This is the Pure Movies review for All Eyez On Me, starring Demetrius Shipp Jr., Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Annie Ilonzeh, Lauren Cohan and Jamal Woolard, and directed by Benny Boom. It’s difficult to overstate the cultural impact of Tupac Shakur. Whether it’s inspiring Kung-Fu Kenny to make his 2015 masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly, shedding a global light on the devastating social issues that perpetually haunted him (and are a blight on Western society to this day) or appearing alongside Snoop Dogg as a posthumous hologram at Coachella 2012, ‘Pac is the kind of hip-hop artist that even your gran could name. His legend looms large, lingering so fervently in the pop-cultural consciousness that even the greatest rap-sceptic is at least vaguely aware of his charisma, his social conscience and the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death. Any biopic is faced with an embarrassment of riches.

This long and solemn hagiography seems concerned only with bolstering the sainthood of the murdered hip-hop star
Demetrius Shipp Jr gives a very accomplished impersonation of Tupac Shakur in this long and solemn hagiography, similar in its piety to the 2003 documentary Tupac: Resurrection. It has similar material – with similar scenes and similar tropes – to F Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton, about Nwa, but with less passion and less energy.
The same old story is rehearsed: the brilliantly talented rapper becomes a very rich and aggressive uber-celebrity obsessed with respect, who then gets involved in a deeply charmless and unedifying bi-coastal feud with rival rapper Biggie Smalls, played here by Jamal Woolard, who also in fact played Biggie in the 2009 film Notorious. Eventually, Tupac is killed, in a shooting that is still unsolved.

In the opening scene to Benny Boom’s Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me, we see the esteemed rapper tell a reporter, in prison, he wants his real story to be told – and the interviewer responds by assuring the hotheaded wordsmith he’ll do all he can. Effectively working as something of a mouthpiece for the director, or a disclaimer even, sadly it’s not a promise kept – as we struggle to get beyond the facade of the infamous performer.
It’s a shame this be the case, for Tupac was a unique hip hop artist, who put everything on the line. Take Do For Love – he strips himself of that distinctive masculinity, and loses his dignity – it’s a song about being so deep in love he’s willing to forgive his partner for any wrongdoing. This was the sort of person Tupac was, and...

Demetrius Shipp Jr. looks a lot like Tupac Shakur. While in some circles that could be enough to recommend the first-time actor for the part of the beloved late rapper, it’s a casting choice indicative of much bigger issues in Benny Boom’s long-gestating biopic, “All Eyez on Me.” The casting choice suggests that a commitment to accuracy, but that doesn’t make up for many other shortcomings in a movie that does no favors to Tupac’s legacy.
Opening with a political urgency that belies a very different project, Boom’s film (penned by Jeremy Haft, Eddie Gonzalez, and Steven Bagatourian) initially reads as a timely rallying cry around Shakur’s legacy, before devolving into a paint-by-the-numbers biopic that unspools with as much energy as a Wikipedia entry. Framed in the most uninspiring way possible — with Hill Harper playing a journalist who visits Tupac in prison to reflect...

"You must live for something. And you must be willing to die for something." Open Road Films has debuted another new trailer for the Tupac film All Eyez on Me, which makes this the fourth trailer for the film since they started debuting last year (see the first, second, third here). The film profiles the life of extremely successful American rapper Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, who has killed in a drive by shooting at the age of 25 in 1996. Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays the late great musician, also starring Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Annie Ilonzeh, Dominic L. Santana, Keith Robinson, plus Jamal Woolard as Biggie. This trailer actually gets more into his complete life story with some real scenes, and it still looks damn good. I'm so in. Celebrated as a rapper, actor, poet and activist, Tupac Shakur was a hugely influential figure in the world of rap and hip-hop right up until the moment when he was killed in a drive-by shooting at 25 years young. That was in ’96, and the ensuing murder investigation that spawned over both Tupac and Christopher Wallace’s (The Notorious B.I.G.) deaths will fuel both LAbyrinth and Unsolved, USA’s crime pilot headed up by Josh Duhamel (Transformers: The Last Knight) and Bokeem Woodbine.

USA has come up with a show, similar to Making a Murderer or American Crime Story: The People V. Oj Simpson, where they will explore unexplained deaths; a scripted true crime series. Unsolved, at least in the first season, will focus on the deaths of the great Tupac and Biggie Smalls. This hits home to me as I was affected by Tupac's death immensely. I never listened to Biggie until years later, and at that point I realized how tragic of a loss these two performers were.
It is still unclear who actually committed the murders of these two individuals, even though we Know -- we have no proof, and USA intends on exploring this.
Who will actually portray these roles is the big question that was answered today.
Marcc Rose will reprise the role he played as Tupac in Straight Outta Compton, and what a great pick this is.

Benny Boom’s All Eyez On Me promises to be a lurid, somewhat sensationalist depiction of the complex life of rap legend Tupac Shakur, complete with warnings about the price of fame, and the looming shadow of the rapper’s 1996 death. Today, Deadline reports that the film has secured a release date, with Boom’s biopic landing on June 16, 2017. The film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Shakur (and, presumably, his immortal hologram, provided its narrative stretches that far). Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Annie Ilonzeh, Dominic L. Santana, Jamal Woolard, Keith Robinson and Cory Hardrict all co-star, operating off a script from Ed Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft.

