Hex Wives is part of DC's Vertigo relaunch and it couldn't be coming at a better time. Aside from the fact that the first issue will be available on Halloween, witches in pop culture also seem to be at an all-time high with recent releases like The House with a Clock in Its Walls, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Hereditary, and Suspiria. I recently caught up with series creator and writer Ben Blacker to learn all about the origins of Hex Wives and where he plans to take the series:
Can you talk about your inspiration for Hex Wives and your pitch to Vertigo?
Ben Blacker: Hex Wives is the confluence of two ideas I'd been tinkering with in the back of my brain for years while my writing partner and I were working on a few other projects. Maybe five years ago, I caught an episode of “Bewitched” on TV.

Vertigo is back, and Hex Wives feels like something that could have fit right in with the glory days of the legendary DC Comics imprint.
Vertigo Comics is back! As part of the new wave of the DC mature reader imprint, Vertigo will launch a book perfectly made for the label. Hex Wives comes from writer Ben Blacker (Thrilling Adventure Hour) and artist Mirka Andolfo. Let’s let the fine folks at Vertigo describe this daring and progressive look at the world of dark magic and gender conflicts:
For hundreds of years a war has been waged between a coven of perpetually reincarnating witches and the all-male conspiracy known as the Architects. After the death of the lead Architect in 2005 it seemed the witches had finally defeated their foes.
Now, 13 years later, waking up in a perfect cookie cutter home at the end of a cul-de-sac in a sunny corner of suburbia,...

Cast your mind back to the inaugural teaser for The Force Awakens and you’ll no doubt recall that inspired shot of a downed Star Destroyer rising above the sands of Jakku. Surrounded by rusty old X-wings and remnants of the Galactic Empire, these battered artifacts evoked memories of a time gone by, when the Rebel Alliance sought to destroy Darth Vader and his tyrannical regime.
It turns out that legacy was woven into the fabric of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, too, given Lucasfilm’s lucrative sequel allowed its finale to unfold on Crait, the far-flung mineral world that was once home to an old Rebel base. That abandoned outpost turned out to be the Resistance’s last resort in The Last Jedi, as Kylo Ren and General Hux hunted down the tattered fleet.
That prolonged chase sequence essentially forms the body of Rian Johnson’s follow-up, but thanks...

Marvel’s Star Wars comics have pulled back the curtain on fan favorite Captain Phasma, introduced the world to rogue archeologist Doctor Aphra, and crafted stories that have enthralled fans across the galaxy. This December, even more secrets will be revealed when Marvel releases Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Storms of Crait #1. Written by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker (Star Wars: Join The Resistance) with art by Mike Mayhew (Star Wars, The Star Wars), the new mini-series gives fans a look behind the curtain at one very special planet in the galaxy: the mineral planet Crait.
In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it becomes a battleground between the Resistance and the First Order, but that wasn’t the first time Crait became a place where heroes and villains clashed in their fight for the galaxy. Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa once took up arms on Crait and led the rebellion...

We’re knocking on the door of summer, and that means lots of big properties are ready to be unleashed. But it’s not too late to read books exploring some recent films, as well as some new works about Sherry Lansing, film noir, and Steve McQueen. Let’s start with a unique look at David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.
The Essential Wrapped In Plastic: Pathways to Twin Peaks by John Thorne

Starting in 1992, however, there was Wrapped In Plastic, the immortal Peaks’ fanzine. Just in time for the series return on Showtime is The Essential Wrapped In Plastic: Pathways to Twin Peaks. Here, Wip co-editor John Thorne brings together some of the publication’s most vital, important essays. Every episode is included, but what makes the book...

After the negative, to put it lightly, experience of the Gilmore Girls line, I started the final day of Atx Season 4 trepidatious, to say the least. Fortunately, my fears that the frustrations of day three would bleed into and infect day four proved unfounded. I began the day with a screening of the Orphan Black episode that had aired the night before. This was followed by a Q&A moderated by Natalie Abrams of EW and featuring co-creator Graeme Manson and actor Kristian Bruun. The episode was well received, with comedic and dramatic moments prompting audible reactions from the crowd. The series’ tone is well suited to a screening like this and the episode that wound up airing this weekend, “Ruthless in Purpose, and Insidious in Method”, was a particularly good fit. At the panel afterward, Manson and Bruun had fun describing their filming and writing process. Bruun in particular was game,...

Add up all the Deadpool series (creatively), and April’s Deadpool #45 marks Wade Wilson’s landmark 250th issue! How is he celebrating? He’s dying! The end of the line comes for all, even one such as Deadpool, but he’s not gone yet! Say your condolences with this new look at the colossal-sized series finale.
First, Gerry Duggan, Brian Posehn and Mike Hawthorne serve up a 30-page main story, as the villainous Ultimatum finally makes their move. They’re coming for Deadpool – every last one of them! It’s going to be a bloodbath, but Wade’s going to go down swinging.
Then – Gerry, Brian and Scott Koblish bring you a long lost, full length Deadpool tale. Remember when Wade got a hold of the Infinity Gauntlet? No? Don’t worry – that’s what the story is for. And yes, you should be worried Wade Wilson is in possession of nigh-infinite cosmic power.

