Argentine writer-director Andrew Sala (“Pantanal”) brings his new film “The Barbaric” to the highly competitive Works in Progress section of Sanfic Industria, and brings with it a heavy contender filled with violence, secrets and the echoes of power. In “The Barbaric,” Nacho leaves an abusive mother in the city to live and work with his estranged father on his cattle ranch in the Pampas plains. Once there, he must learn to find his way within a world of hidden histories and damning lineages.
Ignacio Quesada stars in the film alongside Marcelo Subiotto and rising talent Tamara Rocca — Rocca starred in Agustina San Martín’s debut “To Kill the Beast,” which featured at Guadalajara earlier this year. “The Barbaric” is a co-production between Le Tiro Cine and Nevada Cine.
Variety spoke with Sala ahead of the film’s Sanfic Industria premiere.
A powerful theme in “The Barbaric” is the loss of innocence.

“My Emptiness and I,”“The Barbaric,” and “Saudade Became Home Inside” has all won big at a key industry section at Spain’s Malaga Festival, its Work in Progress, which first shone a light on such titles as “The Platform,” Netflix’s most-watched movie in the U.S. for some days last year.
This year, at the 4th Malaga Work in Progress Awards, which ran May 20 – June 11, all three titles scooped a trio of prizes.
The third feature of Adrián Silvestre, whose “The Objects of Love” took a Fipresci award at 2016’s Seville Festival, “My Emptiness and I” won Arachne, Abycine Lanza, and Rec prizes. The story of Raphi, an androgynous diagnosed with gender dysphoria who begins a gender transition, the film is produced by Javier Pérez Santana, one of the producers behind Agustí Villaronga’s “The Belly of the Sea,” the Malaga Fest main competition winner this year.

Collaboration with San Sebastian Film Festival to foster co-productions with Latin America.
Filmmakers let fly with their pitches on Tuesday (10) at the inaugural Proyecta session organised by Ventana Sur and San Sebastian Film Festival to foster co-productions with Latin America.
Among those under the spotlight are The Jungle, a Swiss project that director Matthias Huser explained was a 1970s-set family drama that morphs via a “feverish” storytelling tone into an experimental film.
The film centres on Sheila, who returns to her childhood home where her dying father tries to convince her to continue his life’s work and protect a patch of jungle.

Madrid — Chilean Manuela Martelli’s “1976,” Argentine Maximiliano Schonfeld’s “Jesús Lopez” and Cuban Marcos Díaz Sosa’s “Obra de choque” have all made the cut of Proyecta, a movie project showcase which represents one of the major innovations at this year’s Ventana Sur, Latin America’s biggest film-tv market and co-production meet.
Though, two weeks and more out from Ventana Sur, buzz still has to build on many new projects in the section, there’s also a good word on Andrew Sala’s “La barbarie,” Natalia Lopez Gallardo’s “Supernova” and Colombian Jennifer Yuribe’s “Sandra” – and curiosity to learn more about Uruguayan Aparicio Garcia’s “Matufia” after his one-of-kind debut earlier this year, the grindhouse rural mobster comedy “La noche que no se repite.”
