Updated: Ever since Todd Black got into the film business as a producer, he wanted to work with Aaron Sorkin.
“I remember early on seeing things he wrote, even plays, and going ‘Wow, this guy has a voice like nobody’s business,'” says the Oscar-nominated producer of Fences.
However, Black says “I never had anything good enough to bring to him.” This goes back to some sage advice Black received from Denzel Washington years ago.
The two were having lunch at the Columbia Pictures commissary shortly after Washington took home a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Glory. The budding producer was eager to make a movie with Washington, but the actor told him, “‘When you read a script that keeps you up at night and makes your heart pound and you can’t get it out of your mind because of the characters and the story, call me. Years ago, before Aaron Sorkin made Molly’s Game or The Trial of the Chicago 7, producer Todd Black and his then executive Jenna Block requested a meeting. Block had written her college thesis on Lucille Ball, and the two felt strongly that there was a movie in Ball’s story, and that the Oscar-winning screenwriter was the one to tell it.
Sorkin wasn’t so sure.

Nearly hours after Deadline learned that Nicole Kidman is in negotiations to play Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s Being The Ricardos, social media users challenged the casting. On Sunday, Ball and Desi Arnaz’s daughter Lucie Arnaz set the record straight on who will play her mother.
“Stop arguing about who should play it – ‘she doesn’t look like her, her nose isn’t the same she isn’t as funny,'” Arnaz said, poking fun at the complaints around Kidman’s casting. “Just trust us. It’s going to be a nice film and p.s. the voting is over.”
The comedy legend’s daughter addressed the casting in a Facebook video, where she also detailed a great deal about the upcoming project for Amazon Studios. She clarified for viewers that the Sorkin title will not be an I Love Lucy reboot or anything of the sort. Instead,...

Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem are set to star as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in a new film being set up at Amazon Studios, “Being the Ricardos,” from director Aaron Sorkin. The Academy Award-winning scribe also wrote the film. The news was first reported by Deadline. An Amazon rep confirmed the project to IndieWire, though deals for the actors are still closing.
Sorkin was reportedly originally only going to write the film, but decided to stay on to direct after his experience helming “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” a major Oscar contender this year at rival streaming giant Netflix. Originally, Cate Blanchett was circling the script to play the leading role of Lucille Ball, according to reports, but has now been replaced by Kidman. Fellow Aussie actress Blanchett was in talks to take on the role as early as 2017, when it was first bought by Amazon.
