It’s been nearly one year since TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew visited Capitol Hill for a contentious hearing, but Congress is still trying to figure out how it wants to regulate the world’s top short-form video app. The latest proposal comes from a bipartisan group of U.S. Congresspeople, who are hoping to force ByteDance to divest TikTok.
The latest bill was introduced in the House by Mike Gallagher (R-wi) and Raja Krishnamoorthi, who are the Chair and Ranking Member, respectively, of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. Gallagher and Krishnamoorthi’s bill, which was co-sponsored by a bipartisan group of about a dozen Congressional reps, takes on “Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications.” The list of qualifying foreign adversaries includes Iran, Russia, North Korea, and ByteDance’s home country, China.

William and Jim Reid of The Jesus and Mary Chain have announced a new memoir titled Never Understood: The Story of the Jesus and Mary Chain (pre-order here).
The two brothers, along with critic and writer Ben Thompson, will track the history of their band throughout the last four decades, from their origins in Scotland’s East Kilbride to their critically-lauded debut, Psychocandy, all the way to the band’s 1998 breakup and 2007 reunion.
It will also dive deep into the turmoil that both Reid brothers experienced in the band — issues with drugs, alcohol, adjustments to fame, and brotherly spats are highlighted throughout. Never Understood will be available first in the UK on August 15th (via White Rabbit), and later in the US on September 3rd (via Hatchette Books).
“It’s got plenty of warts, we can assure you of that,” said Jim Reid in a statement about the book. “In fact,...

Scottish alternative rockers The Jesus and Mary Chain have shared “Chemical Animal,” the second single from their forthcoming album Glasgow Eyes. Stream it below.
“Chemical Animal” is unmistakably The Jesus and Mary Chain from its first few notes — with hazy atmospherics, singer Jim Reid’s husky baritone, and a drum beat that moves at a steady trot, the song hits all The Jesus and Mary Chain’s usual signifiers. A sense of darkness looms over the track, especially when Reid achingly croons “I fill myself with chemicals/ To hide the dark shit I don’t show” in the chorus. The song doesn’t so much fizzle out as it does burn slowly, with billowing guitars and synths that feel like black smoke rising through the air.

Scottish alternative rock duo The Jesus and Mary Chain have announced their new album, Glasgow Eyes, set for release on March 8th via Fuzz Club. The LP will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the outfit, comprised of brothers Jim and William Reid. The announcement arrives alongside news of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s upcoming 2024 EU/UK headliner tour — as well as the release of their first Glasgow Eyes single, “jamcod,” which you can stream below.
Jim Reid said in a press release that Glasgow Eyes is a Jesus and Mary Chain album, through and through. “Our creative approach is remarkably the same as it was in 1984, just hit the studio and see what happens,” he said. “There’s a telepathy there — we are those weird not-quite twins that finish each other’s sentences. Of course, as one could expect from the highly experimental duo, there will still be plenty...

Breakout Sundance star and rapper Tia Nomore has signed with Range Media Partners for representation in acting and music.
Nomore is the lead in Savannah Leaf’s upcoming A24 drama “Earth Mama,” in which she delivered a critically acclaimed debut feature performance at this year’s Sundance Film Festival as a struggling single mother. Well established in hip hop, Nomore rose to prominence as an artist on the Oakland music scene.
In “Earth Mama,” Nomore stars as expectant mom Gia, who already has two kids in foster care as she anticipates a third. Though she has the support of a tight-knit community in the Bay Area, she faces formidable challenges in reclaiming her family and building a new life. A24, the studio behind the Oscar winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” will release the film on July 7.

It’s not every day you get to unbox a Scream-themed Happy Meal for adults. Pop-up dinner party brand Chain is celebrating Spyglass and Paramount’s newest slasher entry with a drive-thru classic and swankified fast-food restaurant vibes. All the decorations blend Scream with roadside-casual mascots, like Grimace dressed as Casey Becker or a Bob’s Big Boy with a supersized knife through its burger. That’s what happens when Chain co-founders Bj Novak and chef Tim Hollingsworth share their love of exclusive diner experiences with horror fans, melding two worlds into one bloody-rare bite of Woodsboro history.
Chain started as a pick-up concept during lockdown. Novak and Hollingsworth wanted to recreate fast-food favorites with an upscale twist, available to the lucky few who secured an invite to their limited gourmet drops. Past releases are odes to Outback Steakhouse (“The Bustin’ Onion”) and Taco Bell (“The Wagyu Beef Cruncho...

Ryan Murphy’s “Dahmer” Netflix series just launched to some impressive premiere numbers, and considering how many people checked out the true crime limited series in its first week, its ’80s and ’90s-infused soundtrack is no doubt of interest.
Jeffrey Dahmer was one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he committed a series of brutal murders, often dismembering his victims and keeping body parts as souvenirs. His crimes horrified the nation and captivated the media.
The Netflix limited series “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” chronicles Dahmer’s childhood and early adulthood, leading up to the first of his murders in 1978. It explores the events that shaped him into a serial killer, and the police investigation that eventually led to his capture. It’s hard to believe that he evaded escape for so long, given the lack of complexity in planning and executing his crimes.
