Since his 2019 Double Down Tour, Eric Church has upended the traditional country music live show, doing away with opening acts and choosing instead to carry the night himself by delivering three-hour concerts split into two sets. But for this year’s Outsiders Revival Tour, he was inspired by his own playlist to curate a diverse group of legends, buzz artists, and up-and-comers to join him on the road.

After a two-year break because of the pandemic, this year’s Luck Reunion, the daylong gotta-see-it-to-believe-it festival at Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch outside of Austin, was already destined to be special. Fans and artists alike were eager to commune in one of the most magical festival settings in the country. But the death of Bobbie Nelson, Willie’s older sister, last week at age 91 increased the emotional weight.

Since emerging from the Texas outlaw scene in the early Seventies, Ray Wylie Hubbard has written some of the genre’s smartest, funniest — and most overlooked — classics. A favorite of Jerry Jeff Walker and Eric Church, Hubbard explores everything from his wild past to his deep knowledge of Christianity, Buddhism ,and Native American religions. “I read about this stuff and it just kinda shows up,” he told Rolling Stone in 2017. “But I still enjoy being a smartass.”

Hayes Carll releases the Alone Together Sessions on September 4th, a collection of his songs reimagined as stripped-down acoustic numbers. In some cases, the songs stay true to form, but others are drastically different. Like “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart,” which the Texas songwriter premieres Wednesday.
As it appears on Carll’s 2008 album Trouble in Mind, “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart” is a roadhouse rocker, equal parts Sticky Fingers-era Rolling Stones and Georgia Satellites twang. On the Alone Together Sessions, it’s practically a dirge, with haunting harmonies from Allison Moorer.

For nearly two decades, Hayes Carll has been making consistently great singer-songwriter records, influenced by the back-porch songcraft of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. While off the road in Nashville for his longest stretch in years, Carll had the chance to revisit some of his best material — which he reimagines on a new acoustic album, Alone Together Sessions, out September 4th on Dualtone.
“It’s probably good to pause every now and then, to take stock of everything,” Carll said in a statement, talking about returning to his older material in the studio.

“Let’s funk it up,” Eric Church called out near the halfway point of his concert in Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday night, the first of two shows he’ll perform in the city to launch his 2019 Double Down Tour. The band followed his lead, kicking off an especially greasy version of “Hangin’ Around,” a track off Church’s latest album Desperate Man. Eric Church is continuing to roll out songs from his forthcoming sixth LP, Desperate Man, with “Heart Like a Wheel,” a soulful, shuffling ballad that meditates on lifetime love against the odds, delivered to his fan club, the Church Choir, on Thursday night. Now widely available in a lyric video, Church offers up some of the album’s recurring iconography to accompany the track: industrial hangars, cloudy skies and something soaring through the air – this time, a plane, though it’s a bird who pops up on the album’s cover.

The third trailer has been released for Hell or High Water, Starred Up director David Mackenzie‘s familial outlaw tale of revenge and righteousness starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Jeff Bridges. With less than a month away from release, this third trailer, shorter than the previous ones, is a more dialogue-constant approach, filling viewers into the plot instead of the pistolaro stylings of the first two.
We said in our review, “David McKenzie’s Hell or High Water is a gritty, darkly humorous, and fiendishly violent neo-western. Or, in other words, the type of film you might expect from a non-American director working in the United States. I've seen so much music over the years it's often difficult for me to find much that is authentic. I have to get off the beaten track and lurk around the fringes of the music scene. Find those pockets of music where the authentic bubbles and boils. Where artists are making authentic art, for themselves, for their small stake in the world; hoping to get some response back from an audience or a scene, hoping to be noticed, hoping to share their art.
I was talking to painter Ron English at lunch in Austin during SXSW and he reminded me how cities use to stake their claim in creating a music scene with an identifiable sound -- San Francisco in the '60s with the psychedelic bands like the Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, et al.; London's punk/new wave scene in the mid/late '70s with the Sex Pistols,...
