We’re nearing September, which means we’re getting close to Alamo Drafthouse’s 10th annual Fantastic Fest. The film festival held in Austin, Texas is one of the most interesting and exciting fests around. Catering to hardcore cinephiles with a little bit of an interest in the strange, Fantastic Fest features a bevy of some of the best new horror films, indie thrillers, dark comedies, and low-budget sci-fi. Last year some of the best films included at the fest were Afflicted, Borgman, Jodorowsky’s Dune, The Sacrament, Blue Ruin, Grand Piano, We Are What We Are, A Field in England, The Congress, and Big Bad Wolves. In 2011 Fantastic Fest was one of the places to see Adam Wingard’s amazing You’re Next before it was shelved until it’s official release just last year.
Now the initial lineup for the 2014 festival has been announced and as always it looks very promising.

Our favorite film festival in the world is nigh. Later next month, Austin, Texas will host hundreds of genre fans for Fantastic Fest 2014!! We have the full list which includes the Us Premiere of Tusk as well as the World Premieres of ABCs of Death 2 and Horsehead. These won’t be all the films that will play the 10th anniversary of the film festival but it would be enough if it was. Look forward to more announcement waves of programming and don’t forget to follow up with our predictions that we made last week. I have added trailers above the film titles, if available. If the trailer is not available, there will be a still above the title.

It's that time of year again, isn't it? There is no greater party on Earth for fans of genre films than Austin's annual Fantastic Fest, and ten years in, they just keep making it better. "In 2014, we are taking no prisoners. This festival is going to set new boundaries of decadence, destruction and debauchery." - Tim League As much as I love events like Cannes, Sundance, or Toronto, I can't imagine the directors of those festivals ever issuing that statement. The scary thing is that Tim League isn't kidding. Fantastic Fest is special because it's much more than just movies being screened. Every day is packed with events that elevate the entire festival, and with this year taking place at the new Alamo Drafthouse on S. Lamar, complete with the brand-new Highball, it feels like it's going to be a blow-out the likes of which even the most avid Fantastic...

The Alamo Drafthouse’s Fantastic Fest has a stellar rep around these parts, and it’s not hard to see why when you consider some of the indie titles that have played there in recent years. Last year alone saw Coherence, Grand Piano and Septic Man make their world premieres, and films like Blue Ruin, Afflicted, Witching & Bitching, The Sacrament and Borgman all land in the U.S. for the first time.
This year doesn’t look to be any different, with a terrific lineup of indie titles including boatloads of promising horror. We’ve got sequels like The ABCs of Death 2 and V/H/S Viral, and originals like Kevin Smith’s anticipated Tusk and The Babadook. Keep in mind this is only the first wave of film announcements for Fantastic Fest 2014 – we’ll keep you posted as more titles are confirmed for the festival, which runs in Austin,...

★★☆☆☆ From Chris Kentis and Laura Lau - the husband and wife creative force behind 2003's taught aquatic horror Open Water - comes Silent House (2011), a Us remake of Uruguayan director Gustavo Hernandez's La Casa Muda (The Silent House, 2010). Starring rising star Elizabeth Olsen as the film's tormented 'damsel in distress', this seemingly archetypal haunted house horror is unique for ostensibly being shot in a singular, continuous take - or so it would seem.

*here be major spoilers. Director: Chris Kentis and Laura Lau. Writers: Gustavo Hernández, and Laura Lau. Cast: Elizabeth Olsen, Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross, and Adam Barnett. Married couple, Chris Kenis and Laura Lau, return from their thriller Open Water (2004) with another terrifying movie, Silent House. Silent House is a North American remake of Gustavo Hernandez's Uruguayan film La Casa Muda (2010). Both films incorporate long takes into their narrative. Some scenes last for longer than ten minutes. During each take, actress Elizabeth Olsen delivers an astounding peformance as Sarah, a young woman who must confront a tortured past. That tortured past is going to revealed here along with some of the pseudo-psychological aspects of the film. Sarah experiences memory loss: "I think I have holes up here (pointing to her head)." Her memory loss has been caused by years of repression. Also, her conversation partner is a figment of her imagination,...

In 2010, a small budget Spanish language horror film from Uruguay appeared called La Casa Muda. Directed by Gustavo Hernandez, it was supposedly shot in one take (this fact came into dispute soon after it's release), and followed, in real time, a girl who is stalked through an abandoned cottage by an unknown assailant. It was praised for it's originality, technical achievements, and ability to to create some genuinely scary moments. With all this praise it was inevitable that Hollywood would come calling with a remake. But as has been the case with recent english language remakes, it is quite good. Silent House is the story of Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), a young woman fixing up an old family home for sale with her father (Adam Trese) and Uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens). When her and her father go to investigate strange noise in the house, they become victims of a terrifying home invasion.

