Sharon Jones’ life ended November 18, but it defied odds. “Too short, too black, too fat and old” (lyrics from “I’m Still Here”) for the music industry, the 4′ 11″ Jones spent her 30s and 40s working odd jobs ranging from wedding singer to corrections officer before she met the The Dap Kings, a Brooklyn R&B group with a label (Daptone) specializing in music that captures the essence of ’60s and ’70s soul and funk.
As she approached the age of 60, Jones had become an unlikely music star, known for a dynamic performance style that drew comparisons to James Brown. It’s also when she was diagnosed with stage two pancreatic cancer. Yet like every other obstacle, cancer and chemotherapy weren’t going to stop Jones from performing.

“Logic never really applied to Sharon, she was a superhero,” Gabriel Roth, bass player and co-owner of Daptone Records.

Sharon Jones has died at age 60 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. A statement on she and her band The Dap Kings’ official Facebook page confirmed the news. “She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts during this difficult time,” the post read. A documentary about Jones’ health struggles and triumphant return to music — “Miss Sharon Jones” — is currently making awards rounds, directed by Oscar winner Barbara Kopple. With soaring, belting vocals, Sharon Jones has often been called “the female James Brown.” Now, her on-going legacy looks to be revisited and revitalized in the first trailer for Miss Sharon Jones! The documentary was a selection at a number of film festivals, following Jones’ ability to overcome naysayers and garner a massive following of fans through her hard work and dedication.
Coming from legendary director Barbara Kopple (behind the landmark documentary Harlan County, USA), see the trailer below, along with a poster.
Two-time Academy Award winner Barbara Kopple (Harlan County, USA) shines a powerful, inspiring and entertaining spotlight on the legendary R&B queen Sharon Jones, whose wonder is a force to behold both on and off stage. Always told she was never good enough (“you’re too black, too short, too old”); Sharon finally broke-through as a renowned soul singer being hailed as a modern-day female James Brown.

Ravinia, the summer-long music festival in north suburban Chicago, has rolled out its 2013 season schedule with plenty of fanfare — and a few surprises.
Predictably, the most popular bold-face names on the bill are dominated by veteran performers like Sting, Tony Bennett, Sheryl Crow, Journey and Brian Wilson (who, for legal reasons/a spat with Mike Love, can't officially perform with his old band mates as "The Beach Boys").
(See the major acts announced for Ravinia's 2013 festival lineup below.)
Younger acts like Josh Groban and St. Vincent, playing with David Byrne, mix with the more long-in-the-tooth artists, while hip acts like Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings add freshness to a (usually very white) lineup that skews heavily toward the contemporary crowd.
There's also a small crush of alt-rock and pop bands, mostly from the '90s, many of whom would be considered past their sell-by date, that have been jammed together...

What happens when you take 5 prominent DJs, pair them with artists from 5 contrasting genres, and film it? Well that’s exactly what the Re:Generation Music Project is looking to find out with their upcoming Documentary entitled Re:Generation.
The film, sponsored both by The Grammys as well as Hyundai’s new Veloster sports car, follows 5 electronic musicians as they are faced with the tedious task of adapting to genre’s uniquely different from their own. Some artists such as DJ Premiere and Skrillex, find the experience to be entirely humbling and gratifying, while others like Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method, encounter nothing but resistance as both genres and personalities race towards a head on collision.
Check Out The Trailer:
Unlike similar films like 2009′s It Might Get Loud, this film will not be released in theaters, but will instead see an exclusive premiere on YouTube in February 2012. Now at first...

Today was a pop-culture mess over on facebook with a third of my friends lobbing "Star Wars" quotes back and forth, another third doing the same with "Friends" quotes, and the rest on the sidelines all "I had tacos for lunch. Hooray for tacos!" or whatever the dumb status messages I don't pay attention to say. Anyway, I have to go from That to playing an opera tonight so I'm telling all of you who participate in advance that you broke my brain. I hope you're happy. Here's Tuesday night's TV:
8:00pm: "90210" on The CW
"American Idol" on Fox
"The Biggest Loser" on NBC
"Dancing With the Stars" on ABC. I think the following three shows should get together to make "The Biggest Dancing American Loser". I'd totally watch that show and I watch none of them as they are now.
"NCIS" on CBS
"Nova: Mt. St. Helens Back...

I'm exhausted, pretty sure I'm getting sick, and have a headache more often than not. I'd say this was related to the end of the semester, but I think it's just that May is approaching which basically marks the beginning of summer here in North Cuba and the change of seasons always does screwy things to me. I'm lucky enough to be fleeing town in Mid-May so I don't have to stick around part of for what one prominent South Floridian writer (Dave Barry) referred to as "Giant Armpit Season" which falls roughly between June and September. You can spot the tourists pretty easily those months because they're the ones outside. Also, they always look surprised when the afternoon monsoons roll up. Don't get me wrong, I love the whole jungle meeting the ocean sort of environment down here, but when it's so humid I have to grow gills to...

As some of you on Facebook may have noticed, something called "Boobquake" is happening today as a sort of protest against Tehran's prayer leader who said "Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity, and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes." (Taken from the Boobquake event page.) So immodestly dressed women cause earthquakes and according to some people, gay sex caused Hurricane Katrina. I'm always bewildered by people who believe this because if it actually worked, women and gays would both have equal rights in a heartbeat. The Human Rights Campaign would just threaten to sponsor a giant gay orgy in front of the Washington Monument unless the federal government struck down Doma and Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Whenever it was found that a company wasn't practicing equitable pay, their lobbies would be flooded with topless women until an earthquake destroyed the building.
