Ana Lungu’s debut feature film, Self-Portrait of a Dutiful Daughter (2015), is both in its tone and form firmly grounded in the Romanian New Wave. However, it’s perspective is something new—offering a twenty-something, educated woman’s point of view, trying to distance herself from the mores of the Romanian bourgeois environment, her parents expectations, and the general role in society ascribed to her as a woman. Written by Ana Lungu
Directed by Ana Lungu
Romania, 2015
Cristiana (played by Elena Popa) is thirty years old. She has been brought up in a “proper”, bourgeois Romanian family. She is a PhD student of Earthquake Engineering and divides her time between her married lover, her newly-owned apartment which her parents have recently moved out and into which she now wants to bring a dog, and engaging in endless quasi-philosophical conversations with her close friends, Alex and Michelle. Her professor likes to give lengthy monologues on earthquake statistics, which she listens to duly. In her eagerly awaited rendezvous, her statuesque lover Dan (Emilian Oprea) likes to comment on the masculinity of her name and reserves the right to define “beautiful” in their relationship. Finally living by herself, she rebelliously wants a dog while her father forbids it. Facing opposition, prohibitions and directives for living her...

Locarno's new artistic director Olivier Pere is certainly sticking to some of the trends he helped support while at Cannes, this year's Locarno's slate features a record number for Romanian films than in the previous editions. The 63rd Festival del Film Locarno 2010 will see first time feature film works from Marian Crișan (Morgen) and Bogdan George Apetri's “Periferic” (“Outbound”) - both will compete in The “Concorso internazionale” (International Competition), among other World of International premieres of 18 feature films from all over the globe. The “Concorso Cineasti del presente” (Filmmakers of the Present Competition) hosts a 64 minute-long movie, directed by Ana Lungu and Ana Szel – “The Belly of the Whale” (“Burta balenei “– original title).