That’s right – if you add together all the Deadpool series (creatively), April’s Deadpool #45 marks Wade Wilson’s landmark 250th issue! How will he be celebrating? Death! No, really. Wade’s about to reach the end of the line, but he’s not gone yet. Through numerous incarnations in comics, film, and television, Batman has become one of the most popular comic book characters, with 2016′s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice bringing a new version of the character, and the Fox show Gotham exploring the world further. With the death of his parents at the hands of a criminal being the catalyst for Bruce Wayne’s turn into vigilante justice, the story of Batman’s origins have been explored in film and television a number of times, most notably in 1989′s Batman and 2005′s Batman Begins. A new comedy skit, however, written by Thrilling Adventure Hour‘s Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, explores the idea of the elder Waynes having faked their death, unbeknownst to Bruce. Mark Gagliardi plays Bruce, with Marc Evan Jackson and Paget Brewster taking on the roles of his parents, and John Ennis playing Alfred. The video can be seen below.

American Horror Story’s fourth season subtitle has been the subject of rumors since Coven wrapped up earlier this year. Finally, it’s been confirmed that the next installment of the horror series will be Freak Show.
American Horror Story: Freak Show
Ryan Murphy, who’s played coy amidst the constant speculation, has confirmed the title on Twitter.

Last week, American Horror Story writer and executive producer Douglas Petrie, slipped up in an interview, admitting that the upcoming season would center around carnival of sorts. During a Nerdist Writers Panel podcast recording, Castle and Arrow writer and fellow guest Moira Kirkland, who’d heard the rumors, said, “I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard carnival,” after Petrie initially declined to answer about the season.
"Yes — that was the…,” Petrie chimed in with hesitation.

The victim: Screenwriter Douglas Petrie, who wrote two of my favorite episodes of American Horror Story: Coven, “The Axeman Cometh” and “The Seven Wonders”, and is in the writers’ room for the next chapter of Ahs. He also wrote for another of my favorite shows, Pushing Daisies, and for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The venue: A Nerdist Writers Panel podcast, recorded last month and just now posted.
The perps: Host Ben Blacker, along with writer Moira Kirland (Arrow; Castle ). Also present, writers Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett (Syfy’s upcoming 12 Monkeys; Nikita; Terra Nova).
The setup: Okay, maybe it wasn’t a setup. But poor Douglas Petrie. He was talking about working on American Horror Story: Coven, and said that they had just started working on Season 4.
Ben Blacker: What is it for (season) 4? I know it’s been announced, I can’t remember what it is. Because he came to this recording unprepared,...

American Horror Story’s fourth season has been the subject of ample speculation, with co-creator Ryan Murphy keeping a tight lid on the focus of the horror miniseries' upcoming installment. However, an interview slip by one of the show’s writers indicates that the speculation about a carnival theme may have been accurate.
American Horror Story: Carnival?
Douglas Petrie, who works as both a writer and co-executive producer on American Horror Story, spilled the carnival news during a podcast with Nerdist Writers Panel. Initially, when asked about the setting, Petrie said, “I can say nothing.” Castle and Arrow writer Moira Kirkland, who was also on the podcast, chimed in, “Well, I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard carnival.”
“Yes — that was the…,” said Petrie. “It… It doesn’t have a title.”
The Nerdist podcast moderator Ben Blacker stepped in to verify, asking Petrie, “But that’s the setting?...

I never know how early to arrive to line up for an Aff panel; I tend to err on the side of caution and was downtown an hour before the first panels I wanted to attend. Before "A Conversation with Callie Khouri" began on Sunday morning, I actually saw her in the bathroom. Yes, I stopped myself from asking when Avery and Juliette will finally hook up on Nashville (but inquiring minds want to know!) -- and didn't even ask her about it during the panel itself.
Ben Blacker (creator of the Nerdist Writers Panel podcast) led the interview with Khouri, who told us about her childhood in Kentucky (after her birth in San Antonio). She read a lot for stimulation, but as for writing, "I never thought it was something I could do."
Khouri wrote Thelma and Louise in six months after living and working in L.A. for a time.

In addition to screening The Wolf Man, Beyond Fest also screened a 35 mm print of another of Universal’s classics, The Mummy. Despite perhaps being its most profitable overall, thanks to the Hammer sequels and the Brendan Fraser franchise that followed it in the 90′s/00′s, The Mummy might be one of the more overlooked tenets of horror, as Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Creature normally supersede it in discussions of everyone’s favorites.
I tend to agree with that sentiment, as the cheesy love-at-first-kidnapping romance between David Whemple and Helen Grosvener (Zita Johann) is more than a little distracting. But the opening scenes, with Bramwell Fletcher’s Ralph Norton going crazy at the sight of the Mummy reborn… is Almost as manic and crazy as Colin Clive’s “It’s Alive!” moment in Frankenstein. The film is still as wonderful and inspiring as the first time you watched it,...

