- During the Nazi occupation, he escaped to London as part of the Kindertransport, a rescue mission which evacuated around 10,000 refugee children in the months leading up to the outbreak of WWII.
- He moved to the United States in 1947. He served for three years as an illustrator in the U.S. Air Force before attending Yale University to study theater design. During college, he worked as a stagehand on Broadway.
- He was a prominent figure in Colorado performing arts throughout the second half of the 20th century. He produced around 400 plays, operas, and ballets at the Bonfils Theater in Denver. He developed a touring theater program for children, and founded the Denver Civic Theatre.
- His father was a friend of composer Kurt Weill.
