We're finally starting the fourth and final season. The show could have easily ended with Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 8 when Joanna Chang (Kristin Kreuk) won her season-long case and found out she was pregnant.
However, the show made it work by doing a similar strategy that they employed between Burden of Truth Season 1 and Burden of Truth Season 2 after Joanna won the Matheson Steel case, including digging deeper into character arcs.
On Burden of Truth Season 4 Episode 1, all of the characters struggled with personal issues, but Joanna clearly struggled the most.
She and Billy tried to balance parenting their new daughter while taking on a controversial legal battle against a powerful mine company that wants to open an old gold mine outside of Millwood.
Joanna's client Helen believed that the land needs to be protected. She feels land is what roots us for future generations, and that kind of farmland is irreplaceable.

CBC has renewed Burden of Truth for a fourth season, with production to begin in Winnipeg, Manitoba, later this summer. Diggstown has been renewed for a third season with shooting set to begin in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2021.
“Both Burden of Truth and Diggstown look at the legal world through a distinct lens by highlighting systemic corruption, injustice and discrimination in the legal system, including anti-Indigenous and anti-Black racism,” said Sally Catto, General Manager of Entertainment, Factual & Sports at CBC. “These two series offer a unique take on the traditional crime procedural, and continue to engage audiences across the country each season with strong performances and original storylines.”

Things did not go according to plan on Burden of Truth Season 3 Episode 6. Joanna and Billy took a big swing and they lost. Now there is going to be a lot of fallout.
The thing is, Joanna knew going in that making the suit a class-action was a bad idea. Again and again, she turned it down, even as Billy, Luna, and Kat championed the idea.
Billy made it seem like there was some underlying reason Joanna didn't want to make it a class suit, something she wasn't admitting. We'll never know if that is true because Joanna caved.
Kodie: You tell me to stay strong and be brave but I'm here all alone.
Joanna: You aren't alone in this Kodie. So many other mothers have gone through this and it's time for us to bring them into this fight. We are gonna force the courts to hear us because...
