy aural torture. (That sounds exactly as nasty as it should sound.) Thia Megia – Wasn’t really a fan...

As the Top 10, based on viewer votes, is revealed, we'll see how much of an effect the introduction of online voting will have. Is anyone else hoping for an upset, just for the excitement of it all? This week, we had a lot of Idol. First, the Top 12 Boys performed for your votes, and they were mostly great. I predict that we may see Jordan Dorsey, Jovany Barreto and Tim Halperin go home, although I could see Tim Halperin picking up a Wild Card slot.
Then, the Top 12 Girls performed, and, like the guys, there were several standouts despite a slew of questionable song choices. I predict we'll see Ta-Tynisa Wilson and Rachel Zevita go for sure, with Julie Zorrilla for the possible upset or Wild Card spot. With the online voting and unlimited phone/text voting, it really could be anyone's game.

On Wednesday morning, following the top 12 men's debut on "American Idol," MTV News sized up the competition with our first report card of the season. We doled out high marks to Paul McDonald and Casey Abrams, and delivered some tough love in the form of failing grades to Robbie Rosen and Jordan Dorsey.
Now it's the top 12 women's turn to soar or suffer. When the ladies took the stage on Wednesday night, they busted out praiseworthy tuneage and showed off vocal chops that aren't quite ready for the big time. Who's up, who's down, who might be out by next week? It's report card time!
Excellent
Pia Toscano: She alone lands in this category because she alone blew us away with the iron-man strength of her vocals.

This is going to be hard. I honestly can say that ten of these girls could really have a shot at getting voted in. There was an interesting variety of song choices, and overall another great night of music. I'm sort of sad that I won't get to see more of some of these girls, but overall I think there are a variety of ways this could go without making me unhappy.
I'll go again in the order they sang.
Tatynisa Wilson: "Only Girl in the World" This is a shouty song to begin with, and Tatynisa did little to change that. It was pitchy, even if sung with convinction. Once again Randy was the voice of reason, pointing out the flaws of the performance (in a constructive way no less.) Verdict: out.

Last night on American Idol, the Top 12 girls took the big stage to perform live for the very first time this season!
First to sing was Ta-Tynisa Wilson with her rendition of “Only Girl” by Rihanna. Ta-Tynisa had a great presentation but was very pitchy, as Judge, Randy Jackson pointed out. Randy also predicted that he will be hearing things differently than the other judges a lot throughout the season. This makes sense considering he is the only producer on the panel. One of the producer’s jobs in the studio is to catch when artists are pitchy, so he definitely has the best ears on the panel. Since Ta-Tynisa’s presentation was good but her voice was not as good, her performance was not solid. If Ta-Tynisa doesn’t change her tune, she won’t last long in this competition.
Second to sing was Naima Adedapo with “Summertime” originally sung by George Gershwin.

The first thing you need to know about this season of American Idol — the very first thing — is that the members of the audience who sit behind the stage of the newly redesigned-to-actually-resemble-a-dome Idoldome are rowdy. They whistle. They catcall. They whoop and cheer when a wannabe diva points at them during her song. They demand Cory the Warm-up Comic trek up to their row so they can shake their moneymaker with enough middle-aged gusto that Jennifer Lopez is forced to smile and point. I’m thinking of calling them the peanut gallery. Smirkelstiltskin my snark demon is thinking of calling them the nosebleeders.

But before all that carnage and celebration, we once again turned to some of our "Idol" experts to make some predictions about this season's front-runners after the top 12 women did their thing on Wednesday night.
Because he just can't get enough of all things "Idol," we turned to MTV News' resident expert Jim Cantiello for his take on which ladies soared and which ones crashed and burned. Despite a few serious stinkers, Jc said he continues to be shocked by the caliber of vocalists on the show this season. "You believe that these were the finest...

It was girls night out on “American Idol” and these gals were all bringing it.
If we’re listening to the judges, one thing is clear: nothing is clear. There was lots of disagreement among them on who was great and who was average.

In the words of the great philosopher Kool: “Oh yes it’s ladies’ night, and the feeling’s right. Oh yes it’s ladies’ night, oh what a night.” Or to put it another way, the top 12 women of American Idol‘s tenth season just brought it to the big stage, and now we’re faced with the tough work of advancing a quintet to the finals, while forcing the other seven to walk the reality TV plank. Somehow it doesn’t seem fair, does it?

