Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to “His Three Daughters,” starring Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon, following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Netflix had no comment on terms of the deal, which is reported to be for just under $7 million.
Written, directed and edited by Azazel Jacobs, the film presents a tense, captivating, and touching portrait of family dynamics with Lyonne, Olsen and Coon starring as sisters who converge after their father’s health declines.
In his review, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the drama as “funny, moving and true,” with its trio of lead actors delivering “superb” performances that “work together like a piece of chamber music.”
He wrote: “The film is a finely observed, winningly unsentimental memory play about three adult sisters who have come together to take care of their father, who is dying of cancer and approaching his final days.

Netflix has acquired Azazel Jacobs’ sisterhood drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne and bowed at the Toronto Film Festival.
The trio play estranged sisters forced to reunite when their father becomes seriously ill. The family drama sees the sisters converge as their father’s health steadily declines.
The deal, with a price tag north of $6 million, according to sources, represents Netflix’s third acquisition out of Toronto after the streaming giant picked up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, for around $11 million after a world premiere at the festival. Netflix also nabbed the worldwide rights to Lucy Walker’s documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa after it was presented as a work-in-progress screening at TIFF.
After Toronto Netflix also paid around $20 million for the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man, which bowed in Venice and stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona.

Writer-director Azazel Jacobs has made a couple of indie pictures I really loved. French Exit gave Michelle Pfeiffer one of her meatiest roles in years and she ran with it in a delicious Paris-set tale. He also provided Debra Winger and Tracy Letts with terrific roles in the sophisticated The Lovers. And now Jacobs shows once again he knows how to attract top actors with well-written characters in the intimate drama His Three Daughters, which stars Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne.
The trio play sisters gathering in the New York City apartment where their father (Jay O. Sanders) is down the hall (unseen for most of the film) and near death. Jacobs purposely wants the confined atmosphere to let the dialogue rise to the top. They have arrived to spend his final days with him, but also to renew their own dysfunctional dynamic. Hannah Waddingham made her Super Bowl commercial debut during today’s telecast of the NFL’s championship game.
The “Ted Lasso” star is featured in a spot for cash-back shopping service Rakuten. She plays a villainous (and glamorous) character that could easily appear in a “James Bond” film — she has a hairless cat named Leonardo! — in a high-stakes poker game who loses to a Rakuten user. The 60-second spot, directed by Matt Aselton, was shot at Hatfield House outside of London.
“They came to me because they wanted a very specific kind of type,” Waddingham told Variety. “They’d obviously seen me in ‘Ted Lasso’ and also what I’m like in real life. I like that fact that it is their first foray into Super Bowl commercials and mine as well. We kind of went hand-in-hand together and we all wanted to create something that was pretty epic and movie-like.

If there’s one genre I love as much as horror it’s heist movies, in particular the kind of quirky, independent, often direct to DVD movies. Over the past few years there have been some great indie-comedy heist movies: films like Flypaper, How to Rob a Bank and The Maiden Heist – all of which I’d easily consider my favourites of the genre (Flypaper would even make my all-time favourite films list too).
And what do they have in common?
Well they all successfully balance quirky, offbeat comedy with traditional “heist-film” storytelling. They also all feature a cool and charismatic cast. And surprisingly Lying and Stealing follows suit, whilst also feeling very much like the more “glamorous” more-romantic crime caper films of the 60s.

“Lying and Stealing” is a heist movie of a sort mostly seen in the 1960s, when movies like “Charade” found ingenious thieves played by glamorous stars preying upon the priceless knickknacks of the super-rich on the Riviera, and so forth. Such enterprises usually involved not just A-list personalities but lavish production values — all the better to realize that fantasy side of a decade that was stuck closer to Playboy Magazine and hotel-lounge luxury than to Free Love. If there was love (or at least sex) in these movies, it was going to be expensive.
But Matt Aselton’s film does not boast anyone so chic — or bankable — as Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Nor does it lay on the splashy wish-fulfillment settings, though the movie does cough up a few locations at which a homeowner might credibly own an artwork worth more than most of us earn in a lifetime.

"If Sutton were alive today, he wouldn't be robbing banks - he'd be robbing the wealthy." Vertical Ent. has debuted an official trailer for an indie con thriller titled Lying & Stealing directed by Matt Aselton. The film tells the story of two clever grifters who team up for one big heist. Ivan is a gifted and discerning art thief who wants out. Elyse is an aspiring actress whose own past transgressions in Hollywood haunt her, as well as a mountain of debt. These two outsiders are drawn to each other. Starring Theo James and Emily Rartajkowski, with Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Fred Melamed, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Tim Bader, Evan Handler, and Keith Powell. It looks like a fun, low budget art heist film - but doesn't seem that original. Here's the first official trailer for Matt Aselton's Lying & Stealing, direct from Vertical's YouTube: Ivan (Theo James) is a gifted and discerning art thief who wants out.

You’d been forgiven if you’ve forgotten the name of Matt Aselton who, a decade earlier, made his directorial debut with Gigantic – a film with Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, John Goodman inside a quirky mattress store and ideas of adoption that I caught at the 2008 Toronto Intl. Among the Euro titles we have Gael Morel's Apres Lui with Catherine Deneuve as Camille, a divorcee whose beloved 20-year-old son has just died in a car accident. She is overcome with grief, but her anguish manifests itself in the strange obsession she develops for her son’s best friend. "Gigantic" reviewby Mike Digiorgio (1 ½ out of 5) Gigantic mess… Gigantic waste of time and talent… Gigantic pile of… oh, I could go on. I suppose Gigantic is a comedy, although I didn’t quite get the humor. It’s certainly quirky – a quirky story about two quirky people who find each other. But it’s largely quirky just to be quirky, and the two leads are so laid back and uncharismatic it’s hard to care. Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood) is Brian, a guy who works in a mattress warehouse. A quirky (and rich) giant of a man (John Goodman) comes in to buy a mattress, and later, his daughter Harriet (Zooey Deschanel) comes in and falls asleep on the mattress her dad bought. Brian and Harriet begin an odd little romance as they try and figure each other out. Besides their own quirks, they face two other potential obstacles.