If you needed any more evidence as to just what an acting talent Elizabeth Olsen is, take a trip to Silent House...
Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen) is returning to the house where she spent her summers growing up for the first time in years. She's in the company of her father John (Adam Trese) and her Uncle Peter (Eric Sheffer Stevens). The three of them are in the process of cleaning out and refurbishing the long-forgotten old place in an attempt to sell it and get a little money out of it, since nobody in the family really uses it anymore. The house is in pretty bad shape, so the refurb has been taking longer than expected.
However, Sarah's not long for this work. She's just going to be there a few days to pack up some of her things from childhood, and then she'll be moving on with her life.

What should be a nifty thriller with novelty value becomes a muddled mess in the hands of filmmakers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau. They previously collaborated on Open Water, which had a great setup -- bickering couple accidentally left behind on a scuba-diving trip in the shark-infested Caribbean -- and then did nothing but tread water. Their least appealing inclination as filmmakers is indulged again to a heavy degree in their newest effort; once again, we don't much care what happens to the lead character(s). Silent House is a remake of La Casa Muda, directed by Gustavo Hernandez. The thriller from Uruguay played Cannes in 2010, where our own Todd Brown saw it, and re-reading his review after seeing the English-language remake, it appears...

The English-language remake of Silent House is based on the original ultra-low-budget La Casa Muda, an Uruguayan horror from 2010.
Chris Kentiss and Laura Lau, the filmmakers behind the 2004 shark thriller Open Water, were directors-for-hire on the remake, which purports to be all one long continuous shot, à la Hitchcock’s Rope.
It isn’t. By the filmmakers' own admission, the film was shot much the same as any movie, scene by scene, and is only edited together to give the illusion that it’s all one long uninterrupted hour and a half. Because this film takes place in one house with one main character over the course of one hour and a half, there are a lot...

Before you start reading this, just know I am talking about the Spanish-language original and not the American remake starring Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) that hits theaters on March 9. Also, this article is filled with spoilers for the original film, which I watched as the result of a scheduling issue that caused me to miss a screening of the remake. Having missed that screening, I decided to watch a year-old screener of Gustavo Hernandez's 2010 original, which earned a lot of attention when it was released, primarily due to the fact it was supposedly shot in one, long 86-minute take. The Silent House begins with a girl -- presumably around the age of 21 or so -- named Laura (Florencia Colucci), walking through a field with her father to what appears to be an abandoned house. They wait for the owner, Nestor, to arrive and let them in so...

The trailer for Silent House, the much talked about American remake of the acclaimed Spanish thriller, has just arrived online. Silent House stars Elizabeth Olsen (younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley) as a woman trapped in her family's crumbling lake house. The film was directed by Open Water duo Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, and is based on the Spanish film by Gustavo Hernandez. Silent House hits theaters on March 9, 2012.

The Olsen Twins' younger sister Elizabeth announced her arrival as an actress this year with a breakout performance in the indie cult drama Martha Marcy May Marlene. Wondering what she might do for an encore? Her next film is a more straightforward horror flick with an interesting gimmick: it's all presented in real-time as a single continuous take. The movie is called Silent House, and it seems to revolve around a home invasion of some sort, although it's unclear if anything supernatural is at work here. This isn't the first movie to claim to be in real-time (Nick of Time starring Johnny Depp, anyone?), but if you think you've seen this before, it's probably because you have; Silent House is a remake of the Uruguayan horror film La Casa Muda, directed by Gustavo Hernandez. The U.S. remake is co-directed by Chris Kentis, who also did the indie shark thriller Open Water.

Movies presented in real-time are a sort of rarity. High Noon and Rope jump to the mind immediately, and they’re fantastic, but there are also a handful of films that never got past the concept as pure gimmick. However, it’s always been interesting to guess at what the appeal of taking away the possibility of jumping forward or back in time really is. One obvious trick, is the creation of suspense. A constantly ticking clock that the audience is physically aware of. That seems to be alive and well for Sundance favorite Silent House which features Sundance favorite Elizabeth Olsen. It comes from Open Water creators Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, and tells the story of a young woman and her father who are stuck inside a home where a noise continues to grow louder and louder. It’s based off the Uruguayan movie from Gustavo Hernandez that Rob was not a big fan of...