After last night's guys, three of which we think are definitely safe, "American Idol" brings us the girls. Let's get right to it, shall we?
Seacrest welcomes us again and the strange voice man introduces the judges. J.Lo has come as a disco ball, Randy has on a Cosby sweater and Steven Tyler is wearing the same thing from last night. He probably just slept backstage and rolled out for "Idol." (Yes, I know this is pre-taped, it's a joke, don't email me).
When the women are introduced, I am struck by just how much Asthton/Tatynisa, Julie/Pia and Haley/Kendra are the same person. Seriously, it's like Doppelgangland up in here. But let's get to the singing.
Here are the Top 12 performances, in our order of best to worst:
Definitely Advancing:
1. Pia Toscano: "I'll Stand By You" by the Pretenders
This is a great song choice for her.

The road to "American Idol" has been an exceptionally long one for New Yorker Rachel Zevita. She's been auditioning for the show since Season 6 -- but will her journey end just shy of the top 12?
The 21-year-old took the stage on the Mar. 2 ladies night, with a cover of Fiona Apple's unrelentingly sexy 1997 hit "Criminal."
Instead of singing it like the original -- or anywhere within a 20-mile radius of it -- she pranced around stage, enthusiastically swinging her hair to an upbeat rendition that seemed a bit too Broadway.
And those are the judges' words, not ours. Steven Tyler, the kindest of the three, was the first to make the theatrical comment. Jennifer Lopez was quick to follow suit.
"This is the first time that America is seeing you," she says. "Do you want them to see you as a Broadway performer or someone who could be a recording artist right now?...

"American Idol's" Top 24 is finally underway and as we've said before, we think it's their most talented group of contestants ever.
The Top 12 girls took the stage on Monday, Feb. 28, in front of an audience of 700 people, which will air tonight, Wednesday, Mar. 2.
Zap2it was at the taping and while we won't tell you any of the judges' comments pertaining to a specific contestant (we don't want to spoil all the fun), but here are a few things to know: Whenever the judges are divided, it's always Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez vs. Randy Jackson. Also, Randy will do a lot of name-dropping, comparing some of the girls to Kelly Clarkson, Amy Winehouse, Florence + the Machine and the late Michael Jackson.
The contestants who got the loudest applause were Lauren Alaina, Karen Rodriguez, Pia Toscano and Thia Megia. One of the ladies scored the season's first standing ovation...

The fellas had their chance on Tuesday night, so on Wednesday (March 2), this year's "American Idol" top 12 women took the stage in an effort to earn their place in the finals.
By night's end, Pia Toscano and Ashthon Jones emerged as the ones to beat, while teens Thia Megia and Lauren Alaina appeared to have also punched their cards into the top 10.
Beyoncé impersonator Ta-Tynisa Wilson, 20, did the honors and went first, singing Rihanna's "Only Girl (In the World)," while wearing a geometric-patterned poodle skirt. Though she looked the part, her thin, squeaky vocals were way off and the band's tinny new wave arrangement did her no favors.
Jennifer Lopez said it started off shaky, but she liked how Wilson played to the crowd and disagreed strongly with Randy Jackson,...

On Tuesday night (March 1), the "American Idol" Top 24 will sing for their lives — guys first, followed by the girls on Wednesday — and it will be up to viewers at home to determine just who moves on.
And though there's still a long way to go until we reach the finals in May, that hasn't stopped some "Idol" hopefuls from already surging to the front of the field ... at least, according to the oddsmakers, that is.
With the Top 24 set to tip off, the folks at Bodog.com have just released their odds for each of the remaining contestants, a list that's topped by early frontrunner (and Steven Tyler favorite) Lauren Alaina,...

Los Angeles — "American Idol" opened the door this season for 15-year-olds to audition but none made it into the semifinals at that tender age.
For round-faced charmer Jacee Badeaux, 15, of Lafayette, La., that means the music stopped Thursday, although he earned a comforting hug from judge Jennifer Lopez.
The 24 contestants who advanced in the singing contest did include two teenagers who were 15 when they auditioned but have since reached sweet 16. Along with a few 17-year-olds, it was mostly singers in their early 20s who got the nod from Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler.
California, New York, Tennessee and Louisiana are the states best represented among the two-dozen semifinalists, who are split evenly between males and females.
They won't have long to savor their achievement. Next week, only about half will make it to the finals after the men perform on Tuesday and the women on Wednesday. The results of...

