There’s a grand lineage of cinematic donkeys out there – from Eddie Murphy’s Shrek wisecracker, to The Banshees Of Inisherin’s scene-stealing Jenny, to the horrifying donkey-boys of Pinocchio, Winnie The Pooh’s pal Eeyore, and beyond. But now, get ready to fall in love with Eo – a donkey who’s not a mere supporting character, but the central player in his own story. Eo, from Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski, is a beautifully-shot and powerfully emotional drama that recently bagged an Oscar nomination for International Feature Film, telling the story of a donkey who moves away from his life in the circus, and ends up on an epic journey across the forests and landscapes of Europe. Before the film hits UK and Irish cinemas on 3 February, watch an exclusive clip here:

“The donkey is cute, but this is not a Disney movie,” said Jonathan Sehring, the former IFC Films head whose young distribution outlet Sideshow, with Janus Films, presents Jerzy Skolimowski’s Cannes Jury Prize winning Eo at two NYC theaters this weekend. “We launched Sideshow for great movies that would otherwise get overlooked to give them the best release that they can possibly get,” he told Deadline.
Eo hits the big screen a year after the partners opened Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, tenderly leading the three hour-long Japanese film about a bereft theater director overseeing a production of Uncle Vanya through a decorated awards season expansion that garnered four Oscar nominations, a win for Best International Feature and some solid box office coin.
“It’s not something we invented. It was a very traditional platform release for, what we hoped when we acquired it, would be a critically acclaimed film.

Jerzy Skolimowski’s “Eo” has picked up the Arab Critics’ Awards for European Film at the Cairo International Film Festival. The ceremony, presented by European Film Promotion and Arab Cinemal Center, took place on Thursday at the Cairo Opera house.
“Eo,” about a liberated circus donkey, is also Poland’s foreign film Oscars entry. Lorenzo Zurzolo and Isabelle Huppert star in the film, which is set for a Middle East and North Africa released early next year.
“I am incredibly happy that ‘Eo’ has been appreciated by the Arab Critics’ Circle as it must mean that my simple story of a donkey has moved people’s hearts across different cultures,” said Skolimowski. “It is especially important to me that this plea for empathy for animals seems so universal. How do you write music for a wandering donkey in Eo? Composer Pawel Mykietyn didn’t take the responsibility lightly.
“First off this donkey survived,” the Polish composer told the audience, with the help of an interpreter, at Deadline’s Sound & Screen awards-season event. “I hope I don’t disturb the movie by music. … Sometimes it’s difficult to know what a donkey feels.”
Eo, by Polish veteran Jerzy Skolimowski and submitted by Poland to this year’s Oscar International Feature race, is a vision of modern Europe as seen through the eyes of a a precious mule. “In the movie, the donkey is in a lot of different places, the donkey meets different people,” said Mykietyn. “There are different situations, some tragic, sometimes funny. I tried to follow the situation, follow the emotion … add some color.”

The words “Bressonian joy” are rarely deployed, but from Cannes onward we’ve heard almost exclusively great things about Jerzy Skolimowski’s Eo, a Balthazar spin that earned the 84-year-old director a Jury Prize and seemingly endless best-of-the-fest listings. Needless to say the wait for its opening has been felt.
Ahead of a November 18 release from Janus and Sideshow—their first since Drive My Car—we have a trailer for Skolimowski’s film, though I’d suggest holding out just a bit longer before seeing much else. As David Katz said in his review, “The barrier of language and gulf of understanding between man and animal is the subject of the quite wondrous Eo, a true surprise from the great Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski, now enjoying his mid-80s. It is adapted—freely inspired may be a better term—from Robert Bresson’s iconic 1966 film Au Hasard Balthazar; from Eo...

Polish auteur’s Jerzy Skolimowski’s latest film, Eo, which follows the adventures of a mule who is stubborn and wise and free-spirited, has been chosen by Poland as its contender for best international feature at the 2023 Academy Awards.
Eo debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and the Soundtrack Award. The Polish film will also have a North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, before going onto to the New York Film Festival.
Skolimowski (Deep End, Moonlighting) directed the drama about a nomadic gray donkey named Eo. After leaving a traveling circus, Eo begins a trek across the Polish and Italian countryside, experiencing cruelty and kindness in equal measure.
On those travels, the donkey meets a cast of characters played by Lorenzo Zurzolo and Isabelle Huppert, among others. Ewa Piaskowska and Skolimowski wrote and produced the movie.

Photo: 'Under The Amalfi Sun' When sitting at home on any given evening with nothing to do, nowhere to be, and no other shows to binge, one might scour the handful of streaming services to find a film that seems as if it’ll provide a pleasant experience to the viewer. They might find it on HBO Max, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, or any other platform, but eventually, they’ll find it. That film may not necessarily be perfect, it may even have a handful of problems with its characters and writing, but it checks enough boxes to give the viewer a decent and relaxing ninety-plus minutes. Its vibe, tone, and aesthetic are the main appeals of the film as opposed to the structural components such as story and character. ‘Under the Amalfi Sun’ is one of those films. After staging a vastly scaled-down version in 2020, organizers of the Cannes Film Festival brought buzz back to the Croisette last year as the industry dipped its toes into the annual French gathering. As the 75th edition kicked off May 17, many in the business are all-in on the in-person experience and there are plenty of completed films for sale.
Mubi took an early lead in acquisitions, scooping up Léa Mysius’s sophomore film “The Five Devils” and Park Chan-wook’s mystery “Decision to Leave” in recent weeks. Other films arriving with distribution include Brett Morgen’s David Bowie doc “Moonage Daydream,” from Neon. A24 has five films premiering at Cannes, including Alex Garland’s “Men” and Claire Denis’ “The Stars at Noon.”
Still up for grabs are films like “Hunt,” the directorial debut of “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, and Arnaud Desplechin’s “Brother and Sister.”

Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize winner “Eo” has been acquired by Sideshow and Janus Films for North American distribution rights, the companies announced Wednesday.
Sideshow and Janus Films are planning a fall 2022 theatrical release, which was produced by Ewa Piaskowska and Jerzy Skolimowski (who also wrote the screenplay). The film is presented by Skopia Film and Jeremy Thomas. Eileen Tasca is the Italian co-producer. Jeremy Thomas is the film’s executive producer.
The film shows a vision of modern Europe as seen through the eyes of a donkey. Here’s the logline: “The world is a mysterious place when seen through the eyes of an animal. Eo, a gray donkey with melancholic eyes, meets good and bad people on his life’s path, experiences joy and pain, endures the wheel of fortune as it randomly turns his luck into disaster and his despair into unexpected bliss.