The life of rapper Tupac Shakur has come to the big screen before in the Oscar-nominated documentary “Tupac: Resurrection,” but like Biggie Smalls in “Notorious” and N.W.A. in last year’s breakout hit “Straight Outta Compton,” the rapper is finally getting the biopic treatment with the upcoming feature “All Eyez On Me.” A new trailer for the drama hit the web yesterday to mark the 20th anniversary of Tupac’s death, and it features a great ensemble charting the rapper/actor’s rags-to-riches rise and fall.

Clip It: Each day, Jon Davis looks at the world of trailers, featurettes, and clips and puts it all in perspective. The trailer for All Eyes on Me is violent, raw, and Shakespearean. The quick cutting is rapid and builds to a crescendo. I'd say this trailer is Nsfw, so watch out. This film is going to be an exposed nerve, which is what Tupac was, so it may end up being appropriate tone for the kind of man he was. For those of us not of age in the '90s, Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls had a west coast vs, east coast, rapper vs. rapper rivalry that wasn't just a pop culture distraction. Relationships were ruined. Lives were lost. In order to get a complete picture of what happened between Tupac and Biggie, you need to know about both of their lives. I'd be remiss if I didn't...

"What happened to me? I got shot five times!" A second teaser for the film All Eyez on Me has arrived, with more footage than the first teaser from the summer. The film profiles the life of successful American rapper Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, who has killed in a drive by shooting at the age of 25 in 1996. Demetrius Shipp Jr. plays the late musician, and the cast includes Danai Gurira, Kat Graham, Annie Ilonzeh, Dominic L. Santana, Jamal Woolard and Keith Robinson. This actually looks damn good, better than anyone expected and that's a good thing. This trailer is very powerful, makes me really want to see this. Here's the second teaser trailer for Benny Boom's All Eyez on Me, direct from the film's YouTube: You can still watch the first teaser trailer for All Eyez on Me here, to compare footage from these two. A chronicle of the life of rapper Tupac Shakur.

Twenty years ago today, the world lost one of its strongest voices, Tupac Shakur. To commemorate the anniversary of his death, after an initial teaser, a second red band teaser has been unveiled for his biopic All Eyez On Me. Helmed by Benny Boom (an incredible director name, if I may say so), Eyez is a chronicling of the life and music of one of the most seminal rappers ever to touch the mic.
Newcomer Demetrius Shipp stars as Tupac (and looks an uncanny amount like the late rapper), who grows up seeing a life of police brutality and violence in his neighborhood, and decides to fight back through his music — as well as telling his story by “painting a picture with a pen.” Check out the new teaser below, along with the first poster.

Tupac puts Dan Quayle on blast, talks loyalty with the Notorious B.I.G. and grapples with duty, temptation and violence. It's all in the the intense new trailer for All Eyez on Me, a biopic about the rapper who died 20 years ago today.
The first full clip opens with Pac (played by Demetrius Shipp, Jr.) unleashing a righteous and eerily prescient screed to an adoring crowd: "Police kill innocent black folk every day and Quayle's coming after me? But I'm used to people coming at me. This shit been happening my whole life.

TBS is working on a scripted comedy series based on the life and lyrics of the iconic rapper Notorious B.I.G.
The show, titled “Think Big,” follows an inner-city teen trying to earn a living for his young daughter and son. The network did not reveal which lyrics exactly are the basis for the series, but there’s a slew of good one-liners that fans could try and pinpoint.
“Think Big” was created by Mass Appeal, which will produce the series along with Wayne Barrow from Bystorm Films and Biggie’s mother Voletta Wallace for Notorious Big, Inc.

The upcoming music biopic “All Eyez On Me” follows the life of rapper Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp, Jr.), from his humble beginnings to his professional success and cult personality to his tragic demise by a fatal drive-by shooting. Today would be Shakur’s 45th birthday, so it’s only appropriate that the first teaser trailer for “All Eyez On Me” would drop today of all days. In the trailer, Shakur’s mother Afeni Shakur (Danai Gurira) explains to her son over voiceover, “This ain’t just about you. Like all black men, you have a bullseye on your back. They are going to give you the tools that you need to destroy yourself. So above all else, to thine own self be true. Let me see your spirit.” Watch the trailer above.

Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton has resurrected a long gestating biopic of late rap icon Tupac Shakur. Singleton, who directed Shakur in his 1993 film Poetic Justice, will also produce and help re-write the Untitled Tupac Shakur Project alongside scribes Jeremy Haft and Ed Gonzalez, whose last credit was a direct-to-video sequel to Street Kings.
Even though his filmography has been spotty in recent years, with 2 Fast 2 Furious and Abduction, returning Singleton to his West Coast roots will probably bode well for the director. The project also takes on more significance since he was a friend of Shakur’s. “Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” Singleton told Deadline. “His passing deeply affected my life. It’s unclear whether a Three Stooges biopic was ever a really good idea. The trio are the icons you don’t go messing around with (like in twenty years when a Monty Python biopic starts circling around) because it’s tough to get people to play geniuses. Even when you get insanely lucky with casting (like Jamal Woolard as Notorious B.I.G.), the result can still be a fairly average movie. So why try it? That’s a great question, but apparently it’s something that The Farrelly Brothers have to get out of their system. Unfortunately, we’ve seen in real time how difficult it can be to get a movie off the ground and what happens when you’re not quite sticking the landing. At one point, this film saw Jim Carrey, Benecio Del Toro, and Sean Penn attached – and that, absolutely, would have made for an interesting film. Maybe...
