While drive-in theaters remain virtually the only theaters still open in the U.S. (and a good place to see a new release like haunted-tree horror “The Wretched”), distributors are getting creative about how to release indie and foreign films.
“Jackie” director Pablo Larraín’s latest, “Ema,” debuts for free on Mubi for one day, teasing a future fall theatrical release planned by Music Box. And Oscilloscope uses the emerging virtual cinema model to debut fiction-doc hybrid “The Infiltrators,” in which undocumented activists find a way to liberate deportation-bound detainees from inside a detention center. Plus, Netflix subscribers get (at least) six original features to justify the subscription.
Here are all the new releases, with excerpts from reviews and links to where you can watch them.

A relatively modest, low-key tale about global refugee issues that are usually portrayed in a higher dramatic key, “The Flood” makes a somewhat underwhelming first impression. But it gradually overcomes that to arrive at a potent (if still quiet) cumulative impact, bolstered by strong performances from leads Ivanno Jeremiah and Lena Headey. A nonstarter on theatrical home turf nearly a year ago, the feature should do better in home formats, with Samuel Goldwyn launching release to Stateside VOD platforms on May 1.
Helen Kingston’s screenplay initially seems too arid and schematic, as Headey’s grimly impersonal English immigration officer Wendy interviews newly-arrived asylum seeker Haile (Jeremiah). He says he can’t return to his native Eritrea because, “They will kill me.” But the flashbacks detailing his flight feel too sketchy as explanation, with gaps larger than our imaginations can easily fill in.

Lena Headey sat for 30 minutes in front of a nearly sold-out audience at Laemmle Santa Monica on Feb. 29 fielding questions and offering answers (from amusing to sobering) following a screening of her new film, the intimate refugee drama The Flood, written by Helen Kingston and directed by Anthony Woodley.
It proved to be a weighty conversation, understandably so considering the film’s subject matter, but the real shocker was that not one query centered on Game of Thrones, the show that gave Headey global fame thanks to eight seasons playing Cersei Lannister. In The Flood, Game of Thrones star Lena Headey plays a hardened and deeply troubled immigration officer who is entrusted with handling a sensitive asylum case. Directed by Anthony Woodley and executive produced by Headey herself, the film offers a frank account of the real human cost behind the refugee crisis in Europe.
When he is apprehended armed with a knife attempting to enter the UK illegally in the back of a truck, Eritrean refugee Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is arrested and treated as a terrorism risk. With increased media interest in Haile’s story, immigration chief Philip (played by Game of Thrones star Iain Glen) enlists the help of Wendy (Headey), one of his most efficient officers who is known for her swift and cold dealings with asylum applications.
Haile’s story is revealed in flashbacks as he is questioned by an increasingly irritated Wendy. Seemingly unmoved at first by...

In his latest interview/podcast, host Stuart Wright talks with director Anthony Woodley about his refugee crisis feature The Flood, which is widely available now via Curzon Cinemas and Curzon On Demand.
Wendy (Lena Headey), a hardened immigration officer is offered a high-profile asylum case, judged on her ability to quickly and clinically reject applicants. Through her interrogation, she must uncover whether Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is lying and has a more sinister reason for seeking asylum. We follow Haile on his perilous 5,000 kilometre journey over oceans, across borders, and amidst the flurry of the Calais Jungle to find solace and safety in the UK. But now he must cross the final hurdle. Based on multiple true stories, The Flood is a thoughtful and timely reflection on the humanity within the refugee crisis.

Lena Headey plays an immigration official overseeing the case of an Eritrean migrant whose capture at Dover sparks tabloid fury
Here is a well-meaning and honestly acted drama from screenwriter Helen Kingston and director Anthony Woodley about migrants seeking asylum in the UK. But it feels glib, programmatic and contrived, particularly the ending, and almost at times like a bien-pensant image of how things are behind the uncaring newspaper headlines.
Haile (Ivanno Jeremiah) is a migrant from Eritrea who has been captured at Dover in circumstances that have led him to be demonised by the tabloids as a possible violent terrorist. Wendy (Lena Headey) is the immigration official who has to assess his case, while dealing with personal problems of her own, and under pressure from her harassed boss Philip (Iain Glen) who is in turn being leant on by the Home Office. As Wendy questions Haile in the interview room,...