I started off my Saturday at the festival by sitting in on the "Veronica Mars: From Small Screen To Silver Screen" panel at the Driskill Hotel Ballroom. Ben Blacker (from the Nerdist Writers Panel) moderated this excellent conversation with Veronica Mars creator and Austin resident Rob Thomas and actor Chris Lowell ("Piz"). Over the course of 75+ minutes, Thomas spoke about the benefits and difficulties of crowdfunding the upcoming Veronica Mars feature film through Kickstarter, developing the screenplay, shooting the film itself and his post-production process (which has been going on for the past 11 weeks).
Over 90,000 people contributed to the Kickstarter campaign, which is the third highest-funded project in the site's history. While $5.7 million can create a decent indie film, this is a franchise that is controlled by Warner Bros., which means that the resources to make a full-length movie were still somewhat limited. In the end, Thomas calls it a...

Halloween is nigh, and that means horror movies aplenty, not that we need any more of an excuse to dust off the classics of our favorite genre. But Beyond Fest, an event taking place in La throughout this October, is making that experience interactive, bringing together some of the finest filmmakers, the best movies, and even infusing screenings with live music from the likes of Umberto, Goblin, and Alan Howarth.
Perhaps the day I was most looking forward to was this past Saturday’s “Full Moon” double feature, serving up perhaps the two best werewolf movies of all-time, right after one another. Kicking off the evening is 1981′s The Howling, followed by the movie that it (and every werewolf movie) is indebted to: Universal’s The Wolf Man, with Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, and Bela Lugosi. The Thrilling Adventure Hour
Written by Ben Acker & Ben Blacker

Published by Archaia Entertainment
The Thrilling Adventure Hour is a graphic novel anthology created by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, the guys responsible for the wildly funny and popular monthly stage show that shares a name, among other things, with this graphic novel. Equal parts Prairie Home Companion, Buck Rogers, and something all their own, this graphic novel is for anyone who loves well-done illustrations paired with every kid’s (or big kid’s) dream adventure.
Just as the stage production pays homage to all the riveting radio shows that were prevalent in the days before television, this anthology is a collection of stories paying tribute to a time when genre specific stories were the bee’s knees. Each included story is a rendition of the segments, settings, and characters from the stage...

There is the cacophony coming through the velvet curtain from the stage at Largo at the Coronet, a charmingly old-school 280-seat theater in West Hollywood, as the four-piece Andy Paley Orchestra rehearses. There are guest stars -- such as Parenthood’s Jason Ritter, Southland’s Ben McKenzie and Key & Peele’s Keegan Michael Key -- rereading their lines with the desperate studiousness of medical students on cadaver day. Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. On Saturday, Jan. 21, lucky attendees of Sf Sketchfest got to witness an event a decade in the making: A staged recreation of the cult classic "Wet Hot American Summer" by (most of) the original cast at the Marines’ Memorial Theatre in San Francisco, CA.
The 2001 summer camp movie parody, made primarily by members of comedy troupe The State on a shoestring budget, was a box office failure upon its theatrical release. But the following decade has been kind to "Wet Hot." Today, the movie has become a sort of comedy calling card, and telling someone that you're a fan of "Wet Hot American Summer" immediately sends a message about your sense of humor: Straight faced and silly simultaneously, hyper self-aware and more than a little ironic.

Quite honestly, the "Supernatural" episode, “The Mentalists” should have been the episode leading up to Halloween weekend than “Slash Fiction.” This little ghostly tale has everything that is appropriate for the season—poltergeists, angry spirits, and fiery deaths—to make All Hallow’s Eve just a little bit spookier.
When the Winchester’s relationship is put into question, whatever lasting animosity exists does get patched up as the two work together to solve a series of strange deaths going on in the town of Lily Dale. This location is the hometown of the Fox sisters, who began the Spiritualist Movement. The bureaucracy in this sleepy side township decided to make an industry out of this fact.

Supernatural Review, Season 7, Episode 7: “The Mentalists”
Written by Ben Acker & Ben Blacker
Directed by Mike Rohl
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on Supernatural: The Universe just won’t let Sam and Dean quit each other, Ellen makes her voice heard, and pretenders shouldn’t play with Ouija boards.
Supernatural has been on a bit of a run, smartly balancing horror and comedy, and that trend continues this week. However, “The Mentalists” succeeds where most of the other episodes this season have failed, with its emotion and look at the Sam and Dean relationship. It also manages to succeed despite the absence of Bobby; Jim Beaver has long been one of the strongest assets to the series, and it’s easy for episodes without him to feel somehow lacking. It’s not a particularly standout episode, but it’s one that feels increasingly solid upon further reflection.

Dean heads to Lily Dale, NY after he hears a news report about two psychics getting killed. When he pulls in to town, he discovers it is a town full of psychics. Dean finds Sam already in town, in his...