“I don’t remember ever wanting to just haul out and punch a movie before ‘Gigantic,’” Nick Pinkerton writes in his review of Matt Aselton’s film for The Village Voice. Though Pinkerton’s disdain for the film is somewhat more extreme that most critics, the film - which stars Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel - is finding a generally harsh response from critics. Writes indieWIRE‘s Michael Koresky: “Two tired, and seemingly opposed, trademarks …...

- Like it or not, we unfortunately don't get to choose our parents. The definition of family in Matt Aselton's Gigantic is described as a parent-adult child relationship that is beneficial, but not essential for "survival". Despite the enormous age difference between his parents and other siblings, Paul Dano's the "accident of the family" character seems to benefit from the support structure that his family seems to offer and he can certainly relate to the unevenness found in the father-daughter relationship in his love interest, (Zooey Deschanel who is paired with John Goodman, who plays her eccentric in all aspects of life father), but curiously, he makes the sound choice to alter his existence and his own family experience by adopting a child of his own. I've seen the picture twice now, and its definitely not your standard rom com. The exclusive clip below is a good representation

Gigantic
Starring Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, and John Goodman
Directed by Matt Aselton
Rated R
Brian Weathersby (Paul Dano) has always wanted to adopt a baby from China. His father (Edward Asner) remembers Brian's eighth birthday, and he was disappointed even then that he didn't get a Chinese baby. But now, 20 years later, he might only be months away.
What do we do when we live out our dreams, the goals that we've built our entire lives around? I suppose it's probably better to know you've accomplished the goal than to know that you can't, but it still must leave an empty space in your life, because the longing is gone.
Matt Aselton's Gigantic is less about the adoption of a Chinese baby and more about the unfulfilled life the baby will undoubtedly change. Brian works at a high-end mattress store. He makes 5% of everything he sells, and one morning,...

[An indieWIRE review from Reverse Shot.] Two tired, and seemingly opposed, trademarks of recent American independent cinema make for a deadly combination in Matt Aselton’s “Gigantic.” It’s an arch, self-aware puppy-dog love story, shot through with an overly aestheticized, almost clinical detachment. This off-putting hybrid of idiosyncratic romantic comedy and surreal, interiorized character portrait is never able to remotely reconcile its two tendencies: to both ingratiate the audience with its main …...

Gigantic is one of those quirky indie films with a concept that only really works in the indie marketplace and at film festivals. In it, Paul Dano plays a mattress salesman who, on his own, decides to adopt an Asian baby, but before he gets approved, he meets the quirky and fun odd daughter, played by Zooey Deschanel, of a very rich and lazy man, played by John Goodman. Oh and he's also chased around New York City by a homeless guy who likes beating him up, and that's not a joke. Sadly it's not that great of a film, or at least, when I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival, it was one of my very least favorite films of that entire fest. The trailer for Gigantic which stars Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel and writtern and directed by first-timer Matt Aselton has just debuted at Apple after having a rather quiet debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. However, judging by a trio of reviews I snagged off the Internet it doesn't appear like all is lost as only one review appears to be primarily negative while the other two may best be described as passive with a certain audience in mind. The film centers on a mattress salesman named Brian Weathersby (Dano) who finds his plan to adopt a Chinese baby augmented by the arrival of a young woman, Happy (Deschanel), who comes into his workplace, falls asleep on one of the beds, and starts to affect his life upon waking up. Also starring in the film are John Goodman, Ed Asner, Jane Alexander and Ian Roberts. Here are...

Jay and I caught Matt Aselton's directorial debut Gigantic at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and I think I liked it more than most. Still, even I had to admit that it was a bit of a stereotypical indie "dramedy", and it kinda dragged at points. Paul Dano plays a young mattress salesman who is planning on adopting a baby from China, when he meets Happy (Zooey Deschanel), the carefree daughter of one particularly rich customer. John Goodman and Edward Asner both have amusing turns as the fathers of both of the main characters, while Zach Galifianakis plays a creepy homeless dude (or does he???). It looks like Gigantic will finally be getting a theatrical release courtesy of First ...

Cinematical has received this exclusive poster for the film Gigantic, starring Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel and John Goodman (check out the full-sized version in the gallery below). Co-written and directed by Matt Aselton, Gigantic follows a depressed mattress salesman (Dano) who, while on a quest to adopt a Chinese baby, is sidetracked when he falls in love with a girl named Happy (Deschanel). Completely bizarre plot, but I have no problem whatsoever watching Deschanel in anything, and it's damn good to see our buddy Dano back up on the big screen (that yellow on the poster remind you of anything?). Oh, and I should mention that Ed Asner and Jane Alexander co-star. Right on! Click on the image below to see the full poster.

- If it would have played at Sundance, it would have stuck out a lot more than it did at Tiff where it got a little lost among the long list of worthy films to see. This was my final film screened before heading back home and if I haven’t mentioned it before Matt Aselton is a talent to watch out for. Unlike its title, Gigantic is a small in scope portrait which sees complex, oddball leads Paul Dano and Zooey Deschanel emancipating their romance in a series of miss-steps, but it’s the smart dialogue and a fine catalogue of moments that set this film apart for me. I’m glad that a smaller distribution company in First Independent Pictures has picked up the film from the Afm, since it’s the sort of picture that needs lots of nurturing and caring during the marketing phase of the pic.