There’s a distinct lack of compassion in modern society, and it’s this very notion that was the topic of conversation when we sat down with director Anthony Woodley, and actor Ivanno Jeremiah to mark the release of The Flood.
This moving drama focuses in on the journey on a refugee, played by Jeremiah, vying to start a new, safer life on British soil, and his subsequent interview process with the hardened immigration officer (Lena Headey) who stands in his way. We discuss what it was like filming amongst real refugees, and why people in the UK, and America for example, are finding so little empathy for these poor people fleeing their war-torn countries in a bid to survive. We also get on the subject of Game of Thrones, as not only does this film star Headey and Iain Glen, but Jeremiah has landed a role in the forthcoming prequel…...

"You understand, when you are trying to cross borders, the only people that will help you... are dangerous people." Curzon Cinemas in the UK has debuted an official trailer for a fascinating indie drama titled The Flood, from director Anthony Woodley. The film presents an intriguing, dramatic look at the challenges of immigration and the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. The story follows a "hardened immigration officer" named Wendy, and an asylum seeker named Haile who has traveled great distances to reach the UK hoping to stay there. Lena Headey stars, with Ivanno Jeremiah playing Haile, and a cast including Iain Glen, Arsher Ali, Mandip Gill, Amira Ghazalla, Jack Gordon, and Christopher Sciueref. This looks so much more thought-provoking and compelling than you're probably expecting it to be, and doesn't seem to be pandering to any one audience. I recommend watching the trailer, it might convince you to see this film.

Curzon Artificial Eye has released the official UK trailer and poster for ‘The Flood’ starring Lena Headey.
Set in France and the UK at a time when politics are more divisive than ever, and lines between refugees and terrorists are intentionally blurred by politicians, the filmmakers wanted to highlight the difference between the extraordinary and perilous journey people are making with the slow, clinical, and bureaucratic response around the world. The filmmakers researched heavily, basing the script on actual stories, including interviews with ex-Home Office officials, for a measured and objective look at issues that permeate the news regularly.
Director Anthony Woodley, writer Helen Kingston, and producer Luke Healy all spent time volunteering in the Calais Jungle and felt compelled to make a film that was truthful to the refugee experience. The result is a poignant, measured piece of filmmaking, setting itself apart as one of the few feature narrative...

Lena Headey on Immigration Drama ‘The Flood’: ‘Maybe It Will Grow a Bit More Compassion’ (Exclusive)
Lena Headey wants her new movie, “The Flood,” to further understanding of immigration crises around the world. She plays Wendy in the film, a British immigration officer deciding the fate of an asylum seeker. “What I hope, personally, is we change 10 minds, or people reconsider how they feel about someone who has lost everything,” she told Variety. “Or maybe it will grow a bit more compassion, understanding, curiosity or bravery.”
Helen Kingston’s script for “The Flood” draws on real-life stories after her, producer Luke Healy and director Anthony Woodley spent time volunteering in Calais, France, a refugee hot spot. Kingston’s work is “a really smart take on what’s happening,” Headey said, adding that the film deals with its subject matter without preaching or being overtly political. “I think it’s a very quiet, strong bit of cinema and it’s really honest about what’s happening and...

With civilisation on the brink of extinction, there’s only one way to ensure survival and that’s kill or be killed. Take to the skies in a stolen 747 where cabin fever becomes reality, fuel runs low and tempers flare. Everyone is a potential threat, isolation is key but there’s no escape at 30,000 feet…
The Carrier is an expert blend of suspense, horror and drama playing out in a welcome addition to the outbreak genre. With the film due for release next week we have a brief interview with the director Anthony Woodley (Outpost 11), and a cool clip from the film…
What would you say is your worst traveling / aeroplane experience?
I worked on a major motion picture last year and we flew to Austria in a small plane we were using for the shoot. Over the Alps, we flew into a snow storm. Everything outside was just white.

