The White House launched its Spotify account today with the release of the two-part "President's Summer Playlist," handily divided between "Day" and "Night." The "Day" playlist is interesting for the reveal that Potus is an Okkervil River fan, but it's the "Night" one we're going to discuss today, as a close examination reveals that this is almost certainly Barack Obama's summer sex playlist. We start off with Coltrane's "Favorite Things," and everyone knows that "jazz in my room" is the musical equivalent of "Netflix and chill." Then we move on to Beyoncé's "Superpower," and, Oh, what's that? An arm around your back? Now "Moondance" is playing. You notice your legs are suddenly touching. Two tracks later comes Al Green's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," and, Wow, did you ever notice how pretty your eyes are when you laugh like that? Now he's rounding into first, and by...

The Bonnaroo Music Festival, which runs for four days in Manchester Tenn., recently announced their 2014 lineup.
Headlining the 13th annual Bonnaroo will be Elton John, Kanye West, Jack White, Lionel Richie, Vampire Weekend, The Avett Brothers, Phoenix, Skrillex, Arctic Monkeys, Frank Ocean and The Flaming Lips.
Also heading to the Great Stage Park this summer will be Neutral Milk Hotel, Wiz Khalifa, Cut Copy, The Head and the Heart, Lauryn Hill, Broken Bells, Ice Cube, Slightly Stoopid, Fitz and The Tantrums, Cake, Janelle Monae, Amos Lee and John Butler Trio.
West was a surprise choice for the festival, which hasn’t had the rapper in their lineup since 2008 when he walked onto the stage nearly two hours after his scheduled set time. Though he tried to blame Pearl Jam’s extended set, the crowd united in booing him.

Okkervil River frontman Will Sheff met producer John Agnello, who has worked with artists like Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur, Jr, just before cutting Okkervil River’s new album Silver Gymnasium. And as the story goes, the two formed a strong partnership in the studio after they fell into their rather impromptu, albeit rigid, recording schedule: wake up early, work hard in the studio, unwind over drinks. It only took a month for this regimen to yield Okkervil River’s gorgeously nostalgic Silver Gymnasium before the two parted ways. Now a year later, Sheff recently met up with Agnello at a...

Damn, playing a Gibson Sg never looked or sounded so sexy! Before the press folks dropped her new album on me, I didn't know of this compelling singer-songwriter formerly with the North Carolina outfit The Biscuit Burners. This is my pick hit from her new effort. Collaborating with bassist Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses has given her a chiming folk-rock vibe on her third solo effort. And tours with the Tedeschi Trucks Band and Chris Isaak certainly helped inform her "new" sound.

The third track on one of my favorite rock records of the last decade, Okkervil River’s The Stage Names, is called “A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene.” Without context, its lyric is a bit of a tough nut to crack. Will Sheff sings about events unfolding on a TV screen in the first verse, recaps a dream in the second, and seems to outline the narrator’s innermost wishes in the third. What’s not immediately apparent is that the first verse outlines scenes from two completely different TV shows – scenes that happened to be scored by Okkervil River songs. The first half of the verse refers to “It Ends With a Fall” (from Down the River of Golden Dreams) and its use on the reality series Breaking Bonaduce. (I don’t have that clip handy.) The second half, and probably the more illustrative of the two in any case,...

What makes some film soundtracks transcend from mere background music to helping a director tell a story and help invoke an emotional response? Is it a clever mix of well chosen tunes that capture the zeitgeist or an eclectic mix of older material that either captures a time and place or sets a tone of nostalgia? The answer varies depending on the feature film. 2012 was a fantastic year for original motion picture movie scores but not so good for soundtracks. Still, Simon and I have managed to pull a list of what we feel were the very best.