Whether you call it experimentation or a gimmick, it’s never a good thing when the peculiar style in which a film was created is its most interesting feature. In shooting La Casa Muda (The Silent House) Director Gustavo Hernandez committed to a remarkably arduous restriction: he filmed it all in one take. One 89-minute, uninterrupted take. No tricks to turn two long takes into one like in the intro of The Player; one take. It’s an extreme undertaking, to be sure, and granted there are plenty of moments where he could have cheated (I guess we’ll have to take his word on it – because there are far too many moments where it would have been easy to do so), but what really matters is whether or not The Silent House warrants a viewing and how well it succeeds in the creation of an eerie atmosphere. Dive into three dark, disturbing, and intense clips from Gustavo Hernandez’s spooky “The Silent House”, billed as “the first horror film in the world that discovers fear without tricks in one sequence of 78 minutes”. Basically, the whole thing takes place in one long, continuous shot, minus any editing tricks. Which, let’s face it, is pretty damn impressive. The film already has an American remake playing the festival circuits, but don’t let that stop you from peeking at the original first. And if you’re interested, we already have two reviews of the film online. Check out James Mudge’s review here, then Todd Rigney’s take here. I am very much of two minds when it comes to Gustavo Hernandez and his single shot horror film La Casa Muda. On the one hand, it is undeniably well made by people who know their craft and know how to use sound and light to build and maintain tension. On the other, however, you don't want to think about the script too much, specifically whether anybody in real life would behave in a fashion anywhere remotely close to how the lead character does in the film. You really don't want to do that. That said, the tone was enough to land the film in Cannes 2010 and trigger an immediate English language remake which premiered less than a year later at Sundance 2011. The Silent House (La Casa Muda) directed by Gustavo Hernandez and photographed by Pedro Luque (Ataque de Pánico), is the first Latin America film (and the second world wide) to have been filmed by a photographic camera. It also claims to be the first horror film to be filmed in one single shot using the Slr digital, a Canon Eos 5D Mark and a minimal low budget of $6000. If you’re a fan of Blair Witch Project, [Rec] and Paranormal Activity, you should certainly be interested in seeing this movie. Based on a true story that happened in the late 40’s in a small village in Uruguay, The Silent House (or La Casa Muda) was filmed with a digital camera in one single continuous shot of seventy eight minutes, without any cuts And in real time. Also the first feature film that was completely filmed with the Canon Mark II the film focuses on Laura, who, second by second intends to leave a house which hides an obscure secret, unharmed.
Laura and her father Wilson settle down in a cottage they have to renew since its owner will soon put the house up for sale. They will spend the night there and repair the following morning. Everything seems to go smoothly until Laura hears a sound that comes from outside and gets louder and louder on the upper floor of the house. Wilson goes up to see what is going...

Eight years ago, filmmaking team Chris Kentis and Laura Lau proved with the stranded-at-sea thriller Open Water that they could make an interesting movie with experimental ideas. Their latest offering, Silent House, is shaping up to be another technically playful achievement; a horror movie filmed (or edited to look like it was filmed) entirely in a single take.
Silent House is cleverly being billed as serving up “real fear in real time.” It tells the story of Sarah (Elizabeth Olsen), a young woman who has returned to her old family home with her father (Adam Treese) and uncle (Eric Sheffer Stevens) in order to fix it up and sell it. To avoid spoiling anything, I’ll just say they hear strange noises, then freaky things happen.
The film is a remake of Gustavo Hernandez‘s Spanish-language 2010 film, La Casa Muda, which is being released in the UK on April 8. Check...

While the remake is making a lot of noise over at the Sundance Film Festival, some new stills for the original Silent House (La Casa Muda) have made their way online! Dig it!
Directed by Gustavo Hernandez, photographed by Pedro Luque, and produced by Gustavo Rojo at an amazingly low budget that amounts to $6,000 (Us). La Casa Muda (The Silent House) digs deeply into the unexplored subject of psychological terror, and here's the full synopsis provided to us by Rojo:
Laura (Florencia Colucci) and her father Wilson (Gustavo Alonso) settle down in a cottage that seems to be off the beaten track in order to update it since its owner (Abel Tripaldi) will soon put the house up for sale. They will spend the night there in order to start the repairs the following morning. Everything seems to go smoothly until Laura hears a sound that comes from outside and...

