Previously: Harlots Season 1 Review
by Nathaniel R
Jessica Brown Findlay, the jewel of "Harlots"
Season 2 kicked off with two disruptive episodes back-to-back, throwing previous power hierarchies into disarray. A relentless new Justice throws the once powerful Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) into prison which sets off several plotlines including a new brothel run by Quigley's son Charles (Dougie McMeeken) and Emily Wells (Holli Dempsey). The show is moving with such speed that it's difficult to keep up with these working women. But we shall try since we want everyone watching this show to ensure a third season! The actressing is even more involving the second time around with new cast members, new alliances, and the masterstroke of adding the undersung Liv Tyler to the cast.
A quick review of the first two episodes before the fourth hits tonight so we'll have to have another post soon on episodes 3 and 4. It's so...

The longlist for the Best Song category in the Oscars has been announced – so what should make the cut?
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the longlist of songs for its Best Original Song Oscar in 2014, ahead of the nominations for the shortlist on January 14.
The list features 75 songs written for movies over the last year, with artists including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Coldplay, Kings Of Leon, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and M83 all making the grade. Pharrell is included for his hit Happy, currently in the top 5 of the UK charts, which appears in Despicable Me 2, and other animated films make up a large proportion of those selected: Epic, Turbo, The Croods, Planes, Escape From Planet Earth and Monsters University all also get a mention.
The Great Gatsby, with its bold and incongruous soundtrack of modern musicians, gets five mentions for songs by Jay Z,...

Stoker has been the subject of much heated discussion around these parts with some DC staffers proclaiming that it's the most amazing thing since sliced bread while others, namely me, think it is a well made but pretentious little movie that was ultimately kind of dull. Now you can decide for yourself!

After giving you early Blu-ray/DVD release details in April, we now have official details from Fox and a look at the cover art for Park Chan-wook’s Stoker:
“India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) was not prepared to lose her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic auto accident. The solitude of her woodsy family estate, the peace of her tranquil town, and the unspoken somberness of her home life are suddenly upended by not only this mysterious accident, but by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India thinks the void left by her father’s death is finally being filled by his closet bloodline. Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Yet instead of feeling outrage or horror,...

In his latest Music in Film column, Ivan has a listen to some of the finest soundtracks to appear this year so far...
What do John Carter and Maniac have in common? Unlikely male heroes, wooden supporting cast and spring release dates aside, they both have excellent scores.
In fact, February/March is fast becoming my favourite time of year for unexpected film music treats. 2012 gave us Michael Giacchino’s epic sci-fi score to John Carter, Mark Mothersbaugh’s fun 21 Jump St, the charming Hunky Dory, and Jónsi’s (of Sigur Ros) lovely We Bought A Zoo. Here are some scores that you might not have noticed this year, which are all worth a listen.
Maniac – Rob
Who is the mysterious composer "Rob"? No one really knows. Does he have a wife? Is he a she and is "Rob" actually short for "Roberta"? Perhaps...

The second film of the year to feature a South Korean director making his Western debut, Park Chan-wook’s Stoker has already divided critics and audiences sharply. In a two-part review, Ricky, Edgar and Simon try to earn royalties from the Hitchcock estate by evoking the master of suspense’s name as often as possible. Following that, a brief but wide-ranging discussion on the possible implications of Kickstarter-funded filmmaking.
