After winning the 2023 Tribeca Festival’s Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, the official trailer for Tierra Whack’s “Cypher” has been released.
Chronicling her meteoric rise to stardom, the documentary tells the rapper’s story after having first gained recognition at 15 years old when she was just rapping on the Philadelphia streets for a YouTube Channel. Quickly growing in viral fame, the video soon led the artist to director Chris Moukarbel, who began documenting her career, going behind the scenes of concerts and music videos. Whack also shares her thoughts on her newfound fame along the way.
“I think sometimes I just can’t believe this is all happening for me,” Whack says in the minute-long trailer.
But Whack soon realizes there’s a downside to the world knowing your name. “After a particularly tiring set, a seemingly innocuous fan interaction begins a series of increasingly unsettling...

Sheryl Crow, Nick Cave, King Crimson, Dio, XXXTentacion, Tanya Tucker, Chumbawamba, Courtney Barnett, Cesária Évora and Mojo Nixon — together again for the first time: These are some of the highly diverse subjects of a slate of music documentaries set to unspool at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin March 11-20.
The 16 movies represented in the “24 Beats Per Second” lineup are nearly all world premieres, in a film festival that skews toward SXSW’s original roots as a pure music festival by always carving out a special category for features that chronicle musicians or music scenes.

Exclusive: How did audiences respond to the Apple TV+ premiere of Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry, which premiered in over 100 countries and theaters? The streamer would not divulge specific numbers — they never do — but I can report that the film became the biggest hit title for young adult audiences that Apple has had so far across its slate of films and TV series. The movie drew a record-breaking 33% new viewers to the service, with young adult audiences fueling the momentum from the moment the film premiered on Thursday, February 25. Nearly half of the film’s audience came from outside the U.S. and was number one among young adults across the globe, including the U.K., Australia, Mexico, Germany, Brazil, Russia, the Netherlands, France, and more, per Apple.

Ja Morant, the NBA’s reigning rookie of the year and a rising star with the Memphis Grizzlies, is the subject of a new documentary series, “Promiseland,” that will focus on up and coming rookie athletes.
Dexton Deboree, who directed the feature “Unbanned: The Legend of AJ1,” directs the first season of “Promiseland” that looks at Morant’s rise from high school prospect to college standout at Murray State to finally the top tier of the NBA.
“Promiseland” is in post-production now after following Ja Morant from the start of the 2019-20 NBA season, and filming continued up through the NBA playoff bubble during the pandemic.
Future seasons of the show will follow rookie athletes across other sports, as well as other NBA stars. The filmmakers are currently shopping the series to buyers.

For most of the music industry, awards season ended when the Grammys came to a close the night of Jan. 26. That wasn’t the case, though, for Interscope Records, which moved on to the Oscars with just as vested an interest in domination. Just two weeks after Billie Eilish swept all four top Grammy categories, the company managed to keep just as high a profile at Sunday night’s film awards.
With a best original song win for Elton John’s “I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” Interscope can now claim a triumph in that category for the third time in four years, following the triumph of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” in 2019 and “City of Stars” from “La La Land” in 2017.
Altogether, Interscope songs or artists have claimed the original song trophy five times in the last 18 years, and had 12 nominations during that time, far more than than any label.

The Interscope record label’s interest in film/music crossover isn’t exactly a secret: With hit companion albums for “A Star Is Born,” “Black Panther” and “La La Land,” they’ve seemed to own the soundtrack space at times in recent years. And the company hasn’t completely made a secret of its desire to move into film production. But with three films premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, they’re ready to go on record as officially being in the movie business with the launch of Interscope Films.
Or re-launch, in a manner of thinking. If “Interscope Films” rings a bell of any kind, it may be because you know your history. Before there was a music company by that name, Ted Fields started Interscope Communications (aka Interscope Pictures) in 1982, before it morphed into the music behemoth we know today in 1990 and the filmmaking component eventually dropped away.