(Screened at the 2013 Raindance Film Festival) “Outpost 11” is a strange one. Marking the feature debut of British writer director Anthony Woodley, the film has been pushed as a horror, and as recalling John Carpenter’s classic “The Thing” and the early works of David Cronenberg. This, to an extent, does it a disservice, as it’s really much more of an eclectic offering, set in an alternative, unspecified World War II era past with Europe locked in combat with the ‘Prussian war machine’. The film follows three soldiers stationed in an isolated listening post deep in the arctic, charged with monitoring enemy transmissions and maintaining a mysterious device called the omega machine. To pass the time, Commander Mason (Luke Healy, “100 Degree Below Zero”) hunts in the wilderness, while stern veteran Graham (Billy Clarke, “Hunger”) torments new recruit Albert (Joshua Mayes-Cooper). Their dull peace is shattered one day when a warning light starts flashing,...

Outpost 11, the first feature film for director Anthony Woodley, is science-fiction, pure and simple, and I went into the feature with little-to-no knowledge of what it was about or what to expect.
The film stars Billy Clarke (Hunger), Luke Healy (The Football Factory), Joshua Mayes-Cooper and, with a small role, Bernard Hill (Lord of the Rings). The cast, though mostly people I wasn’t much aware of prior to seeing this, are all very good and their performances are sturdy. Billy Clarke, who plays Graham, is particularly excellent in his role. Unsympathetic and sometimes just plain contemptible, he is a bizarre character that we discover more about as the film proceeds.

WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films
Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

Tagline: "Air Travel Just Got Safer." A few details are emerging for Megatopia Films' Artificial Horizon. This indie feature recently secured funding to put the film into pre-production, via a Kickstarter campaign. This sci-fi thriller involves a global pandemic, caused by bacteria which is resistant to antibiotics. And, the film will begin shooting in late 2013. Cast and crew are still being secured. To expand, Artificial Horizon focuses on eight survivors. They are flying high in a 747, but what lies below? A plague is running rampant and if the survivors land, they will then be exposed to the virus. A concept poster for the film has been released (above). The graphic suggests that the film will incorporate zombies or zombie like antagonists. Overall, the film brings together several exciting elements and it will be interesting to see what director Anthony Woodley (Outpost 11) has cooked up next. Status: Principle Photography Q4, 2013 Director: Anthony.

Tagline: "Bound by duty; broken by fear." Outpost 11 is a British film that is currently in post-production. The film blends sci-fi with elements of psychology. Three soldiers at a "remote listening post" (Screen) begin to lose their grip on reality as days begin to blend into each other. Isolation does not help the matter and soon, characters are turning on each other. As well, the setting for the film takes place in an alternate world, where steam power fuels the world. Cabin fever is taken to the nth degree in the film's first poster and trailer. Both previews are hosted here. Director/writer: Anthony Woodley. Cast:: Bernard Hill, Luke Healy, Joshua Mayes-Cooper, and Billy Clarke. The second trailer for Outpost 11 is here: *partly an homage to films such as The Thing, How I Ended this Summer and Videodrome. British stage and screen veteran Bernard Hill, who played King Theoden of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the ship's captain in Titanic, is to appear in independent sci-fi film Outpost 11.
He plays a character called Cranleigh. Leading the cast are Luke Healy, Joshua Mayes-Cooper and Billy Clarke, with support from Graham Till. Several production stills from the project are included here, along with the trailer.
Set in an alternative past where steam power still rules the world, Outpost 11 is the story of three soldiers manning a remote listening post in the Arctic Circle.
One day the warning light goes off unexpectedly and their world is plunged into chaos. Albert (Mayes-Cooper), Mason (Healy) and Graham (Clarke) must fight "isolation, madness and arctic spiders" to survive.
The story being set in a steampunk past makes a refreshing change from the usual post-apocalyptic future found in so many recent Hollywood releases.
