Bobby, bubi, we need to talk about the Tony Awards! This season’s revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s landmark musical “Company” earned nine nominations, the highest for any musical revival of the year and the fourth largest tally of any show. It earned citations for Best Revival, three for performers Matt Doyle, Patti LuPone, and Jennifer Simard, Best Director for Marianne Elliott, and four others.
Glaringly absent from this well-deserved list, though, is star Katrina Lenk, who plays the musical’s central character Bobbie; Elliott has reimagined the piece with a woman at the fore. If this snub seems egregious, it’s one that productions of “Company” past have had to contend with before.

Exclusive: The upcoming pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical in Boston has cast Tony Award nominees Mark Jacoby and Robyn Hurder, and Linda Powell to its cast, producers said today.
Jacoby will play the musical icon as he is now, while the previously announced Will Swenson will portray Diamond as a young man. Jacoby’s casting is the first indication that A Beautiful Noise will include two actors portraying the singer-songwriter.
“Neil Diamond has had a myriad of career highs which are a joy to celebrate, but sometimes as artists we look back and only see the mistakes, the roads not taken, the failures, and the aftermath success can leave behind,” said director Michael Mayer in a statement. “Anthony McCarten’s book for A Beautiful Noise beautifully weaves these two perspectives together: the highs and the lows, looking forward and looking back, the artist...

Update (4/6/2022): Hours after the Arizona Mirror revealed Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) was listed as a featured guest for a white nationalist organization event in Tempe, Arizona scheduled for April 20 — which also happens to be Adolf Hitler’s birthday — a spokesman for the Arizona congressman told the publication that Gosar will not be in attendance. According to Gosar campaign consultant Rory McShane, the congressman is booked for a “farm tour” on the day of the event. McShane also told the Arizona Mirror that “American Populist Union never contacted Gosar, his staff or his campaign.

It is a rare enough occurrence for a genuine born and bred Broadway star to emerge post-millennium, but one as astonishingly versatile as Raul Esparza, having scored accolades since his blazing debut in a string of hit plays and musicals, ranging from Mamet and Sondheim and Pinter to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and his aforementioned Broadway bow in The Rocky Horror Show, is a downright cause for celebration. Esparza makes his grand return to the Broadway stage in a musical with his upcoming starring role in Alan Menken amp Glenn Slaters adaptation of the Steve Martin film Leap Of Faith, featuring a country and gospel influenced score and a spirited, energetic production by Christopher Ashley who, incidentally, helmed Esparzas first Broadway show, Rocky Horror. While Esparza has been seen in many - most, if not quite all - Broadway seasons in the decade since 2001, he has also scored in leading...

Give the director credit for thinking outside the box, at least.
Searching for leads in the upcoming small town Southern film, "Main Street," director John Doyle and crew needed two male leads. So, they went to two of the top British stars of the day. Naturally. Oscar-winner Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom star in the upcoming feel good indie, with Bloom playing a mustachioed cop and Firth a well meaning businessman.
Also, it's not the only upcoming movie that features Bloom with fantastic lip fur.
Co-staring are Patricia Clarkson, Ellen Burstyn and Amber Tamblyn, quite the cast for a small indie that hits Video on Demand on August 5th, more than a month than its September 9th street date.
Here's the official synopsis:
Several residents of a small Southern city whose lives are changed by the arrival of a stranger with a controversial plan to save their decaying hometown. In...

There are several things that immediately jump out in the trailer for Main Street, the late Horton Foote’s last screenplay. One, Orlando Bloom’s mustache. Let’s just say Sam Elliott’s soup-strainer has nothing to worry about. Two, Colin Firth is just as charming with a Tobacco Road accent. And three, why is a movie with all these stars premiering On Demand more than a month (Aug. 5) before it shows up in theaters (Sept. 9)? The film, directed by newcomer John Doyle and shot in 2009, tells the story of a run-down North Carolina city that gets a boost when...

If you haven't heard a lick about Main Street, then you're not alone. I hadn't either, and probably wouldn't have if it were for the folks over at HeyUGuys, who seem as stunned as I am. The reason is that it packs an amazing cast: Colin Firth, Orlando Bloom, Patricia Clarkson, Ellen Burstyn, Andrew McCarthy, Isiah Whitlock Jr., and Amber Tamblyn. Brit theatre director John Doyle was at the helm.

Shot over two years ago, John Doyle’s drama Main Street is finally coming to theaters. Although it stars last year’s Oscar winner Colin Firth, it hasn’t garnered good reviews since its Austin Film Festival premiere in 2010. Looking at the trailer one can predict that this is an Oscar attempt gone wrong, with its overwrought melodrama and predictable turns. It is also the last screenplay from the late Horton Foote, who wrote the scripts for To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men. Check out the trailer below via Apple for the film also starring Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, Amber Tamblyn, and Orlando Bloom.
Synopsis:
From Horton Foote, Oscar winning screenwriter of To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies, comes Main Street, a moving ensemble drama starring Oscar winner Colin Firth, Orlando Bloom, Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson, Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, and Andrew McCarthy. The lives of...

Magnolia Pictures have released the first trailer for their new movie, Main Street which I’d not heard of until right now. Seems odd as the cast is rather spectacular (mainly since it contains Colin Firth!). The Full cast list includes Colin Firth, Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, Amber Tamblyn, Orlando Bloom and is helmed by director, John Doyle.

Director: John Doyle Writer: Horton Foote Starring: Colin Firth, Ellen Burstyn, Patricia Clarkson, Amber Tamblyn, Orlando Bloom, Andrew McCarthy Main Street follows the "intersecting" lives of several people in the fading rural town of Durham, North Carolina. As the now elderly heir to a once thriving tobacco empire, Georgiana Carr (Ellen Burstyn) lives in the historic downtown house that she's always called home. The industrial and economic decay of the town has finally caught up to Georgiana. With the help of her niece Willa (Patricia Clarkson), Georgiana must make the hard decision to rent out all of the old tobacco warehouses to prospective businesses, or sell the house her father built so she can pay her bills. At the same time, the youth of the crumbling town yearn to leave for the opportunity and excitement of distant big cities. Harris (Orlando Bloom), is a local cop who is trying to...
