We all love mysteries because they are always intriguing puzzles that force you to use all your wits and deductive reasoning along with the characters to solve gruesome crimes. However, let's be honest, there are an infinite number of movies and TV shows with similar premise, which makes the mystery genre seem rather unremarkable.
However, when the crime story focuses not so much on the crime itself, but on its consequences, human relationships, the psyche of the criminal, the victim and their loved ones, we get a deep psychological drama. Add quality cinematography and a talented cast to the formula and you have a surefire hit.
Such was the case with Broadchurch, starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman. Yes, you can find criticism of the show here and there, but the vast majority of professional critics and audiences remained positive, and now the show boasts an impressive 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa and W1A’s Hugh Skinner will star in a National Theatre revival of Oscar Wilde’s play about courtships, betrothals, and confused identities. The Importance of Being Earnest also stars three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke playing the imperious Lady Bracknell.
Director Max Webster, making his Nt debut, told Deadline exclusively that casting Gatwa and Skinner as the idle bachelors Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing -both leading double lives – who pursue two young women, both determined to marry someone called Ernest, and with Clarke as the dreadnaught dowager decreeing her own rules of class, taste, and propriety, was “a dream come true.”

Back in 2013, David Tennant and the not-yet-a-list Olivia Colman broke our brains with the first season of Broadchurch, a series written with a self-contained first season but which proved so popular it lasted for three years.
The outstanding first season of Broadchurch centers around the death of a young boy in a small, seemingly idyllic community. The sudden and horrible death of 11-year-old Danny sends his town in a tailspin. The investigation is run by the cheerful Detective Miller (Colman) and her equally dour partner, the recently transferred Detective Alec Hardy (Tennant).
Part of what made Broadchurch so interesting is that it wasn't just about the 'whodunnit' of it all. The series was not only interested in solving the crime, but also in examining the impact of Danny's death, the resulting media attention, and the investigation on a tight-knit community.
Now, fans of Broadchurch are discovering another David Tennant must-watch crime drama.

Criminal Record will be viewed as an inquiry into the dark recesses of the human mind and how racial prejudice is so deeply ingrained in some people that they would go to the ends of the earth to justify it and hide their actions even from themselves at points. The characters in this show are so well written that even when there is an episode where the action slows down, it doesn’t bother us much because we are with the characters even in their dry moments, not that there are many. The show’s crux was built by fleshing out the battle between DS June Lenker and Dci Daniel Hegarty. This could be viewed not only as a battle of the sexes but also as a battle of intelligence, as the case Hegarty once ‘solved’ was now being investigated by Lenker as she felt there had been a grave error,...

Criminal Record has such good writing that its twists and turns never feel forced. The two performers, Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo, are really knocking it out of the park. No one is given time to sulk over what is happening to their characters, and they get into action mode pretty quickly. The stakes keep getting higher and higher, and in the fifth episode, Lenker’s son Jacob gets into trouble. It all happens because Lenker approaches Clive, the one who murdered Maria, and finds out that Tony Gilfoyle had connections to a neo-Nazi group. Tony being one of the key members of Hegarty’s group creates a lot of problems, and in the end, it’s Hegarty who is left to deal with the mess.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Record Episode 3 “Kid in the Park.”] How far will Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) go to keep Lenker (Cush Jumbo) from looking too closely in her investigation on Criminal Record? The latest episode very strongly hints at that answer. The Apple TV+ crime thriller follows the two detectives as she digs into a murder case from his past, one that could very well threaten the legacy he’s determined to protect. And while they’re investigating the drive-by shooting of a young boy, she’s not letting the other case go and also visits Errol (Tom Moutchi) in prison; he may or may not have committed the crime for which he was convicted. After Hegarty hears of Lenker being on the warpath, from the surveillance van, he sees the suspect approaching her from behind — and he’s armed. This episodes one and two review contains plot details but is largely spoiler-free.
In eight-part crime thriller Criminal Record, Peter Capaldi’s Dci accuses Cush Jumbo’s DS of unconscious bias. Has she – a woman of colour – automatically believed a tip-off about a West African-British prisoner’s wrongful conviction because she’s primed to see racist conspiracy everywhere? Or is Jumbo’s character simply seeing racist conspiracy because she’s looking right at it?
That mystery is at the centre of this new drama from the makers of ITV’s Vera. Two episodes of writer Paul Rutman’s series are out now on Apple TV+, with the rest to follow weekly on Wednesdays until February 21. Has Jumbo’s DS Lenker stumbled on a corrupt ring of racist cops led by Capaldi’s Dci Dan Hegarty, or is she putting two and two together to make five?
Your take on the ‘Is Hegarty a baddie?...

