Executive producer Steve Cohen has worked with Billy Joel for decades, and if there’s one thing he knows about the legendary musician it’s that Joel is quite reluctant to perform on camera. But the New York native made an exception for a historic milestone in his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden. To celebrate the 100th consecutive sellout at the world’s most famous arena, Cohen and Joel decided to commemorate the occasion with a special event on CBS, “The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden,” the first concert film for Joel since 2010’s “Last Play at Shea.”
“I’m an old school guy, I remember appointment television on Sunday evening and Billy’s the same,” Cohen tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview as part of our Making of “The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden” roundtable panel. So the choice was made to...

The making of the Rolling Stones’ forthcoming album, “Hackney Diamonds,” is explored in a new one-hour TV documentary, “The Stones: Still Rolling,” produced by Fulwell 73 and Mercury Studios. Mercury is looking to sell the project at Mipcom, taking place this week in Cannes.
The TV doc is described as “a rare glimpse of the Rolling Stones as they power forward” that is “told vividly through a first-ever roundtable conversation between the band (members)… giving viewers access to places they have never been.”
Director Paul Dugdale is coming off the recent success of “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium” and “Adele: One Night Only.” Previous Dugdale credits include “Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour” and “Coldplay: Music of the Spheres — Live at River Plate.”

Just four days after wrapping his record-smashing, 330-show “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, legendary musician Elton John received his very first Emmy nomination for headlining Disney+’s “Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.” Given the program’s status as the clear frontrunner in this year’s Best Live Variety Special race, its Grammy, Oscar, and Tony-winning star is well on his way to finally joining the exclusive Egot club.
In order for John to reach this massive milestone, his special will have to win against “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and the latest editions of the Oscars, Tonys, and Super Bowl Halftime Show. Since Rock and all three of said institutions have been honored by the TV academy before, every nominee in this lineup should be considered a serious threat.
To determine what advantages the other contenders might have over “Elton John Live,” let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

Going to an Elton John concert is an experience — fans eagerly play the air piano, parents film the show with their cellphones like feverish teenagers, and attendees wear sequined blazers, studded rhinestone glasses and fuzzy scarves to match the style of the Rocket Man.
All this was captured in Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, which aired live on Disney+ on Nov. 20. The concert took place 47 years after John’s historic 1975 performance at the Los Angeles ballpark that cemented his superstar status.
“The love from the audience, the kindness, the generosity, the loyalty — it’s been like one big party,” John says of the stop on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which wraps July 8 in Stockholm. “It’s like the end of an era, and it’s a happy end to an era.”

A version of this story about “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium” first appeared in the variety/talk section of the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Elton John’s mammoth farewell tour has been going on for five years with Covid interruptions, but it hit a peak of sorts last November with three shows at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, his final American shows ever. The last of those became the first-ever livestream on Disney+, “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” The rock icon spoke about the show along with David Furnish, John’s partner and the executive producer of the special via Rocket Entertainment.
Obviously, Elton, you have many decades of experience making a concert satisfying for the live audience. Does it change things when you have to consider a viewing audience as well?
Elton John: Well, I’ve never done this kind of thing before.

‘Rolling in the Deep’ hitmaker Adele will need to expand the size of her award cabinet as she has scooped a sting of gongs at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy. The 34-year-old chart topping star can add Emmy awards to her endlessly growing list of accolades – to sit nicely alongside her Oscar and multiple Grammy Awards, reports Mirror.co.uk.
On Saturday evening (London time), she was honoured in the USA for her special TV show ‘Adele: One Night Only’ which aired via CBS last year as she prepared to unleash her chart topper, ’30’. Her show was up for five awards – and won all of them.
According to Mirror.co.uk, the on-off special — which saw the singer interact with fans and celebrities while singing a number of her songs — scooped the Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) award; beating Dave Chappelle for his Netflix show ‘The Closer’.

