Killed by the largest landslide in recorded history (18 May 1980) when a 5.1-magnitude earthquake triggered the eruption of Mount St. Helens.
Was one of only three people allowed inside the Red Zone (evacuated and prohibited area) around Mount St. Helens.
Was last seen in his home on the evening of May 17, 1980. Last seen by neighboring property owners allowed into evacuated Red Zone with police escort.
Founded the Mount St. Helens Lodge located on the shore of Spirit Lake in 1929. Ran the lodge until its destruction on May 18, 1980.
