New initiatives at Cph:dox include Britdoc’s Good Pitch event, a cultural summit and tech innovation pitches at Propeller Springboard.
Cph:dox has awarded its Dox:award to Last Men in Aleppo, directed by Feras Fayyad and co-directed by Steen Johannessen.
The jury said the film, about volunteers in the war-torn Syrian city, is “a film whose devastating emotional immediacy plunges us into a Shakespearean tragedy of a people striving to retain their humanity in the face of impossible realities.”
The film previously won the grand jury prize in Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary competition.
Special mentions went to Gray House by Austin Lynch and Matthew Booth and The John Dalli Mystery by Jeppe Rønde.
The F:act Award, for a film involving in-depth journalistic investigation, went to Reber Dosky’s Radio Kobani, about a young woman’s struggle to run a local radio station in war-torn northern Syria.

As film nonprofits go, Miami’s Borscht Corp has a different way of doing things. Whether it’s buying a speedboat as the first step in fundraising for a feature, or “canceling” a secret party on social media to throw off the cops, Borscht’s organizational methods are as experimental and visionary as the work it produces. That includes the Borscht Film Festival, a “quasi-yearly” event showcasing films, sculpture, performances, and installations by emerging regional filmmakers.
While Borscht may sound obscure, it lies at the heart of Barry Jenkins’ success. When Borscht co-founder (and “Moonlight” co-producer) Andrew Hevia saw Miami native Jenkins’ first feature, the San Francisco-set “Medicine for Melancholy,” he became determined to bring Jenkins back to Miami to shoot a film. Borscht commissioned a short film from Jenkins, “Chlorophyl,” for the 2011 festival. “That sort of re-awakened [Jenkins] to the city,” said Borscht co-founder Lucas Leyva, an accomplished filmmaker and producer himself.

While we’re a site focused on movies, with December giving us a chance to share with you our thoughts on the best that cinema had to offer in 2016, the last twelve months were pretty great for music too. There’s no simple roadmap for how a conglomerate of SFX Entertainment’s size goes through chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring, and trivial details were bound to fall by the wayside. In the most recent court documents that have surfaced as a result of the company’s legal proceedings, partial lineup details for three of its festivals have made their rounds on social media.
To be specific, some of the headliners for Electric Zoo, Spring Awakening and Mamby On The Beach have been revealed to the public. Artists as big as deadmau5, Hardwell, Claude VonStroke and Tchami have found their way onto the entertainment rosters for the former two events, with the likes of Hannah Wants, Chromeo and Chet Faker on the last.

For its 2016 edition, Bestival has finally announced its theme: The Future. While their announcement video takes cues from the gritty synths of the 80’s, we’re certainly going to get caught inside the bass monsoons of modern production. Playing effortlessly into the year’s theme, Major Lazer, Hot Chip, and The Cure have been announced as headliners for the first wave lineup. However, no future themed event would be complete without the avant garde reaches of Animal Collective, and the accompanying house of Eats Everything, Danny Byrd, Richie Hawtin, TS5, and Skream.
Bestival Curator Rob de Bank says, “Prepare yourselves for a Bestival unlike any other with futuristic new stages, and as ever it’s a broad church of music from every decade and every genre.” Bestival will take place from September 8th to the 11th, and you can find more information on their website. You’re not going to want to miss this one.

After premiering their upcoming album, Painting With, which comes out officially on February 19, 2016, at Bwi Thurgood Marshall Airport this past Wednesday, Animal Collective is now sharing the first single from it, "FloriDada." Boy, this song is a good time. It's like a fun-house-mirror version of Graceland-era Paul Simon. It'll make you miss summer, specifically if you spend your summers in Ridgewood, Queens, conga lines.

Animal Collective Debuts New Album in Bwi Airport; Your Great-Aunt Noreen Is Now Way Cooler Than You
Thousands of weary Thanksgiving travelers got instantly hipper on Wednesday when they accidentally became the first people to hear the new Animal Collective album. The Maryland band surprise-released their new album Floridada by playing it over the speakers of Bwi Thurgood Marshall Airport, the 23rd-busiest airport in North America, during the pre-Thanksgiving rush. (The album will come out for everyone else on November 30.) As Matt Baetz, cousin of AmCo's Avey Tare, wrote on Instagram, the album "can be heard best in the bathrooms, some observation areas, pre-security and the big lounge after security." Until 6 p.m. this random airport is the East Coast's hottest club.