What Thursday night’s American Idol telecast lacked in suspense, it more than made up for in terms of surprise.
Ryan Seacrest pulled a Gwyneth Paltrow and went all Country Strong on us, but not before getting lifted like a set of Jersey Shore dumbbells by male and female contestants alike. Rachel Zevita opened up a commanding lead in the Season 10 Millinery Race. Call off the search dogs. Lower our security threat level back down to chartreuse. Our long national nightmare of not knowing the full Top 24 on "American Idol X" finally ended Thursday night (February 24), as Seacrest & Co. spent 14 hours reading 19 names. When the dust finally settled and the also-rans were told to mind the gap as they boarded the "Idol" Obscurity Train (Erin Kelly, Tiwan Strong, Brittany Mazur and Jimmie Allen, meet your conductors Vanessa Wolfe, Erskine Walcott and Hadas), "Idol" fans were left with a promising batch of 24 hungry young singers. I can’t remember a season of American Idol when I’ve been more pleased with the Top 24 contestants. Season 10 is going to go down in history as the best year yet!
After more than a month of auditions, the Top 24 contestants of American Idol season 10 were announced Feb. 24. (What a fitting date, right?) Outside of fan favorite Chris Medina, who was sadly cut the night before, there weren’t too many surprises with the big reveal — and honestly, I didn’t mind it one bit!
Thankfully, my three favorite youngsters — big voiced Lauren Alaina, country cutie Scotty McCreery and Charice-esque Thia Megia — all made the cut, so I was pleased as punch. Who else will be competing for our votes to make the Top 12? Here’s your official list:
Naima Adedapo, Haley Reinhart, Clint Jun Gamboa, Paul McDonald, Ashthon Jones, Karen Rodriguez, Robbie Rosen, Julie Zorrilla, Tim Halperin, Scotty McCreery,...

On Thursday night, "American Idol" revealed the remainder of the season 10 Top 24, a collection of singer/songwriters, balladeers, scatters, divas, perky teens and belters that will compete to become the heir to Lee DeWyze's throne (perhaps he's not the best example, but let's move on).
Unlike previous seasons, this year's crop of contenders is long on talent, short on sob stories — Chris Medina's exit made sure of that. And while it's probably too early to say this, we could be looking at the most-gifted field of singers in "Idol" history (or at least since the epochal third season). So it would probably benefit you to get to know the field before the cruel cut-downs begin.

The picking out of semifinalists on American Idol has to be the most agonizing episode to watch. On one hand, I want to see everyone's reaction. On the other, did we really need to take two hours to tell people yes and no?
Every year, it seems the producers try to outdo themselves in making the contestants travel to and from their final judgment. It's gone from a room, to a mansion, and this year is in the nicest looking airplane hangar I've ever seen. (I'm a military brat, so I've seen quite a few.) What's next year going to be? Will the contestants have to take a small boat to a remote island?
This is a fairly straight-forward episode, so I'm going to go down the line, just as Idol did. (Although I promise to try and keep my word count down.)

On Wednesday night, February 23, "American Idol" unveiled the first five semifinalists for season 10's Top 24, and ended with Jennifer Lopez's break-down following the elimination of Chris Medina. The show returned with less drama on Thursday night, February 24 to reveal the remaining 19 semifinalists.
After five minute break for Jennifer to get herself together, the judges were back on their seat to continue delivering good and bad news to the hopefuls waiting to learn about their fates. First to face them was Karen Rodriguez, who was met with a good news. She joins Naimi Adedepo, Ashthon Jones, Clint Jun Gamboa, Paul McDonald and Haley Reinhart in the Top 24.

Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez have selected the remaining 19 contestants who proceed to the Top 24 round of "American Idol". As expected, top runner Casey Abrams, is admitted into the group along with other favorites such as Lauren Alaina, Rachel Zevita, James Durbin and Scotty McCreery.
Meanwhile, walking away from the chance to be an idol were Colton Dixon and 15-year old Jacee Badeaux whose spot was given to curly-haired Brett Loewenstern. John Wayne Schulz was pitted against fellow country boy, McCreery, and he lost. Others saying goodbye were Tiwan Strong, Eryn Kelly, Jackie Wilson and Jessica Cunningham.
As for the Top 24, they would have to prepare themselves to impress the audience at home with their pipes. Starting next week, "Idol" will go live three nights in a row and the audience voting begins. The guys will perform first on Tuesday, followed by the girls on Wednesday and the finalists announcement on Thursday.
