No cinematic topic in the last few years has instigated as much -- or as intense -- debate as 3D. The jury is still out on how it bridges the art and science of motion pictures, or whether it does so at all. In its own way, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is trying to settle the debate, or at least advance it. Academy member Robert Neuman conducted a Masterclass titled "Getting Perspective: The Art and Science of 3D" at the 15th Mumbai Film Festival. Neuman heads the Stereoscopic Division at Walt Disney Animation, one studio that has gone full force into the third dimension (their last non-3D theatrical release was four years ago with "The Princess and the Frog.") This Masterclass was compiled with the help of the Science and Technology Council at AMPAS, and will travel to other festivals and exhibitions soon. Here...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

After an astonishingly successful 3D rerelease at the cinema, The Lion King finally comes to Blu-Ray in the UK today.
Not only can you now watch the film at home in gloriously high definition, but you can also do so in 3D. A few weeks ago we published our interviews with Don Hahn, the producer of the film. We also spoke with Robert Neuman, Disney’s stereoscopic supervisor who has been responsible, not only for the conversion on The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, but worked on Bolt and Tangled as well.
At the time of the interview, the conversion on The Little Mermaid hadn’t been announced (it may not have even been decided – we spoke to him back in early September), but our conversation should give you some idea of why it will take the company two years to complete it, while they can do two...

Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, the directors of The Lion King, discuss the classic Disney film.
The Movie Pool recently sat in on a Q&A session with Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers, the directors of Disney's The Lion King, as they reflect on the film, the 3D re-release, and the upcoming Blu-ray release. Following is a transcript of the entire Q&A.
Q - What is your opinion about Broadway Musical The Lion King directed by Julie Taymor?
A - Rob Minkoff: When I first heard that a musical was being contemplated for The Lion King I was concerned it would attempt to be too literal. Beauty & The Beast had already made the leap to the stage and it was very much a replica of the animated movie. I didn't think that kind of approach would work for The Lion King. When Julie Taymor was brought on board...

The Lion King returns to movie theaters in 3D, and with the onslaught of 3D movies, the Stereoscopic Supervisor on The Lion King 3D reveals the best seats in the house for maximizing your 3D movie-going experience.
As a Stereoscopic Supervisor for the Walt Disney Animation Studios (Tangled, Bolt), Robert Neuman takes two-dimensional images from artists drawings and transforms them into three dimensions using a depth map or "3D script" much like he did for the 3D conversion of The Lion King. Once he finished "choreographing" the 1,197 individual scenes in The Lion King, he gave the depth map to a team of four Sequence Supervisors and sixty 3D artists, who completed the process in four months.

How do you take a hand-drawn animated Disney classic like The Lion King and turn it into a 3D masterpiece? With the theatrical release on September 16th and on Disney Blu-ray, Hi-Def and Blu-ray 3D on October 4th, Disney Stereographer Robert Neuman provides some insight on what a stereographer does (responsible for all 3D aspects of cinematography on the film) & the process involved and for some insight on why Disney chose to convert The Lion King to 3D.
How long has 3D cinema been around?

Collider has a neat break-down of how the 3D post-conversion works on Disney’s upcoming The Lion King 3D, with some words from Robert Neuman, who worked on the conversion. The Lion King is one of the classics of all cinema, not just animation, and this look at the break-down, impresses.
“It took four months to complete the conversion. It was extremely challenging and a very busy four months, but we got there in the end. We couldn’t be more proud of the outcome,” says Neuman.
“A team of 60 artists worked on the project, alongside four Sequence Supervisors and myself, the Stereoscopic Supervisor. We divided the artists up into teams that would take on one sequence at a time. That way, we were able to ensure there was 3D continuity within that sequence.”
