This weekend’s onslaught of smaller new films will have awards contenders and big names to jostle with at the box office. Awards hopefuls Foxcatcher and The Homesman begin their theatrical runs in limited New York and L.A. rollouts, with the former a likely winner in the first weekend when the numbers come in Sunday. The films from Sony Pictures Classics and Roadside Attractions, respectively, tell particularly American stories, though from very different eras. The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart took time off in 2013 to work on his directorial debut. Open Road’s Rosewater, starring Gael García Bernal, will begin its theatrical rollout this weekend. It will be the biggest opener of this weekend’s cadre of specialty newcomers, playing in several hundred locations in the U.S. and Canada. Actor Chris Lowell also makes his filmmaking launch with Beside Still Waters. The project had smooth sailing until it came time for distribution,...

Super-cute Allison Miller is probably best known from NBC’s Go On, but I’m sure you also remember her from that 17 Again movie where she starred next to Zac Efron, right? Ok then, it’s time for us to report that Miller is now attached to play the female lead in an upcoming romantic comedy titled There’s Always Woodstock, which comes from director Rita Merson!
Merson is making her feature directorial debut on the project, and at this moment we know that Miller is set to star as a girl named Catherine Brown, described as:
…a young wannabe songwriter whose big city life in Manhattan falls apart and she returns to spend the summer in her childhood home in Woodstock.
Unfortunately, that’s basically all we know about There’s Always Woodstock so far, but I guess that we’ll soon have more casting updates to share with you.

Joel Edgerton and Catherine Brown in Animal Kingdom. Courtesy of Sony. Movies You have a choice this weekend. You could go see Eat, Pray, Love, a bright, big-budget movie with an A-List star, based on a bestselling memoir of exotic, hedonistic self-exploration. Or you could see David Michod’s Animal Kingdom, a gritty, overcast Australian saga about the self-destruction of a small-time crime family, featuring a cast of unknowns. (Well, with the exception of Guy Peace, who, as he proved with The Hurt Locker, is getting a second wind playing minor roles in excellent indie films.) Your choice depends on whether you take more pleasure from watching Julia Roberts take pleasure, as described in a comfortably familiar book, or from appreciating an original, impeccably crafted work of art, which happens to have won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year. We recommend the latter. animalkingdomthefilm.com.au...