Varèse Sarabande will release the Z For Zachariah – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally August 28 and on CD on September 4, 2015.
The album features the original music composed by Heather McIntosh (Compliance, Manson Family Vacation).
“This is my second time working with Craig Zobel, so our director-composer language is pretty well developed,” explained McIntosh. “With our last collaboration [Compliance], the ensemble was super minimal, super biting, but minimal. This time we wanted to push ourselves with the score and it’s thematic development. Really go for it, you know? Though it is a chamber work, we wanted the sound to be full and orchestral.”
McIntosh had the opportunity to write for organ in a scene where Margot Robbie’s character plays the instrument on screen. “We knew that we needed to get the tone of this right. It needed to feel like a timeless hymn and also be a defining theme for Ann.

Plenty of coverage has come out of the Sundance Film Festival, which wrapped up last week and among our highlights is Wesley Morris's 5-part Sundance Diary for Grantland (Part 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Another Sundance favorite is Manohla Dargis's festival report for The New York Times:
"Every January at the Sundance Film Festival, a movie or two will pop, exciting a cinematic congregation that descends on this resort town praying for the next big thing and at times finding it. Last year the festival got the party started with “Whiplash,” one of its opening selections, and then sent attendees into raptures with “Boyhood.” No single title has dominated this year’s event, yet after a slow start that had some writing off the event before it really got going, good and great movies — from coming-of-age tales like The Diary of a Teenage Girl and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl to documentaries...

No matter how invincible one may think they are, death is inevitable. Thinking about it makes many of us feel this wave of unease. We don’t know when the grim reaper will come pay his uninvited visit. Leaving many of us living in this constant cocoon of fear. People find different ways of coping with it. Some believe in reincarnation, while others have just accepted that they will rot in the ground for eternity.I don’t think the men of Animal Collective or in this case Noah Lennox otherwise known as Panda Bear know how to make a song that sounds […]...

Animal Collective's Panda Bear premiered the music video for one of his newer songs on Adult Swim late Sunday night. Titled "Boys Latin," the song will be featured on the artist's next album, Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper, which is due out mid-January. Encyclopedia Pictura's Isaiah Saxon and Sean Hellfritsch directed the accompanying video, a wonderful phantasmagoria drenched with brilliant colors, stunning animation, peculiar surroundings, and pulsating musical production.

Panda Bear, the chillest dude in Animal Collective (impressive feat!) and the non-cyborg voice heard on Daft Punk’s “Doin’ It Right,” released a new Ep today. The four-song Mr Noah is available to stream on Spotify right now, and it comes in advance of forthcoming full-length album Panda Bear vs. The Grim Reaper, which will be out on January 13. I will go ahead and declare the album’s initial prognosis “very promising”; when I saw him play a set of almost entirely new material last month, it was the least angry I have seen an audience get in a long time about someone not Playing the Hits. (Though, to be fair, I don’t think the two Venn diagram circles representing “Panda Bear fans” and “people who get visibly angry about things” actually touch.) With its big, God’s-pocket-change beat, the first single “Mr Noah” is definitely more percussive...

With every awards season comes a flood of “best of” compilations and top ten lists, but film scores can be tricky in that department. After all, different composers are operating on different levels, each one working toward a separate goal in his or her respective picture. Brian Tyler aims for something propulsive and heroic in Iron Man 3, while Saving Mr. Banks’ score apparently features Thomas Newman doing his best Thomas Newman impersonation. Lists can be tough when scores operate so independently of one another
So without further ado, I present my favorite film scores from 2013. Unranked:
Philomena – Alexandre Desplat
Saying Alexandre Desplat likes himself a mean waltz is like saying Johnny Depp likes himself a little eye makeup: they’re both gross understatements. Scoring Stephen Frears’ loose adaptation of Philomena Lee’s search for the son she was forced to give up at birth, Desplat makes his affinity abundantly clear with the title track,...