Emmy voters have never been shy about rewarding actors for their work behind the camera, with directing winners in the past ranging from Alan Alda (“M*A*S*H”) to Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”). This year there could be an explosion of such winners. In fact, performers could sweep the comedy, drama, and movie/limited directing races, in addition to potential victories in variety and nonfiction.
Best Comedy Directing: According to our racetrack odds, Bill Hader is the front-runner to win this award for the audacious “Barry” episode “710N.” However, this would be the first directing win for “Barry,” and it’s up against two shows that have won this award before: “Atlanta” and reigning champ “Hacks.” In 2018 Hader lost this award to Amy Sherman-Palladino for the “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” pilot, and in 2019 Hader and Alec Berg lost to Harry Bradbeer for “Fleabag.” In both cases the...

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards returned in full force on Saturday night, with an in-person fête held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The annual awards ceremony, where the DGA recognizes the best film and television directorial efforts of the prior year, had to be held virtually in 2021, as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic were still in full effect.
But this year’s ceremony looked much more like festivities of old. Director Judd Apatow was tapped for hosting duty, having previously had the honor in 2018 and 2020, and more than 800 people were on hand to celebrate the entertainment mediums they cherished.
On the television side, winners were unsurprising, but not undeserved, and most importantly settled the “Succession” direction question. More on that later.

There was little suspicion that Jane Campion would not win the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Achievement for Direction of a Theatrical Feature Film for “The Power of the Dog.” Usually at this stage of the game, with the Oscars two weeks away, director Campion’s Golden Globe statuette would have already been followed by more awards that, in this pandemic-delayed year, are still to come: the Critics Choice and BAFTA awards will be handed out on Sunday, March 13, with the PGA next week.
Academy voters will file their ballots between March 17 and 22. Campion follows last year’s winner Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”) as the third woman to win the DGA award (along with Kathryn Bigelow for “The Hurt Locker”) and the first to be nominated twice, as she is for the Oscar.

The Power of the Dog helmer Jane Campion won the marquee Theatrical Feature Film prize at the 74th annual DGA Awards, which were handed tonight at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. Check out the winners list below.
The win solidifies her as the front-runner for Best Director at the Academy Awards on March 27. Campion won an Original Screenplay Oscar for 1993’s The Piano and was up for Best Director that year.
DGA Awards 2022: Deadline’s Full Coverage
The DGAs are an important bellwether in the Oscar race: Only seven times since the marquee Theatrical Feature Film award’s inception in 1949 has the winner differed from the eventual Oscar winner for Directing. Last year was no exception as Nomadland‘s Chloé Zhao took the DGA’s top film prize en route to her historic Oscar win for Best Director. But in 2020, Sam Mendes won the DGA Award before the Oscar went to Bong Joon-ho.

This weekend is a big one for Oscar watchers, with two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. Sunday marks the biggest night of the year in British film, with the BAFTAs, whose winners often mirror those of the Oscars, taking place. But first, the biggest names in directing came out for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Judd Apatow returned to host the DGAs, which honor outstanding achievement in directing film, television, and commercials.
The feature film nominees at the DGAs were almost identical to the Best Director nominees at the Oscars, with winner Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) competing against Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”. The only difference is that the DGAs swapped in Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”).

Jane Campion has been named the best feature-film director of 2021 by the Directors Guild of America for “The Power of the Dog.” She is the second consecutive female director to win after Chloe Zhao’s victory last year for “Nomadland,” and the third overall after Zhao and Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”), who won in 2010 and was also on hand for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“I’m here because I care about women having voices,” Campion said in her acceptance speech. She had been the prohibitive favorite going into the DGA Awards, just as she is in the Best Director category at the Academy Awards — and the fact that she won even at the end of a marathon DGA ceremony during which one person after another had paid homage to her fellow nominee Steven Spielberg suggests that the rest of awards season will be smooth sailing for her.