Much like Filmax's Rec, you will probably end up seeing the remake to La Casa Muda> (trailer) before you get a chance to see Gustavo Hernandez's chilling ghost tale from Uruguay. While the Chris Kentis-directed remake The Silent House (English-language translation) just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (review here), we just now got our hands on the first batch of lantern-filed imagery from Hernandez's original. "The plot is based on a true story that happened in the late 40's in a small village in Uruguay. The film focuses on Laura, who, second by second, intends to leave a house which hides an obscure secret, unharmed. Mickey Liddell's Liddell Entertainment has picked up domestic and most world rights to the horror film Silent House after it's premiere at Sundance. The film is a remake of the Gustavo Hernandez-directed Uruguayan thriller La Casa Muda which premiered at Cannes.
Silent House is about a girl (Elizabeth Olsen) who gets stuck in an old house that is possibly haunted. What makes the film special is that it's supposedly filmed in one continuous shot. This sounds pretty cool, but it is all just a big marketing scam?
Here's the official plot synopsis:
“[Silent House] is told in real time in one continuous take, just as Sarah sees – and experiences – it.”
The official director’s statement reads as follows:
“…We were immediately intrigued and excited by the challenge of telling a story in a single unbroken camera shot. Making this film fascinated us, as it presented a unique approach to filmmaking,...

[1] Mike Fleming [2] is reporting that Mickey Liddell's Liddell Entertainment has acquired distribution rights to the horror film Silent House. The film which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, is a remake of the Gustavo Hernandez-directed Uruguayan thriller La Casa Muda which premiered at Cannes. The concept is simple, a girl (played by Elizabeth Olsen) gets stuck in an old house, possibly haunted, and the movie is filmed in one continuous shot. The gimmick is quite fun, but is the film really one long continuous shot.... or is it all a marketing scam? The official plot synopsis claims: "[Silent House] is told in real time in one continuous take, just as Sarah sees – and experiences – it." In the official director's statement, it reads: "...We were immediately intrigued and excited by the challenge of telling a story in a single unbroken camera shot. Mickey Liddell's Liddell Entertainment has acquired most rights to Chris Kentis and Laura Lau's Sundance thriller "Silent House," according to Deadline. To be clear, Liddell is not on as a distributor; he'll work with "Silent House" reps at CAA to close distribution deals. "Silent House," which debuted Friday in a Park City At Midnight section screening, is a remake of the Uruguyan thriller directed by Gustavo Hernandez. Kentis and Lau ...

Exclusive: Mickey Liddell's Liddell Entertainment has acquired domestic and most world rights to the horror film Silent House in a deal just brokered by CAA. I'm told the deal is a $3 million minimum guarantee, and a P&A commitment upwards of $3 million. Liddell gets all territories but UK, Scandanavia and the Middle East. Liddell, who made a splash last year backing the acquisition of the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed Biutiful, is working with CAA to set a distributor. Several are circling, including Lionsgate and The Weinstein Company. The film made its debut in a Friday midnight screening. A remake of the Gustavo Hernandez-directed Uruguayan thriller La Casa Muda, Silent House is the second film by Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, filmmakers who helmed the 2004 Sundance midnight pic Open Water. Elizabeth Olsen heads the cast. A family returns to their former boarded up house to spruce it up for sale.

Park City, Ut -- It is unusual for Sundance to open with a midnight movie, and especially with a press screening of a midnight movie. I'm glad they did, though, even if I think "Silent House" is an exercise more than a movie. And that's not a dismissal… just an observation. I haven't seen "La Casa Muda," the film by Gustavo Hernandez, which was produced and released in Uruguay. It played Cannes in 2010, and I remember seeing a trailer for it online and being impressed by what looked like a fair degree of technical polish and the clever idea of...

With the year wrapping up the time has come to cast an eye back on the year that was 2010 and try to sum up what has come and gone. As always when doing these things I'm a little bit surprised how things have shaken down in the final lists. A few notes before we get rolling.
First, as should always be kept in mind, this lists are purely subjective and should be treated as such. They're not meant to be an objective statement of quality of lack thereof, merely a reflection of my own tastes and viewing habits.
Second, I haven't seen everything yet. The absence of films like True Grit and Bedevilled means only that I haven't seen them yet. There are a few other prominent ones out there that I haven't seen as well.
Third, as I went through my viewing year it quickly became apparent that 2010 was...

In its tenth year, The Leeds Film Festival’s “Night Of The Dead” disappointingly lacked its normal predictable balance of a teen slasher, the downright nasty, a zombie movie and Japanese gore, but lived up to its eye-rotting highly entertaining reputation with an extended 12-hour programme running from 10pm to 10 am in its usual home, The Hyde Park Picture House. The Red Bulls were out, cushions were in place, pyjamas worn, the shockingly terrible bad film amnesty was back, a surprise showing of an old favourite made an appearance (Dellamorte Dellamore) and ten rather exciting shorts were shown.

The prospect of a horror movie filmed in one continuous shot is a herculean feat to say the least. La Casa Muda, aka Silent House, the first Latin American film to be shot entirely with a professional photo camera that also happened to be filmed in one single 80-minute sequence shot, achieved this feat. So of course we have to remake it here!
