Superman Returns feels like it's becoming the forgotten Superman film - but it does get a lot of things right...
The landscape of superhero films in 2006 was largely unrecognisable from that of today. The phrase ‘cinematic universe’ had yet to enter the common vernacular, and it had been 19 years since the most iconic hero of all, Superman, was last found in cinemas, in the hilariously dreadful Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. Only two years had passed since the tragic death of Christopher Reeve, the actor who had embodied the titular Krytonian on-screen, leaving behind some well-worn boots to fill.
Appetites, however, were beginning to change. Sam Rami’s Spider-Man series had caused a sensation during the early 2000s, and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins had brought newfound credibility to the DC brand. It seemed obvious that Superman himself was due for a similar reinvention for the 21st century,...

Green Day's longtime guitarist, Jason White, has cancer, the group announced on Friday. The band released a statement on their website alerting fans to White's condition. "We have some news to report regarding our brother Jason White, and wanted you to hear it from us before word spread," the announcement read. Summarising a short film that’s runs just shy of 13 minutes is always tricky, but it doesn’t help when over a quarter of that time is taken up by a surprising amount of credits in a tacky cursive font. To keep a short story shorter though, Mary (Sheri Davis) recently became the adoptive mother of Lili (Gracie Whitten), who seems to enjoy drawing monsters with pointed bloody teeth. Over a phone call with Mary’s boss, we find out that her husband is in Saudi Arabia, only when Lili asks for ice cream, we find that not only is he not in Saudi Arabia, he’s dead and chopped into pieces so he can fit in the freezer.
Surprisingly enough, I didn’t hate it and kind of want to see more.

Conceptual illustrator Dorotka Sapinska worked on designs for Bryan Singer's Superman Returns (2006) and Gavin Hood's X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). The first set is from Superman Returns and includes various hairstyle designs for Lex Luthor's henchwoman, Kitty Kowalski (played by Parker Posey). Also, tattoo designs for Lex Luthor's henchman that is killed by a paino Jason White (Tristan Lake Leabu), aka Superboy, happens to fling at him. The second set of images were for X-Men Origins: Wolverine and they feature tattoo designs for The Blob/Fred J. Dukes (Kevin Durand) and other mutant characters. He's back. A hero for our millennium. And not a moment too soon, because during the five years (much longer in movie-fan years!) Superman sought his home planet, things changed on his adopted planet. Nations moved on without him. Lois Lane now has a son, a fiance and a Pulitzer for "Why the World...
