The holiday season is in full swing, which means December 24th, 9 pm, Eastern Standard Time is gaining on us as we speak. And with all the wintertime hustle and bustle comes the oft-asked question: Is Rent a Christmas movie or not?
The 2005 film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s hit Broadway musical starts off on Christmas Eve. It chronicles a year in the life of a group of artistic friends living in New York’s East Village in the late 1980s. The final scene takes place on the following Christmas Eve. Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

Dawson felt her chances might have been slim to score one of the leading roles in the 2005 feature Rent. The musical film was an adaptation of a famous play of the same name, and was directed by Harry Potter filmmaker Chris Columbus.
Many of the actors who appeared in the play would return for the Columbus feature to reprise their roles in the film. Dawson was one of the few actors who would be a fresh face on the project if she was selected. It was a fact she was well aware of,...

Kevin Spacey faces seven new criminal charges, including four for sexual assault, according to an announcement Wednesday by prosecutors at the U.K.’s Crown Protection Service.
The new charges involve a series of sexual assaults against one man that prosecutors say occurred between 2001 and 2004. The counts include one for causing person to engage in sexual activity without consent and others for indecent and sexual assault.
The Oscar-winning actor already faced five counts in the U.K., including four counts of sexual assault by touching and a more serious charge of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without their consent. Those charges stem from accusations from three different men for incidents they say occurred between 2005 and 2013.

“A Strange Loop” won the much-coveted Tony Award for Best Musical at the 2022 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12. The tuner from Michael R. Jackson claimed a total of two Tonys at the ceremony. In addition to its strong showing at Radio City Music Hall, “A Strange Loop” is now just the 7th Pulitzer Prize for Drama winner to also win the Tony for Best Musical.
The drama prize at the Pulitzers was first handed out back in 1918, but the voters of that American institution tend to prefer plays rather than song and dance. In 104 years of this award, only 10 musicals have been awarded the Pulitzer: “Of Thee I Sing” (1932), “South Pacific” (1950), “Fiorello!” (1960), “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” (1962), “A Chorus Line” (1976), “Sunday in the Park With George” (1985), “Rent” (1996), “Next to Normal” (2010), “Hamilton” (2016), and “A Strange Loop” (2020). Fox Chief Charlie Collier Defends ‘Rent’ And Ratings: Understudies Would Have Been Impractical – TCA
Fox Entertainment chairman Charlie Collier said Wednesday at TCA that he does not regret airing Rent and also does not see a future of live musicals in which lead characters all have understudies. Asked what he learned from the experience, Collier admitted he’d sent handwritten notes to everyone involved in the production before its airdate and signed them, “Break a leg.”
Rent, based on Jonathan Larson’s beloved ’90s Broadway musical, reverted to mostly rehearsal footage in its “live” broadcast last month after star Brennin Hunt, who played struggling musician Roger, broke his foot during a dress rehearsal. The show went on, but ratings hit a record low for a live-musical television program.
“On Sunday morning I rewrote a lot of notes, so I learned that,” Collier joked during his session at the winter press tour in Pasadena.

Just in time for the election, EW has teamed with research firm Experian Marketing Services to present the favorite TV shows of Republicans and Democrats. Below are dozens of series whose audiences tend to skew heavily toward one political party or the other. To some extent, the results confirm partisan stereotypes: Dem favorites include snarky comedies like NBC's Community, Saturday Night Live, and IFC's Portlandia, liberal-messaging shows such as Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher, and Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom; plus there's a dash of science-based programming like Fox's Cosmos miniseries and PBS' Nova.

In many ways, 2009 was a yearlong echo of 2008. The recession that began last year may have ended, but unless you work for Goldman Sachs, you probably didn't notice. Meanwhile, so-called "new media"—a moniker that as time passes sounds more and more like it was invented by somebody's grandpa—continued to imitate a fast-moving glacier carving a canyon across the old-media landscape. Nearly every major story of 2009 sprang from these two reservoirs, already well tapped in 2008. But at the very least, this year was no less interesting than the one it followed. Here are 10 reasons why.10. Equity's swinging doorMaybe former Actors' Equity Association executive director John P. Connolly, who resigned Nov. 30, and former Equity president Mark S. Zimmerman, who resigned Dec. 12, really did decide within two weeks of each other to leave their union posts to focus on their respective acting careers and personal lives. Maybe not. But for Equity,...