Co-directed by Mark Peranson and Raya Martin, La última película is several things at once: a documentary pretending to be fiction (and vice versa), a reflexively cinephillic ode to materiality, a deconstruction and/or exploration of disparate forms, a meditation on the (false) apocalypse of the world and cinema, and an (experimental) comedy. Its one-line synopsis is as follows: "a famous American filmmaker travels to the Yucatán to scout locations for his last movie. The Mayan Apocalypse intercedes." Inspired by Dennis Hopper's The Last Movie and its subsequent documentary cousin The American Dreamer (both 1971), La última película taps into a sort of artistic freedom of spirit, an all-too-rare ecstasy of moviemaking-as-adventuring. It is a manifesto by implication for the liberation of film from convention, and as thought and life. Starring American independent filmmaker Alex Ross Perry (The Color Wheel, Impolex) and Gabino Rodríguez (Greatest Hits, Together) as the filmmaker protagonist's Mexican guide,...

It's now four years since Gaspar Noe's last feature, the headfuck "Enter The Void," but he's been keeping busy. The director has been hanging with Nicolas Winding Refn, and shot videos for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as well as Animal Collective. And his next music related venture finds him back behind the camera, with even more provocative results. Noe is the unlikely photographer for the cover of the debut album for pop starlet Sky Ferreira. The 21 year-old singer is entering adulthood by going topless on the cover of her new album Night Time, My Time. It kinda looks like a Calvin Klein ad from the 1990s or something, but we suppose that's the point, and it'll drum up the usual controversy from conservative types that will help promote the album. But it seems Ferreira is on a bit of a movie kick, as the video for the single "You're Not The One,...

The electronic noise-makers are readying to hit the road again soon, though, and have dropped a new music video to help promote the stint and their wildly variant new album "Centipede Hz." Los Angeles — It's tempting to say Daft Punk has gone Hollywood.
The influential French electronic duo crafted its first film score, for "Tron: Legacy," three years ago and are now releasing a well-financed, smartly hyped pop album featuring what they call an ensemble cast of contemporary singers and veteran musicians.
There's long been a show-biz bent to the work of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, who for the last 13 years have hidden their faces in public appearances by wearing robot helmets and costumes. Bangalter compares the mystique-building masks – echoed by musicians including Deadmau5 and Mf Doom – to an ever-evolving comic book superhero who starts as a side story "then maybe 50 years later it becomes like a big franchise movie in Hollywood."
Yet Daft Punk's new album "Random Access Memories" isn't the special effects-filled summer blockbuster you might expect. The group that helped popularize electronic dance music in the...

The lead-up to Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" has proven the robots and Columbia Records to be masters of hype. There were rumors upon rumors, most of which turned out to be true in some weird and twisted way (case in point: Daft Punk was at Coachella, but just to walk around in their civvies and watch the crowd react to a trailer for "Get Lucky").
But building up expectations often comes with plenty of risks. When the album arrives in stores on May 17, it will easily be the most-hyped record of the year. A few critics got an early listen of the project, and though most admit they need to spend more time with the album, here's what they have to say.
Over at MTV, James Montgomery writes that the record "is not a reinvention so much as it is a revolution; their attempt to liberate themselves from dance music entirely.

A few months ago a programme aired on ITV called Superstar. If, like the majority of the British viewing public, it passed you by, let me quickly get you up to speed: the reality show was the brain child of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, the hugely successful composer behind West End smashes such as Cats, Starlight Express and Evita who has seen a late career resurgence as the self-appointed Simon Cowell of musical theatre.
Following Webber's similarly successful recruitment shows for productions of The Wizard Of Oz and The Sound Of Music, Superstar saw contestants compete to win the title role of Jesus in a new production of Lloyd Webber's rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, alongside Sporty Spice as Mary Magdalene and a newly unemployed Chris Moyles as Herod.

Paul McCartney and Mumford & Sons are among the headliners for the 2013 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn.
The four-day festival, held on a rural 700-acre farm, always features an eclectic roster, but the June 13-16 event is even more varied than usual.
Returnees Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers also hold down a headliner spot. Then things get a little crazy with R&B star R. Kelly, alternative queen Bjork and Wu-Tang Clan celebrating its 20th anniversary. Wilco, Pretty Lights, The Lumineers, The National, The xx, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Nas and Zz Top also top the list announced Tuesday by "Weird Al" Yankovic via Bonnaroo's YouTube channel.
Tickets go on sale at noon Est on Saturday.
McCartney, the former Beatle and recent frontman of Sirvana, will be making his first appearance at the event.

