“Oppenheimer” grabbed two out of three prizes at the Motion Picture Sound Editor’s 71st Golden Reel Awards on March 3 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Christopher Nolan’s explosive Oscar favorite won Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley, while Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” snagged Music Editing. Both films were led by supervising sound editor Richard King.
After also taking the top sound mixing prize this weekend at the 60th Cas Awards, “Oppenheimer” is now in the Oscar driver’s seat against the other sound nominees: “The Zone of Interest.” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “The Creator.”
The other Golden Reel film winners went to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” for animated feature, “32 Sounds” for documentary, and “Society of the Snow” for foreign language. This was a surprise upset over “The Zone of Interest,” the international feature film Oscar favorite. Johnnie Burn’s off-screen horrors of mass murder...

The Motion Picture Sound Editors learned to stop worrying and love the bomb this year. That’s the takeaway from the organization’s nominees for their 71st annual Golden Reel Awards, which sees Christopher Nolan’s nuclear blockbuster smash “Oppenheimer” decidedly lead the pack.
Held every March, the Golden Reel Awards celebrate sound artists and their achievements in film, television, animation, and video games over the entire calendar year. “Oppenheimer,” which boasted celebrated sound design in its recreation of its titular antihero’s atomic bomb, received the most nominations of any film this year, appearing in all categories it was eligible for: Adr, Foley, and Music Editing.
“Oppenheimer” was one of the 10 films to make the Oscars shortlist for the Best Sound category, ahead of the nomination announcement on January 23. Of the other nine shortlisted contenders, “Barbie,” “Maestro,” and “Naopleon” received two nominations, while “Ferrari,” “The Killer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,...

For years, he's brought the dead to life in books like Patient Zero and Rot & Ruin, so it's rather fitting that prolific author Jonathan Maberry has now teamed up with the legendary George A. Romero to co-edit an anthology set within the early stages of the zombie uprising in Night of the Living Dead. Titled Nights of the Living Dead, the new anthology is now available from St. Martin's Press (check out our giveaway here), and to celebrate, we caught up with Maberry for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his work on the living dead dream project, and we also have a claustrophobic excerpt from his short story "Lone Gunman."
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jonathan. How did the opportunity come about to collaborate on a Night of the Living Dead anthology with the legend himself, George A. Romero?

Fifty-seven years passed between the events of Ridley Scott's Alien and James Cameron's Aliens, and during that entire time, Ellen Ripley slept in stasis. At least, that's what we were told. Now along comes author Tim Lebbon to tell us that wasn't actually the case.
Alien: Out of the Shadows, the first in a barrage of Alien books coming this year from Titan Books (more on those in a minute), begins an all-new tale about what happened during those "lost" five decades and change. The book picks up some 37 years after the destruction of the Nostromo. The Marion is a mining ship much like the Nostromo, crewed by a rough-edged bunch of space jockeys in charge of a mining operation on planet LV178. It's a boring, repetitive job right up until the day the miners discover something other than trimonite below the planet's surface. When several of...

I think it’s been established that I’m a big fan of the Alien universe, so receiving this copy of Alien: Out of The Shadows by Tim Lebbon from Titan Books was a nice surprise. This is a brand new official novel set between the events of Alien and Aliens and I was a little confused as to how they would try to bridge that gap. I was even more surprised when I realized that Ellen Ripley would be part of the story. After all…she was in cryosleep the entire time between Alien and Aliens…or was she?

2013 was a good year for reading in general and horror in particular, so our current set of 365 days has some big shoes to fill. Here are a handful of titles coming out this year that I think are going to help 2014 meet those expectations.
Alien: Out of the Shadows by Tim Lebbon
January 28, 2014 - Titan Books
Tim Lebbon has a deft hand when it comes to working in established properties, having written novelizations and original books for fan favorites including 30 Days of Night, Cabin in the Woods and the Hellboy and Star Wars universes. Now he's taking on one of my favorite franchises – the Alien films. Out of the Shadows is an original novel that revisits the character of Ellen Ripley, who was of course brought to vivid life in the film series by Sigourney Weaver. It's the start of a new trilogy, the events of which lead directly...

Soon Griffin and Price find that there are secrets both dark and ancient lurking in the back woods of Crawford’s Hollow. Another year is coming to an end. Where does the time go? Seems the older I get the faster the time goes and there is no surer sign than that of me getting into the E-Reader game.
I finally broke down and bought a Kindle this year and no the world didn’t end. In fact I am very happy I did. I will first and foremost always love the feel of a real book; the fragrance, the crisp clean pages being turned and the weight of it gently held in my hands.
The Kindle has allowed me to read the back catalogs of many authors I love that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able afford to do. Plus, a lot of publishers and authors are sending me Kindle books for review, which is a lot better than Pdf’s. As I had to print the Pdf books out.

Five years ago, Jason Soulis experimented on the town of Black Stone Bay, creating an army of vampires for the sole purpose of seeing which ones would survive and if the creatures could evolve. Five years later, his experiments are bearing dark, bloody fruit. A new breed of monster has come from the ashes of the old, a deadlier predator with a far greater ability to kill and destroy whatever it touches. Black Stone Bay was wounded before, but the infection left behind has festered and the darkness is spreading faster than anyone has noticed, because this time the evil is better at hiding.
Maggie Preston was one of Soulis’s victims, a college-aged girl who has become something far darker. She’s fed her urges and kept her secrets with the aid of her lover and protector,...

Billing itself as “the spookiest show on earth” Horrorfind Weekend 13 took place last weekend from September 2-4. The convention held in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania included a spooky car show, a horror shorts film festival, Scaryoke, a zombie prom, and a costume contest. Celebrity appearances included Ken Foree form Dawn Of The Dead (1978), Sid Haig and Bill Moseley from House Of 1000 Corpses (2003), Scout Taylor-Compton from Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007), Rowdy Roddy Piper, and various members of the cast of True Blood. The biggest draw was probably director John Waters and his show “This Filthy Horror” on Friday night. There was a chance to meet Mr. Waters before the show and get an autograph or photo. Unfortunately the organizers of Horrorfind dropped the ball on this one.
The original plan for the signing was that it was open to anyone who was a paying guest of the convention.
