Given U2’s reputation for pushing technical and creative boundaries with its live concerts, it seemed fitting that the band opened the anticipated Sphere in Las Vegas on Friday with its most ambitious and transportive live show ever: an electrifying live performance and visual odyssey that unfolds on Sphere’s enveloping 160,000-square-foot wraparound interior LED display.
Built for an estimated $2.3 billion, Sphere is a big gamble by Msg mogul James Dolan and Sphere Entertainment Co. At 336 feet tall and 516 feet wide, the venue is now the largest spherical structure in the world, housing the largest interior and exterior wraparound LED displays. U2 kicked off their “U2:uv Achtung Baby” residency at Las Vegas’ Msg Sphere on Friday night. The sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to construct, features a wraparound interior LED screen, 170,000 ultra-directional speakers that utilize beamforming technology to deliver targeted audio to every seat in the venue, and a haptic flooring system, among many other high-tech features.
Bono and co. made full use of these features as they ran through a 22-song set that included material from their 1991 studio album, Achtung Baby, as well as their new song “Atomic City” and classics like “Vertigo,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” With or Without You,” and “Beautiful Day.”
Oftentimes, the 35-story building’s floor-to-ceiling screens would project Es Devlin and Brian Eno-inspired artwork, while fans were treated to a crystal clear street view of Sin City during their new Vegas-inspired song. The 22-year-old admits that she’s “mortified” at the prospect of treading the boards at the Cameron Mackintosh-owned Gielgud Theatre for a strictly limited season from June 7-September 2.
Lyndsey Turner, who directed what became referred to as the Benedict Cumberbatch Hamlet at the Barbican eight years ago, staged Miller’s revival at the National last fall with Erin Doherty — who played Princess Anne in The Crown — as Abigail.
Alcock is the first cast member booked for the West End transfer. “These were the only ones who offered me a job, you know what I mean?” she laughed.

Exclusive: Sam Mendes has picked Johnny Flynn, Tuppence Middleton and Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss to portray legendary stars Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and John Gielgud in The Motive and the Cue, a mouth-watering new play by Jack Thorne that explores how acting giants Burton and Gielgud staged Hamlet on Broadway in 1964.
Burton, newly wed to Taylor after their affair on the set of epic film Cleopatra, signed on to play the Danish prince in a fabled production directed by Gielgud in New York.
On opening night in April, 1964, scores of police hemmed in crowds who were as eager to catch a glimpse of Taylor entering the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre as they were to see her husband as the depressed Dane.

Exclusive: Two shows are being lined up to replace Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella musical which closes after a disappointing, short-lived run in London’s West End.
News of Cinderella’s closure became a contentious affair, causing members of the actors union Equity to picket outside the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Cast, crew, musicians and those working backstage were angered with management because many heard about the show’s demise via social media.
However, no time has been wasted in finding new tenants for the Gillian Lynne. Producers stampeded the place in almost impolite haste.
Tickets for the show that immediately follows Cinderella into the theater in London’s Covent Garden will be on sale by the end of next week.
Deadline has learned that it will be the much trumpeted Elliott & Harper, Catherine Schreiber and Leeds Playhouse production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, adapted from C.S.

“The Lehman Trilogy” has had a protracted journey to Broadway. Not quite as long as the nearly two centuries of history that the play chronicles, of course, but what began in London in 2018 and made a splash Off-Broadway in 2019 has finally arrived at the Nederlander Theatre, opening on Oct. 14. Ben Power’s adaptation of Stefano Massini’s play originally began previews on March 7, 2020, but played less than one week before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered theaters.
Beginning in 1844 when the first of the three Lehman brothers arrived in New York from Bavaria, “The Lehman Trilogy” chronicles this notorious family’s insatiable quest for wealth and capital accumulation through the 2008 stock market crash that toppled the firm. Tony-winner Sam Mendes directs a cast of three actors – Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley, and Adrian Lester – who play the innumerable characters needed to tell the tale of generations of Lehmans and centuries of global capitalism.