The 74th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. (Read our minute-by-minute live blog.) These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2022 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
The all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed eight times over the past seven decades, including in 2019 when Sam Mendes (“1917”) won the DGA but Bong Joon Ho (“Parasite”) claimed the Oscar. Will this year’s winner follow the path of so many prior champs? Reminder: four of the guild’s nominees also reaped Oscar bids: Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”), Steven Spielberg...

After being online the past two years because of Covid, SXSW’s film festival returns with a vibrant in-person edition for its 29th edition, which will run March 11-20, 2022. The lineup revealed Wednesday includes the types of rollercoaster, Hollywood event films for which the Austin-based fest is so good at building buzz.
For anyone jonesing to get their film festival fix in the wake of Sundance’s in-person cancellation, there’s plenty to see at SXSW this spring — and this city couldn’t be more thankful, as the event during pre-pandemic times counts an attendance of 280,000 with a reported $355.9 million positive impact to the local economy.
This is the festival that shot A Quiet Place, Ready Player One and Us out of a cannon to the world, and this year sitting on top of SXSW’s 99 features (of which 76 are world premieres) include Paramount’s Sandra Bullock-Brad Pitt...

On Wednesday, January 26, the Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced its 2022 nominations for television, commercials and documentaries. The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with “Succession” sweeping the drama-series category by landing all five nominations for different episodes.
The last time a single series swept all the nominations in the category was 1983, when “Hill Street Blues” took every slot in a category that at the time only consisted of three nominations. No program, drama or comedy, has ever swept all five nominations in a DGA Awards series category.
In the comedy series category, “Ted Lasso” took three of the five slots, with “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” taking the remaining two.
In the category devoted for TV movies and limited series, the nominees were Barry Jenkins for “The Underground Railroad,” Barry Levinson and Danny Strong for separate episodes of “Dopesick,” Hiro Murai for “Station Eleven” and Craig Zobel for “Mare of Easttown.”

It only rains about one day in October in Los Angeles. That’s what Ben Winston discovered in his research earlier this year as the producer began to scope out the best possible dates to stage an Adele concert special at the Griffith Observatory.
Winston, executive producer of the CBS special “Adele: One Night Only,” which scored more than 10 million viewers in its debut on Sunday, revealed that the carefully laid plans for the special were redrawn quickly when it became clear via weather radar about 72 hours before that it was definitely going to pour on Oct. 25, the day that was originally scheduled for the performance.
Adele was cool with the decision to move the concert up by a day to Oct. 24. For Winston and the crew, that meant two long nights of working around the clock to prepare the space. It also required a mass outreach to the hand-picked guest list of about 300 people.

The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”

Top brass at Miami Dade College’s (Mdc) Miami Film Festival unveiled on Tuesday two films from the line-up of the four-day event in October.
Paul Dugdale’s The Rolling Stones Olé Olé Olé: A Trip Across Latin America (pictured) follows the band on their first road trip across Latin America in more than a decade, culminating in Havana, Cuba.
The film will receive its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
Jim Jarmusch’s Gimme Danger premiered in Cannes and profiles the American punk singer’s time as Stooges frontman, his self-destructive urges and the comebacks.
“With the Stones’ recent historical free concert in Cuba and with Iggy Pop being a beloved resident of our city, both of these films are so eagerly awaited by Miami film and music fans that we could not contain ourselves any longer,“ said festival executive director and director of programming Jaie Laplante.

As we wind down towards the end of the summer, one can’t help but have their minds wander towards what’s next, cinematically speaking. Namely, the fall festival season, which will soon be upon us. We’ve already had the Venice Film Festival announce their lineup, as well as most of the titles playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, but earlier today the New York Film Festival also announced what was playing at their shindig. Now, we mostly know the lay of the festival landscape, and it’s looking very exciting, if I do say so myself. The next few months can’t come soon enough… Below you will see what the Toronto International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and New York Film Festival have announced to date as their entries. Each fest has something interesting and exclusive to offer, while there is some crossover to be found as well.