Gaspar Noé fans were a bit unfairly dismissive when earlier this month the director's video for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' "We No Who U R" dropped. Many wanted more of the director's trademark kinetic camerawork and less wandering around the woods following a shadow, and so a few weeks later, Noé has pulled the strobe lights back out of the supply closet. Animal Collective continue to promote their latest album, Centipede Hz, and now comes the second official video, the Noé-directed "Applesauce." If you have epilepsy you may want to look away or make sure you've taken your meds. The video, "intended to be viewed in complete darkness," goes hard with strobing colors as a model provocatively eats some fruit, in a spot that borrows elements from visual artist Paul Sharits' 1968 short film “N:o:t:h:i:n:g,” which you can see excerpts from below. And yeah, you'll quickly get the.

Animal Collective's music video for "Applesauce" is directed by Gaspar Noé and features a long, close shot of a model eating a peach in the dark in front of flashing multi-colored lights. According to a release, "It is intended to be viewed in complete darkness for maximum effect." Taking this video into a dark closet (with at least three days of dirty laundry piled up), it turns into a video of a long, close shot of a model eating a peach in the dark in front of flashing multi-colored lights. Got a bright idea for a film, a comic or even a hi-tech watch? For many, Kickstarter could be the answer – and now it's launched in Britain
Time was, in the olden days, that in order to create a video game, or fund a film or album, or make a comic, you needed a generous and deep-pocketed patron, or a corporation behind you which thought there was something – profit, in other words – in it for them. There might have even been a grant from an arts body somewhere. Remember them?
Crowdfunding, where large numbers of people donate small sums of money to a project, has changed that. Kickstarter is not the first online funding site for creative projects – ArtistShare was launched in 2003 to enable musicians to bypass record labels, and was followed by other sites such as IndieGogo – but it has gained the most traction and attention.

Canadian electro-pop star Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) was recently forced off the road. "Hey guys, so sorry 4 the cancelled shows. im having trouble w hearing loss, tinnitus & am trying 2 stay away from loud music 4 a bit," she tweeted after cancelling a string of Canadian dates. A few days later she scrapped her entire European tour. "It's depressing to cancel more shows, but we have to cancel all Grimes dates in Europe due to health issues :( im having hearing problems and im supposed to limit my exposure to loud noise for as long as possible."
Grimes is 24.
Hearing loss is something that unfortunately can't be healed over any period of time and is a risk that musicians and concertgoers alike take every time they attend a show, record an album or even just listen to music.

Microsoft on Monday morning officially unveiled a promising new music service for PCs, tablets, laptops and the Xbox gaming console called Xbox Music. And in the grand tradition of late-night games of Risk, it appears to be taking on competitors from every direction possible.
With Xbox Music, Microsoft has rolled the dice and attacked -- all at once, cannons blazing, horses whinnying! -- all-you-can-eat streaming services like Spotify and Rdio, music recommendation services like Pandora, paid music download services like iTunes, and cloud locker services like Google Music and Amazon Cloud Drive.
It's an effort, Microsoft spokespeople have declared, to create the first truly all-in-one music service on the planet. Check out this chart, which Microsoft cooked up to show just exactly what they're attempting to accomplish:

It's been four years since Animal Collective swam close to mainstream with their breakout album Meriweather Post Pavilion. The poppy departure landed the experimental Baltimore band on countless "Best of 2009" lists, and led to a memorably weird spot on Late Night With David Letterman. It also gave the four members the chance to lay low after recording their ninth album. They took their longest break yet, spun off into solo projects, and generally made fans worry that the group was kaput.
But far from ending things, Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist went old school, getting together in a single space to write their next album instead of collaborating from different ports around the world the way they always had.
The result of their convergence is the space-themed Centipede Hz, which released yesterday. Depending on what you read, the 11 new tracks are either the last piece of the puzzle...

It's Sunday afternoon, or: your last chance to read all that stuff you meant to read last week before Monday brings a new deluge of things you will want to read. Below, some of our recommendations: "The Making of Azealia Banks," by Zach Baron (Spin): The Harlem native on moving to L.A., disassociating herself from "the rap game," and what — if anything — it means to be famous at 21 years old. "Animal Collective," by Mark Richardson (Pitchfork): The band sits down for a pre-Centipede Hz release interview about growing up and moving to Mars. "Angel on Horseback," by Evgenia Peretz (Vanity Fair): The Help's breakout star on her busy 2011 — she acted in six films, including Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life — her tendency to tear up, and her return to the theater.
