At the end of “Balcony Man,” Nick Cave’s ponderous and playful song about hope, romance, and grief, he sings, “What doesn’t kill you just makes you crazier.” The words are a wry twist on Friedrich Nietzsche’s famous aphorism — but Cave says they’re also an improvement upon it.
“I don’t think Nietzsche’s quote of ‘What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ is remotely true,” he says. “It is bad, unhelpful information that suggests we are somehow weak if we succumb to our griefs. It lacks compassion.

A great lyricist might remind you of your favorite literary icon, and some lyricists might take that association as an outstanding compliment. But don’t go around telling Nick Cave he’s anything like Charles Bukowski, the former indicated in a recent blog post, emphasizing that he’s not a fan of the controversial author.
The exchange went down via a recent post on Cave’s website The Red Hand Files, after a fan named Simon wrote to him: “In my opinion you are one of the bonzerist geezers around, like Bukowski with a geetar. Thank you Mr. Cave.”
Cave had this to say in response: “Thank you for your letters but, I’m sorry, Simon, I don’t like being compared to Charles Bukowski. I appreciate you were trying to be kind and make me feel good and everything but I don’t like the man. This a well known fact.

Nick Cave has said that he lost his “rage, anger, and hatred” after the death of his son.
While responding to a fan’s note in his Red Hand Files newsletter, the 65-year-old singer said that “things changed after my first son died”.
The fan’s message read: “When did you become a Hallmark card hippie? Joy, love, peace. Puke! Where’s the rage, anger, hatred?
“Reading these lately is like listening to an old preacher drone on and on at Sunday mass.”
Cave replied to the note, saying: “ I changed. For better or for worse, the rage you speak of lost its allure and, yes, perhaps I became a Hallmark card hippie. Hatred stopped being interesting. Those feelings were like old dead skins that I shed. They were their own kind of puke.
“Sitting around in my own mess, pissed off at the world, disdainful of the people in it,...
