The BBC has announced today that it’s giving its viewers a special treat over the upcoming yuletide period, as several of the network’s top shows will be made available to stream online. The series chosen include Doctor Who, Sherlock, Line of Duty, Planet Earth, Happy Valley and many more. From what we understand, they’ll be made available on the BBC’s catch-up service BBC iPlayer, in a move that suggests the corporation is trying to rebrand the site as a rival to the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime.
BBC director of content Charlotte Moore had this to say about the treat in a statement released earlier:
“It’s fantastic to give audiences a special gift on iPlayer to complement our schedules. Sit back and indulge as we curate some of the most loved shows you may have missed first time round or favourites you want to watch again.

Tracey Ullman has been creating characters – and a string of successful shows, including Tracey Takes On… (HBO, 1996-99) and Tracey Ullman's State of the Union (Showtime, 2008-10) – for decades. But it was only recently that she's really embraced impersonating celebrities and politicians. For the second season of Tracey Ullman's Show, which originally aired on the BBC and is now available on HBO, she's back with her impressions of a rascally Dame Judi Dench (and her frenemy Dame Maggie Smith), a sexy singing Angela Merkel, and a version of Jerry Hall that will make you squirm.

Ever since Jodie Whittaker was announced as the next Doctor last month, we’ve heard a lot about how excited fans and previous Doctor Who stars are for the Thirteenth Time Lord to be a woman. Whittaker herself has also talked about her enthusiasm for the role. Up until now, though, we haven’t heard much from the point of view of the BBC bosses. After all, you’d think that showrunner Chris Chibnall’s plan to take the series in a very different direction might have been met with some resistance.
As it so happens, though, it seems the higher ups were instantly on board with the idea. Speaking at the Edinburgh Television Festival (via Radio Times), the BBC director of content, Charlotte Moore, said:

It’s approaching newly a year and a half since the TV favourite Luther last hit the small screen, but word has just come through that BBC America have given the big thumbs up for the go ahead on Season 5, and yes Idris Elba fans – the big man himself will be returning.
Currently slated as a limited return with only four episodes scheduled, no other cast or air date has been revealed but shooting is set to start early in the new year for the BBC and BBC America. Show creator Neil Cross confirmed the award-winning series return with a statement,
“Now what? It’s a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London? It can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know.

Juno and the Paycock Directed by Charlotte Moore The Irish Repertory Theatre 132 W. 22nd St., NYC October 20-December 29, 2013

A new version of '70s series Poldark is among four drama commissions announced by the BBC today (May 9).
Outgoing BBC One controller Danny Cohen has ordered a new adaptation of Winston Graham's Cornish romantic saga.
Tony Jordan (Life on Mars, Hustle) will also pen Dickensian for the channel - the drama is based on the works of Charles Dickens and will see characters from the author's novels cross paths in "the most surprising of ways".
Two further projects in the works at BBC One are Our Zoo - a six-part period drama about the man who created Chester Zoo in the 1930s - and Blackpool creator Peter Bowker's From There to Here - set in the aftermath of 1996's Ira Manchester bombing of the Arndale shopping centre.

People invited to submit pictures on 12 November for documentary to be broadcast as part of Cultural Olympiad
The BBC is to ask members of the public to turn their cameras on themselves on a single day this year to help create a self-portrait of Britain that will be broadcast as a feature-length documentary on BBC2 in 2012.
The director Ridley Scott, whose films include Gladiator and Bladerunner, is working with the BBC on Britain in a Day, which aims to provide a snapshot of the country on 12 November. The documentary will form part of the BBC's Cultural Olympiad, which will showcase British life and culture during the year when London hosts the Olympic Games.
The BBC said it aimed to create the "definitive self-portrait of Britain today". The project will be officially launched on The One Show in late October.

Commissioning editor Charlotte Moore favours quality and craft over feelgood and populist
Sheffield Doc/Fest supplement: full coverage of the festival
Charlotte Moore, the BBC commissioning editor for documentaries, is fresh from a hat trick of wins at last month's Bafta TV awards. But she has no time to rest on her laurels, with Terry Pratchett's controversial euthanasia documentary about to air.
Moore says it is not her job to get "massive viewing figures" and that she favours quality and craft over feelgood and populist. There is certainly not much feelgood about Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die, which will be broadcast on BBC2 on 13 June and feature footage of the Discworld author witnessing the assisted death of a man with advanced motor neurone disease in Switzerland's Dignitas clinic. The BBC has faced negative press coverage over the documentary, accusing it of being "a cheerleader for assisted suicide". Moore suggests...

Oscar-winning director claims factual shows were 'must-see' in 1980s and 1990s but are now low priority in schedules
Reality television is pushing documentaries to the "periphery" of the schedules, according to Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald.
Speaking at the inaugural BBC documentaries lecture Shrinking Cameras, Expanding Worlds in London on Thursday evening, Touching the Void director Macdonald said that in the 1980s and 1990s the format was "must-see" television for viewers.
"Now viewing figures are down. Why? There are the occasional [documentaries] which are events. But when Modern Times was on it was must-see. Maybe it is because of the rise of multichannel and reality television that people get their fix of reality in other ways than documentaries, [so] they are on the periphery," he added.
"The important thing is the BBC, Channel 4, Sky and others make room for a few really, really good documentaries and Storyville etc continue to exist and be funded.
