This year marks the 50th annual edition of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. To celebrate, Smithsonian Folkways will release Jazz Fest, a five-disc box set of live recordings from the iconic fest, spanning 1974 through 2016. You can preview the set now with Trombone Shorty’s hard-grooving 2010 version of “One Night Only (The March),” a track from his album Backatown, which came out that same year.
The set’s 53 tracks span the various genres represented at Jazz Fest, while putting the focus on local artists rather than big-name headliners. Disc...

After 969 episodes, 39-year-old talk show host Jimmy Fallon said goodbye to his late night spot forever on Friday as he prepares to take over The Tonight Show. With his other gig already lined up, the comedian’s final broadcast was filled with highlights and special guests, including a great opening monologue taking a friendly jab at his fierce rivals – and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “On a Night Like This” with the singer-accordionist Buckwheat Zydeco helping out. In the show’s last moments, Fallon took his final Late Night bow with the Muppets, to cover the Band’s delightful hit “The Weight.” Watch the highlights below. Enjoy!

After 969 episodes, 10,000 monologue jokes and one on-camera upchuck by Questlove, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon had no shortage of material to reflect upon during its final episode. Yet last night, its happy host summed up the entire show’s run succinctly with one Frankensteined über-joke: "Joe Biden needed Obamacare after Anthony Weiner texted Justin Bieber a picture of Chris Christie dating a Kardashian on the Jersey Shore."

With a shiny new desk waiting for him across the hall at the new "Tonight Show" stage, Jimmy Fallon bid his "Late Night" audience adieu on Friday (Feb. 7) with a heartfelt hour that, while less sentimental than Jay Leno's teary send-off the night before, was lovely, nonetheless.
Fallon kicked off the hour joining Buckwheat Zydeco on their song "On A Night Like This," before heading into a monologue that included some helpful tips from a few famous friends for guaranteed success at "The Tonight Show."
"You get a lot more ratings if you were less clothes." - Miley Cyrus"My only advice to you, Jimmy, is don't change anything." - Judd Apatow"Jimmy, do not be afraid to go blue. Real f***ing blue." - Rachel Maddow"Do I have any advice for Jimmy? Um, wipe front to back. You do not want to learn that the hard way.

Red Dog howls Elvin Bishop’s cherry red 1959 Gibson Es-345 howls over meandering blues in the opening track of his newest album, leaving no question as to why it’s earned the name Red Dog and how well it can speak. Red Dog Speaks journeys through old-timey blues and rock ‘n’ roll to zydeco with an all-star roster of contributors that includes Tommy Castro, Johnny Németh and Buckwheat Zydeco. Bishop’s own journey is evident in the down-home storytelling and varied styles. From the crooning blues of “Red Dog Speaks,” Bishop transitions into the rollicking “Neighbor Neighbor” with Németh providing vocals alongside...

Elvis Costello - Secret, Profane and Sugarcane You've heard Elvis Costello sing country music before, but not like this. The lad who gave us Almost Blue is quite mature and worldly wise now. On the opening track, when he sings, "Down among the wines and spirits where a man gets what he merits...once it was written in letters 'bout nine feet tall, now he sees how far he's fallen," he sounds like he truly has been sobered by life's hangovers. The song "Down Among The Wine And Spirits," plus a few others featured on Costello's new album, Secret, Profane And Sugarcane, premiered in 2007 on The Bob Dylan Show tour, and fans have been jawin' 'til the cows come home from Harvard about what direction Mr. Prolific's new album would take. Well, it's country, sort of, smart enough for the overly-educated,...