Criminal Record is one of the better shows streaming on AppleTV+ right now. With great actors such as Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo in this riveting crime drama, Criminal Record impresses in the first two episodes. The premise is set for a thrilling showdown between two cops: Detective Sergeant June Lenker and Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty. One man’s life hangs in the balance, and the racial undertones in the show make for some arresting drama that is laced with powerful social commentary. The show intrigues us by introducing us to the characters, and their link is based on a 2011 murder case that Hegarty and his team handled. DS June Lenker finds probable cause to reopen that case, which may help Errol Mathis, a man serving a minimum of 24 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Adelaide Burrowes.

It is certainly not the case that every lackluster show title reflects a lackluster show. For every tepid Suspicion there’s a zippy Hijack, for every drab Liaison a gorgeous Foundation — and that’s just on Apple TV+. But an uninspired name can feel, in retrospect, like an early warning sign.
So it is with the streamer’s Criminal Record, not to be confused with Criminal Minds or Criminal: UK or Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The thriller has its merits, chief among them Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as a pair of rival cops. But a tendency to prioritize themes over characters, combined with languid pacing and a too-measured tone, ultimately results in too little payoff for the time it demands.
For a while, the basic promise of a twisty murder mystery with prestige-tv gloss is enough to sustain some interest. Jumbo plays June Lenker, a midlevel detective...

The television landscape is replete with forgettable show titles, but few are as bland as Criminal Record. The name reveals nothing about the contents of the Apple TV+ series, beyond indicating that it's a crime drama, or reflects the fact that it's a two-hander between Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi, who play police detectives on opposite sides of a murder investigation. And it certainly doesn't do justice to the thriller's unique willingness to confront police corruption head-on, something that instantly sets Paul Rutman's drama apart from the many shows that prefer to glorify the criminal justice system.

When you’re staging a classic cat-and-mouse game, it helps to have absolute beasts on hand to portray the cagey adversaries. Criminal Record, a British crime drama in the powerful tradition of Line of Duty and Prime Suspect, is blessed to have two of the best circling each other for eight gripping episodes. Cush Jumbo, who’s most familiar to U.S. audiences for her brash performance on The Good Wife, is the underdog: Detective Sergeant June Lenker, only a year-and-a-half on the beat when she goes toe to toe with veteran Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty. This steely pro, played with a grave and cadaverous intensity by former Doctor Who Peter Capaldi, is none too pleased when June digs into a possible miscarriage of justice in a murder case he closed back in 2012. The catalyst: a panicked call to a domestic-abuse hotline from an anonymous woman who says her...

True Detective is back after a five-year layoff, but that’s nothing compared to how long it’s been since Jodie Foster last starred in a TV series.

When Peter Capaldi flickers into view on the Zoom call, I half expect him to tell me to “F** Off!”
For TV viewers of a certain age, the 65-year-old Scottish actor will forever be Malcolm Tucker, the supremely sweary spin doctor in Armando Iannucci’s pre-Veep Brit political satire The Thick of It.
“It’s The Thick of It and Doctor Who,” says a charming (and clean-mouthed) Capaldi, about the roles he’s most recognized for (he played the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the cult sci-fi series from 2013 to 2017). “Surprisingly, The Thick of It is still incredibly popular [the series wrapped in 2012]. People, generally very cool, smart young people, recognize me from that a lot. They generally just ask me to swear at them.”
Of course, there’s a lot more to Capaldi than Tucker and the Doctor. His scores of film and TV appearances include playing alongside Burt Lancaster in Bill Forsyth’s 1983 classic Local Hero,...

It’s detective vs. detective in Apple TV+‘s new crime thriller series. Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo are happy to be working together again — they previously starred in Torchwood in 2009 — in Criminal Record, premiering January 10. “It was so funny because when I remember Cush from Torchwood, she was just this kind of bright light, this kind of youthful teen,” he tells TV Insider. “I wasn’t a teen, but I was pretty young,” she interjects. “I was just terrified. That’s why I was bright. My poor eyeballs were so wide. Which direction should I be walking in?” The two have worked together and seen each other since, and Capaldi makes sure to praise Jumbo’s work as both a playwright and performer, including in Josephine and I, a play about Josephine Baker. But they’d been trying “to find the right thing,” which this is, she shares. “I...

Exclusive: The international boss of ITN Productions (Itnp), the production outfit behind Prince Harry: The Interview, has detailed scripted ambitions including a desire to make a show that breaks free from its factual-led comfort zone.
ITN produces the ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 news in the UK but has built up a mini production powerhouse over the past few years, making hundreds of hours of fast-turnarounds, documentaries, and factual entertainment shows including for major streamers, while broadening its U.S. offering. Itnp has now entered the scripted space, unveiling its debut drama, Cush Jumbo-starring Lifetime movie Girl in the Video, late last week.
Ian Russell, who runs the international operation, described the scripted move as a “natural evolution” for the near-15-year-old production outfit, which feels “incremental and comfortable.”
The plan had been in the offing for a while, building on Itnp’s success in the true crime and royal game.