Shearwater’s journey from a ramshackle Okkervil River sister act to one of indie rock’s foremost purveyors of chamber-pop drama is one of the past decade’s great musical evolutions. Animal Joy puts an exclamation point on the story, largely avoiding the airy, avian-themed introspection of the band’s recent efforts in favor of fiery guitar work and a beastly rhythm section. Opening track “Animal Life” makes the group’s intentions clear, offering a restless tempo and a rhythmic emphasis Shearwater has often avoided; “Breaking The Yearlings,” all uncomfortable notes and thunderous drumming, stomps with mammoth feet. Although they have the hilarious Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie at Sundance, Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim are involved in a vastly different project. Directed by Rick Alverson, The Comedy is a dark character piece featuring Heidecker as an uncivil Brooklyn hipster who throws out racist jokes and vulgar quips with a generally unpleasant demeanor. Produced by the popular music label Jagjaguwar, outside of Wareheim, some of Swanson’s friends also include Will Sheff of Okkervil River and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem.
Swanson (Heidecker) lives on a boat with his only mode of transportation being a smaller boat. His dad is in a hospital, but instead of bonding with him, he insults the doctor. He hangs out on his friends couch, but mostly just makes fun of the “loser” in the group. For Okkervil River's deeply nostalgic song, "Your Past Life as a Blast," director Isaac Ravishankara sought to capture a distant memory on video.
"My initial inspiration came from some of William Faulkner's novels, especially 'The Sound and the Fury,' where the same story is told from four unique perspectives," Ravishankara explains. Also, I had been reading a lot about how the brain processes time, and also thinking a lot about meaning in juxtaposed images."
A boy and a girl share a jaunt to an isolated lake, take off their clothes, swim away, and according to our sources, live out the rest of their lives. Where do these two lovers memories overlap? Where do they part? A simple concept, but the impressions it leaves are as deep as the lake into which they plunge.

Once mentored by Daniel Lanois in La, Burton has recorded Okkervil River, Windsor For the Derby and Wilco side-project On Fillmore, but gave up the knob twiddling on this one to Mike Bridavksy, who recorded and mixed the album at Russian Recording in a mere five days.
The songs on this album are character sketches of alienated people who "stay up all night, stumbling through isolation to explore trauma and ecstasy in search of their own glamour." It sounds like Edm distilled the driving force behind the night life of people of a certain age in every city across America. Below is the arresting album opener, "Hold Me Down.

Last night, Okkervil River headlined a sold-out concert at the Cat's Cradle, the long-time and legendary North Carolina stopover between Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The Cat's Cradle holds just more than 500 people, meaning that any two of the three bands on Wednesday night's bill--Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus and Future Islands, combining for one of the summer's biggest indie tours--could have sold out the show just fine. The Cradle appearance was the second of the month-long tour, and excitement was high. After all, Future Islands are a Baltimore band, but they're actually kids from nearby Raleigh. What's more, neighboring Durham was one of the first towns outside of New England to fall for Titus Andronicus, back before a big record deal and Pitchfork laurels. This was the kind of show, then, where tickets were sold in parking lots, where long-faced indie kids stood close to the entrance in hopes of someone having a spare.

The documentary My Heart is An Idiot, David Meiklejohn's directorial debut, follows the romantic travails of the amusingly -- and sometimes painfully -- solipsistic Davy Rothbart, the founder of Found Magazine, a compendium of found notes and love letters sent in from around the country. More interestingly for our purposes, Rothbart also provided the story for Easier with Practice, the brilliant phone-sex indie that garnered a criminally unfair Nc-17 from the MPAA last year.
You can see the creepy-but-sweet origins of Easier with Practice in My Heart is An Idiot, in which Meiklejohn documented two annual tours that Rothbart took in support of Found. Originally conceived as a documentary about the magazine tours, a more interesting tale of unrequited obsession grew out of it, which Meiklejohn meticulously edited together over the last few years, along with a side story -- that I won't spoil -- recreated with staged footage...

The summer movie season begins in earnest with Thor, a rock ‘em, sock ‘em action flick and comic-book adaptation brought to you by…director Kenneth Branagh, best known for his acting, and for his Shakespeare adaptations. Given that Rick, Simon and Justine are puzzled by this pairing, they decide to also take on his 1994 flop Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to see how he’s handled genre fare in the past. Also in this episode: a brief debate on Marvel Studios’ super-franchise being unveiled over the next couple of years.

When music defies easy description, it’s tempting to define it by what it isn’t. In the case of Okkervil River’s I Am Very Far, it’s difficult to hear its dark, dense, mysterious songs without immediately branding them as a far cry from the straightforward rock ’n’ roll fables of The Stage Names and The Stand Ins. For a band so often noted for its emotional directness, that could be a death sentence. However, considering that frontman and lead songwriter Will Sheff has shouted out exactly what’s on his and his characters’ minds since 2005’s ...