Director Sam Mendes’ hit London staging of The Lehman Trilogy is heading to Broadway, with previews beginning Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the Nederlander Theatre. Opening night is Thursday, March 26, 2020.
The widely expected engagement of the acclaimed production was announced today by producers The National Theatre, Neal Street Productions, and Scott Rudin/Barry Diller/David Geffen.
Written by Italian playwright Stefano Massini and adapted into English by Ben Power, The Lehman Trilogy will play a strictly limited 16-week engagement featuring original cast of Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles. The sold-out West End production scored five Olivier Award nominations.
The epic play weaves together nearly two centuries of family history, charting “the humble beginnings, outrageous successes, and devastating failure of the financial institution that would ultimately bring the global economy to its knees.”
Today’s announcement describes the play as “the quintessential story of western capitalism, rendered through the lens of a single immigrant family.

Prepare for another inside look into the art, science, and philosophy of design for the world that we take for granted around us. Scott Dadich and Morgan Neville’s “Abstract: The Art of Design” is returning for a second season on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
The series lets the designers themselves offer insight into how they first conceive of and then execute their visions in a variety of disciplines. In Season 1, the series examined craftspeople ranging from illustrator Christoph Niemannn and Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield to stage designer Es Devlin and graphic designer Paula Scher.
In its review of Season 1, IndieWire said, “There’s real excitement in hearing a creator explain his inspirations, when it’s done right — and that’s something ‘Abstract’ is rich with. You never know, after all, where a great idea might come from…It is fascinating to see this sort of focus applied to the creation...

Update: Set designer Es Devlin has seemingly responded to Lorde's accusations, posting a photo to Instagram of a floating box she designed for the English National Opera in 2007. Noting the date, it appears she first used the design concept over 10 years ago. "Carmen by Georges Bizet , English National Opera 2007," the designer, who has worked with Kanye West since 2005 and has also worked with Lorde, captioned the post. TMZ reports that Devlin designed Kanye's floating stage for his Saint Pablo Tour in 2016, and worked with Lorde on a similar box look the following year for Coachella, a similar design was later used for Lorde's tour. _______ Lorde is taking some issue with Kanye West...

Lorde is not happy with Kids See Ghosts. The singer took to Instagram to claim Kanye West and Kid Cudi stole the design for the floating, glass rectangular box they performed in at Camp Flog Gnaw this weekend from her.
“I’m proud of the work I do and it’s flattering when other artists feel inspired by it, to the extent that they choose to try it on themselves,” she wrote on Instagram. “But don’t steal — not from women or anyone else — not in 2018 or ever.” The floating...

In Judaism, death is followed by the sitting of shiva. For seven days, seated mourners reflect on their loss. The ritual recurs throughout “The Lehman Trilogy,” playwright Steffano Massino’s sweeping history of Lehman Brothers, the small family firm that became one of the world’s biggest banks, up until the financial crash of 2008. Each time a Lehman passes away, the clan gather in remembrance to recite the Kaddish. “The Lehman Trilogy,” directed at the National Theatre by Sam Mendes, marks the company’s collapse in a similar way — we sit and reflect on its rise and demise. It is, in the end, a parable for our times.
Massino’s script is a classy affair, storytelling that’s at once sumptuous and spare. Three actors play three generations of Lehmans: the trio of German Jewish immigrant brothers who founded a fabric shop in Montgomery, Alabama; the two sons who inherited...

When it comes to producing live television you only have “one chance to get it right,” so “Jesus Christ Superstar” production designer Jason Ardizzone West was “praying in the back corner” that everything would go smoothly when the show was performed and televised on NBC this past Easter Sunday, April 1. “But as far as I’m concerned everything came out really well, and I’m very happy about it.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Ardizzone West above.
It was a “surprise” that he got the job in the first place. He was recommended for it by production designer Es Devlin, whom he’s worked with on projects including Beyonce‘s “Formation” tour and “American Psycho” on Broadway. Ardizzone West had an “interesting combination of design history” that suited him well to this live theatrical production: he previously worked as an architect and is experienced in musical theater as well as in concert design.
