Some Gentle People There: Johnson’s Sophomore Effort Recalls Place of Fear
Here’s an arresting point of intrigue into the miasma of historical reexaminations of the AIDS onslaught—the fear and trepidation associated with the initial development of the test used to detect infection. Would the government use it to quarantine, as a way to cordon off the diseased before they could spread the virus among others? Would it be information employers could get a hold of? The endless anxieties that resulted from something as simple as confirmation were boundless, and so, Chris Mason Johnson’s sophomore film, Test, manages to gain a unique perspective in this examination of knowing one’s status and the implementation of safe sex. Cineastes may compare its anxious final act to Agnes Varda’s New Wave classic, Cleo From 5 to 7, though Johnson’s film doesn’t quite grapple with its protagonist...

Kristoffer Cusick bounced from Hardbody to First Date on Broadway
First Date is a new Broadway musical about a blind date between Aaron (Zachary Levi from Chuck fame) and Casey (Krysta Rodriguez from Smash) and feeds into the fears, anxieties and other emotional traps that go along with dating.
The other actors play multiple characters throughout the musical, but Casey’s gay Bff, Reggie (played by Kristoffer Cusick) stands out not just for the burst of energy he brings to every moment he has in the show, but also by the fact that he’s someone we can probably all relate to.
I spoke with Cusick recently about landing the First Date role just as another Broadway gig was ending. He also shared his thought about being out professionally and being comfortable with who he is.

Zachary Levi has the moment every actor dreams about. Center-stage at Broadway's Longacre Theatre, the audience cheers as he finishes his solo, "In Love With You." You can just about feel time stop for him as Levi ("Chuck"), who has been in school and community plays since he was 6-years-old, basks in the moment. He earns it.
He and Krysta Rodriguez ("Smash") are terrific in the season's first new musical, "First Date." They play Aaron and Casey, set up op a blind date by his co-worker, who is also Casey's brother-in-law.
Aaron is a nervous guy, who works in finance. He shows up in a suit and tie and hasn't been on a date in ages. His bride left him under the chuppah (the Jewish version of being ditched at the altar).
Casey is an edgy, hardened serial dater. Aaron has no idea how to act and she is giving him lessons on first dates.