This is the best cover of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” I’ve ever heard, and I’m a big fan of the song. Why didn’t anyone think to use a percussion fridge before?

I try to follow politics but it’s just too tedious sometimes. Some genius in the UK decided to make one of their political referendums accessible to the slobbering, internet following masses by adding cat lulz. The result is a very entertaining video that makes me look super smart by getting me up to date on the UK alternative vote referendum as well as introducing the internet’s newest star: Reform Cat!

Oh, Math Nerds, you clever gehls and boys, by associating your "Pi Day" with the delectability of pie, you've forced us all, for love of pastry, to sit up and take notice every March 14th. So happy day, nerds, you win again. Here's an online game of Pick Up Sticks for you mathematically inclined. (Tommy Ogden)
Did you know that there is some weird group of Pi dissenters that advocate Tau Day instead? I'm afraid they'll never win, for the Pi-heads have pastry on their side. (Tau Day)
And I know some of you more fractious fractals were saddened when this Amazing Pi/Pie shirt was no longer available at Woot. (What Is With Your One Day Availability Reign Of Terror, Woot?) I found a somewhat similar shirt over at Zazzle. Cold comfort, I know. But cold pie, is still tasty pie. (Zazzle)

Okkervil River are returning with their sixth full-length "I Am Very Far" for longtime home Jagjaguwar, and, at least with the case of newly unleashed "Wake and Be Fine," the thing's starting with a bang. Will Sheff's sounding unhinged (in the good way) on the track, available now for download via the rock band's website for the price of your black heart your email address. It reminds me of Cursive frontman's Tim Kasher's fleshy and well-arranged solo projects, and even a little bit of the daunting growl that Conor Oberst used to nurture in his earlier years. I don't know why...

After playing a handful of dates at this month’s SXSW, Okkervil River will take to the road throughout much of June in support of their upcoming release, I Am Very Far. Titus Andronicus, Future Islands, Julianna Barwick, New Villager will all perform in support of the Austin rockers on the trip. In addition to their monthlong North American headlining tour, Will Sheff and company will also open for the Arcade Fire on April 30....

On the heels of their mega-win at the 2011 Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Arcade Fire has announced the next leg of their U.S. tour in full. The stint takes the Montreal band throughout the West, Southwest, Texas and Midwest, starting April 9 and going through their May 6 stop at the New Orleans Jazz Fest. It also includes a stop at Coachella and previously announced trio of Chicago shows. They've selected some stellar indie acts to support at various dates: Local Natives, The National, Okkervil River and Explosions in the Sky are all on tap as openers. These...

There is so much going on at SXSW, just on the good old music front alone, that one person could not possibly absorb it all. Attempts have been made to be sure, but the more daring soul usually ends up with a condition called 6th street burnout (which may or may not include waking up in the back of a random band van without any pants). In an effort to stave that off I'll be highlighting a few choice events each week leading up to the festival, to help you (and I) plan ahead.
It's not easy sticking to a plan at SXSW, in fact spontaneity is often best, but here's a couple showcases I intend to bounce between on Wednesday, luckily they're at the same venue.
Wednesday March 16 Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian showcase:
Red 7 Patio (w/ Tig Notaro as Mc)
8:30- 9:10 Lia Ices
9:30- 10:15 Special Guests...

For someone whose sort of job it is to be aware of all the new TV that's on each weeknight, it's really a little embarrassing how frequently I just put on some reruns while doing other things around my apartment. This means that I barely pay attention to TV anymore unless it's something I really want to watch, it's sort of like a flickering box of lights that makes my apartment feel not so boring for a little while at a time. Is that weird? Actually, don't tell me, I really don't care. Here's your Monday night TV:
8:00pm: "Antiques Roadshow" on PBS
"The Bachelor" on ABC
"Enough Already with Peter Walsh" on Own. Okay, so use an anonymous name if you must, but can someone tell me if they're actually watching anything on Own? Because if I don't have to list this shit I won't. I figured for...
