Networks are heavily promoting their night of Iowa caucus coverage, with reporters fanned out across the state and, throughout the day on Monday, anchors doing their best to stir up excitement in the waiting game before voting actually begins.
But as large as the investment is for broadcast and cable networks, the coverage is facing heavy competition on the night of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Fox has the Emmys, and ABC has what is likely to draw the biggest audience, the NFL playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Broadcast networks are sticking to their regular schedules with the possibility of news updates, leaving the ongoing coverage to their streaming and cable channels.

The Iowa caucus on Monday will be like no other —- and that was apparent from the start, well before subzero weather raised doubts about turnout, stymied campaigns in the final sprint and left an army of reporters and consultants seeking the warm refuge of Des Moines hotel lobbies.
The expectation is that Donald Trump will win —- but like past caucuses, that will only tell part of the story. In the race for second place, rival Nikki Haley is looking for momentum for a potential victory next week in New Hampshire, and Ron DeSantis wants to defy pundits who have written him off.
The release of the final poll before the caucuses on Saturday night —- one sponsored by the Des Moines Register, NBC News and Mediacom —- helped set expectations for the results, with much coverage framed on whether candidates exceed or under perform. The poll showed Trump...

Washington — President Donald Trump defended an administration policy that has seen almost 2,000 children separated from their parents at the border, amid increased media coverage that included images of kids housed in indoor warehouse spaces behind chain-link fences.
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, appearing in the White House briefing room, told reporters that the problem was loopholes in the law that prevented the ability to detain full family units.
“Those who criticize the implementation of our laws offer only one countermeasure — open borders,” she said, adding that there is a “lot of misinformation” as to what the Department of Homeland Security is doing.
“This is a very serious issue that has resulted after years and years of Congress not taking action,” she said.
Four former first ladies have condemned the policy, the most recent being Rosalynn Carter, who called it “disgraceful and a shame to our country.”

Santorum Responds To ‘Bullsh*t’ Outburst On CNN: Romney Campaign ‘Fed The Line To All The Reporters’
Rick Santorum's interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Monday gave the Gop hopeful a chance to address his outburst at The New York Times' Jeff Zeleny. Santorum reiterated that a conservative who hasn't had a confrontation with the Nyt isn't "worth their salt" — and went further, contending that Mitt Romney's campaign "fed the line to all the reporters."...

The New York Times got a big story out of Rick Santorum this weekend, but not necessarily in the way they expected. Would you guys quit distorting what I'm saying...quit distorting my words, if I see it, it's bullshit!" Santorum erupted. "Come on, man! What are you doing?"...

Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich.Just as soon as Newt Gingrich returned from his Aegean cruise, his campaign staff departed for greener—by which we mean more successful at fund-raising—pastures. New York Times political reporter Jeff Zeleny asked Gingrich about the choice to suspend his nascent campaign for two weeks to sail around the Greek Isles. “To have a major breakthrough in policy, you have to be able to stop and think,” the candidate told him. Gingrich has a bizarre preoccupation with vacations.
